Colorful Statement Earrings Rock 73rd Golden Globes By Deborah Yonick, jewelry style expert Fashion fans tracking the latest style trends for 2016 at the 73rd Annual Golden Globes saw lots of lace, ruffles and sequins; bare shoulders, plunging necklines and open backs; white and jewel-toned gowns; and statement-making colored gemstone earrings. Hailed by the Hollywood Reporter as the standout trend of the night, bold gemmy earrings big drops, studs, clusters or cascading chandeliers were among the most memorable looks on the red carpet, with emeralds especially popular. Empire star and Globe winner, Taraji P. Henson, adorned in shoulder-dusting emerald drop earrings by Kimberly McDonald for AGTA Member, Gemfields, 107 carats of Zambian emeralds suspended from diamonds for the perfect pop of color against her strapless white Stella McCartney gown. Also donned in white, Laverne Cox of Orange is the New Black fame framed her face in vivid Colombian emerald and diamond chandelier earrings by Lorraine Schwartz (bracelet and ring, too).
Tone on tone, Blindspot star Jamie Alexander matched her emerald and black Genny dress beautifully with Colombian emerald earrings and ring in blackened metal by Lorraine Schwartz. Green with envy in Versace, actress Jada Pinkett Smith adorned with the perfect pearl and diamond emerald drop earrings by Van Cleef & Arpels. While Gina Rodriguez ( Jane the Virgin ) paired emerald and diamond fringe chandeliers by Neil Lane with her strapless sapphire colored Zac Posen for a vibrant blue-green blend with emerald ring and two sapphire and diamond bracelets a part of the mix. Ruby was also popular red carpet pick best worn in cluster-style earrings as spied on Lola Kirke ( Mozart in the Jungle ) in Chopard paired with flowing ochre-hued Monique Lhuillier, and Eva Longoria wearing Lorraine Schwartz with her white George Hobeika gown. And, pretty in pink tones, Heidi Klum adorned her feathery silver Marchesa frock in cascading Cherry Blossom earrings a la Lorraine Schwartz.
Pearls continue to string along an A-list fan base, particularly for drop earrings with diamonds as worn by Cate Blanchett ( Carol ) in retro AGTA Member, Tiffany, 1915 archives; Jane Fonda ( Youth ) in sleek Chopard design dangling 17mm white South Sea pearls; and Zendaya Coleman ( K.C. Undercover ) in Yoko London dripping Tahitian black pearls and black diamonds atop her rich burgundy Marchesa gown with plunging neckline. She also sported a dazzling garnet ring by Lydia Courteille. Hollywood s most stylish women were all ears at the Globes, dropping other vibrant gems in colorful statement earrings like fire opal on Bryce Dallas Howard ( Jurassic World ) by Irene Neuwirth; pink opal and peach moonstone earrings on Melissa Benoist, also by Irene Neuwirth, and with pink opal ring; Paraiba tourmaline and diamonds on Queen Latifah ( Bessie ) by Lorraine Schwartz; yellow sapphire on Amy Adams by Neil Lane (with a fabulous 30-carat fire opal ring); and amethyst pear drops with tanzanite and tsvaorite on Joanne Froggatt of Downton Abbey by Chopard (as well as a bold 21-carat amethyst ring).
There were several sensational statement necklaces grabbing the spotlight too, with those set in warm color most talked about, as seen on Globe-winner Maura Tierney for The Affair in citrine and gold torque necklace by Fred Leighton, circa 1980s; presenter Olivia Wilde in intaglio carnelian gold collar by Bulgari, circa 1975, (and knockout cushion cabochon rubellite ring); and Leslie Mann wearing a mixed gemstone necklace in ethereal to earthy tones by Irene Neuwirth that she draped down her back, with pink tourmaline pendant earrings. Colored gemstones continue to captivate women of style on and off the red carpet, with gems found in a range of hues most popular in statement-making designs like tourmaline, garnet, opal, topaz, and quartz. Softer pastel shades in fashion for spring will evoke greater interest in richer, saturated gems to contrast. Imagine if Katy Perry had adorned her Rose Quartz colored gown, Pantone s Color of the Year, in ruby or red spinel jewels instead of white diamonds at the Golden Globes. Total pop! Expect to see more statement pieces with gems like sapphire, tanzanite and Paraiba that create vibrant flashes of color on future red carpets.
