Why FLAME RESISTANT? 24 HIDDEN HAZARDS Firefighters understand the dangers of heat and flame better than anyone, and yet many of them are not as protected as they could and should be. Firefighter turnout gear is designed to protect the wearer against flames, sparks and embers. But what about the station wear underneath the turnout gear? Among the many perfect fuels for fire are 100 percent cotton and polycotton, and that s exactly what many firefighters are wearing on the job. The truth is that 100 percent cotton clothes become completely consumed by flames, and polycotton garments are worse they burn and then melt, greatly multiplying the devastating effects to human skin. COMPLETE PROTECTION Full turnout gear does cover station wear, but certain emergency situations may expose this clothing to heat and flame. When the unexpected happens, be prepared. Flame-resistant (FR) station wear, like turnout gear, does not ignite and continue to burn when exposed to flame. This increases the chance to escape danger unharmed or with minimal injuries. CHEST: Measurement should be taken around the fullest part of the chest with arms down, just under the arms and across the shoulder blades. SLEEVE: With elbow bent, measure from center of neck (back side) to elbow and over to wrist. WAIST: Measure around waist (not pulling tightly) at the height you prefer to wear the waistband. INSEAM: Take a pair of pants that fit you well and measure from the crotch to the bottom of the leg.
