COMPETITION SCOPE COMPETITION SCOPE 2015 Hairstyling TIME, LOCATION & COMPETITION INFORMATION Competition Date: Monday March 0, 2015 Location: St. David C.S.S. Time: 9:00am-2:0pm Room: 105 Competition Chair: Mr. Z. Economides zeno.economides@wcdsb.ca First, second and third place winners will be notified and are required to attend an award ceremony on April 8 th 2015 at Conestoga College Doon Campus (6-7pm). All gold medal winners will advance to the Ontario Technological Skills Competitions (OTSC) taking place at RIM Park in Waterloo on May 5 th 2015. Gold medal winners of the OTSC will advance to the Canadian Skills Competitions taking place from May 27-0 th 2015. PLEASE NOTE: It is recommended that students review their competition scope, times and locations of their competition on a continuous basis as ALL COMPETITION INFORMATION IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY TIME. PURPOSE OF COMPETITION To enable industry to view the level of skills taught within the Secondary institutions. This will encourage community involvement and input from industry professionals ensuring that today's market demands are met within school curriculum. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO BE TESTED (PRACTICAL, THEORY, JOB INTERVIEW) The students will be able to demonstrate their technical skills and creative ability in the following three testing areas: 1. Men's Classic Cut (Bombage) and Style without Beard Design 2. Women's Trendy Salon Cut and Style. Elegant Evening Long Hair Style 4. Job Interview Test #1: Men s Classic Cut (Bombage) and Style (SEE PICTURES AT BOTTOM OF SCOPE!) *Note: beard trimming will not be judged at this competition to allow versatility in mannequin choice!! The hair lengths may be short or longer. NO AVANT GARDE or extensions. WET HAIR: Hair must be thoroughly wet and combed straight back before competition begins. HAIR LENGTH: must be cut a minimum of.5 inch (1.25 cm.) around the entire head including above or over ears. TOOLS AND PRODUCTS: Any cutting or styling tools may be used (including electrical) as well as sprays and styling aids. CLOTHING: Trendy-NOT theatrical or military! TIME: Provincial Competition 2 hours and 0 minutes REGIONAL COMPETITION 1 hour and 15 minute Test# 2:Women s Trendy Salon Cut and Style A trendy WEARABLE cut and style is required using a combination of lengths from long to short and which the models features become. No other pieces or extensions allowed! WET HAIR: Hair must be thoroughly wet and combed straight back before competition begins. HAIR LENGTH: One inch (2.5 cm.) must be cut throughout the head. Any hair length which is fashionable and suits the model may be applied. HAIR COLOUR: Colour at this stage of Competition is OPTIONAL and will NOT be considered in final evaluation of style. If used however, no neon colour is permitted! TOOLS AND PRODUCTS: Any haircutting tools or styling aids may be used including flat irons, curling irons and sprays. CLOTHING: Must be appropriate and apply to day fashion. REGIONAL COMPETITION: 1 hour and 15 minute Test # : Elegant Evening Long Hair A fashionable evening hairstyle is to be done using the mannequins own hair! REPORT TO THE FLOOR: Mannequin must have clean dry hair with NO pre-setting of any kind. Page 2 of 7

HAIR LENGTH: Minimum: no shorter than bottom of shoulder blade in back. Front may have a light fringe no further back than 1 inch into the hairline. Top of the head may have lengths no shorter than the jaw. TOOLS AND PRODUCTS: Any electrical tools, styling products and sprays may be used during the comb out. HAIR PIECES: NOT ALLOWED. Small ornamentations only, may be used if desired. HAIR COLOUR: Colour at this stage of Competition is OPTIONAL and will NOT be considered in final evaluation of style. If used however, neon colour is NOT permitted! REGIONAL COMPETITION - 1 hour and 15 minute Supplied by Competition Committee: *One non-hydraulic chair *One double electrical outlet per contestant *Table top space EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS Supplied by Student *Professional, clean and comfortable work attire as worn in today's salons. *All tools and supplies necessary for completion of all services outlined in the scope. *One mannequin for Male Bombage Cut *One mannequin for the Women's Trendy Salon Cut and Style *One long haired mannequin for the Elegant Evening Long Hair *Ornamentation (optional) *Mannequin drapings (optional) *One table top mirror NOTE: All hand held blow dryers cannot exceed 1800 watts All curling irons cannot exceed 125 volts, 60hz, 75 amps *Contestants cannot borrow supplies from others. It is the responsibility of each competitor to supply the tools and supplies. Failure to supply the required tools and supplies may result in competitor not being allowed to participate. SAFETY Safety is a priority at all Technological Skills Competition. At the discretion of the judges and technical chairs a competitor can be removed from the competition site for not having the proper safety equipment and/or not acting in a safe manner. 1. It is mandatory for all competitors to wear CSA approved eyewear (including side shields for prescription eyewear).* Page of 7

2. It is mandatory for all competitors to wear CSA approved footwear.*. Jewellery such as rings, bracelets and necklaces or any items deemed unsafe by competition judges shall be removed.* 4. Appropriate dust masks (organic is preferable) are to be worn.* 5. Proper shop attire is to be worn (no loose straps, baggy sleeves). Any attire that is deemed unsafe by competition judges will not be permitted.* *Competition judges will have final authority on matters of safety. JUDGING CRITERIA Judging will be done according to the "0 Point International System" The top three contestants will rank into the following categories: Gold Medal..First Place Standing Silver Medal..Second Place Standing Bronze Medal..Third Place Standing Demerits may be given for any rule infractions. **Any communication between audience and competitors during contest time may be seen as coaching and could cause demerits to be awarded. Penalties: Length..one point Colour (during competition)..one point Use of tools..one point Out of Category..one point Coaching..first warning will incur 1-5 points Second warning..disqualification **Contestants will also lose points at the discretion of the judges if they or their coaches engage in conversation with the judges while the competition is running. * As the rules state, there are no ties. If the score is even after the contest, the time competitors took to complete the project will be used as the tie breaker. Page 4 of 7

JOB INTERVIEW To assist competitors in preparing for their job searches and to become valued employees, there is a job interview incorporated into each competition. On the day of their competition students are required to: 1) Bring a current resume 2) Be prepared to answer interview questions Performance in the interview accounts for 5% of the team s overall mark. Sample interview questions are available at www.skillsontario.com/hr. PLEASE NOTE: there are no facilities for printing on-site at the competition. 15 MINUTE FOLLOW UP Some contests may include a 15 minute follow up session after the competition. This allows judges to provide feedback to students as a group CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS Professional, clean and comfortable work attire as worn in today's salons. Competitors are to be dressed in a clean and appropriate manner. Competitors must follow all safety regulations related to clothing requirements. MEALS & BREAKS Each participant is required to bring a bagged lunch as they will not be allowed to purchase lunch during the competition. Any food brought to the venue must be nut free. Any nut products found on site will be removed. If a competitor requires a break to use the washroom or have a snack during their competition, they are required to approach the co-chair of the competition to request a short break. Participants will get 0 minutes for lunch. It is recommended that competitors eat a good breakfast on the day of the competitions. COMPETITORS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO SPEAK TO EACH OTHER DURING LUNCH or WASHROOM BREAKS. Failure to comply could cause immediate removal from the competition. PROJECTS: All projects are property of the Waterloo Catholic Skills Competition Committee. Page 6 of 7

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BOMBAGE: NOTE: Use of personal devices (ipods, mp players, cell phones) are not permitted for use during the competition. Competitors may be disqualified for use of these devices.
