STROKE STROKE MUNICH 2017 October 4-8
Marco Schwalbe (1976) Owner and CEO STROKE Director of INTOXICATED DEMONS Gallery This is what i treat myself to STROKE 2017 With my gallery INTOXICATED DEMONS i always wanted to find a place where the strong vitality and the unique spirit of the emerging contemporary art movement is combined with all art market aspects that professionals need. I couldn t find it - therefore i had to invent it by myself. (Marco Schwalbe)

THE STROKE VENUE NEW AND OFF After 4 years of having STROKE in a beautiful and beloved historic site, we felt that it s time to move on. We wanted to explore new urban spaces and also pay homage to the places of where it all began. The new STROKE site is an extraordinary place that is situated just a couple of minutes away from the heart of Munich. It s combining both the beauty of urban decay and the spirit of a vibrant place that almost got forgotten in a gentrified surrounding.
THE STROKE VENUE IN MUNICH The former construction hall for motor-scooters has seen various owners and usages. For more than a decade a famous Munich flea market had it s base in the early 20th century architecture. Since 2012 it was unused due to several public restrictions. This year STROKE has the exclusive option to re-animate the urban decay charms.
THE STROKE VENUE IN MUNICH IN MUNICHS NEW NEIGHBORHOOD The Werksviertel is located right by München Ostbahnhof (Munich East railway station) A new district for living, working, leisure and culture is being created in this 40-hectare former i ndustrial and commercial area. Around 1,200 new homes are planned for some 3,000 citizens, with long-term plans for up to 7,000 new jobs.

Q&A How can you offer prices below the average art fair costs? Since the beginning the STROKE business model was build on 4 columns (participation fee, visitors, gastronomy and sponsorships) instead of only 2 columns like classic art fairs do (75% participation fee, 25% visitors). Is it correct, that you also save money with your equipment? Yes - that s true. More equipment automatically results in higher production costs. Our walls are only medium size (height: 2.35m) and our lights are energy saving LED lamps. But that doesn t affects sales. We never had buyers complaining about light quality, when they purchased art works in the last 7 years. Please also remind that this workflow secures a low impact on the environment. We don't trash our system after using it. It is constantly controlled and repaired. What about the rumor, that STROKE is a street art fair? When we began STROKE, the topic of street art was popular. For the typical media, everything that was related to Graffiti, Pop Art, Low Brow, Emerging Contemporary Art, Urban Art (and so many more) was now automatically Street Art. It worked as a differentiation metaphor versus the established art market. We stopped fighting against it. More then 20.000 visitors every year don t care about marks or brands. It s simply like that - they love the art and they love the atmosphere.
