Part 2: Reading Comprehension Passage A How to get fit My first piece of advice to people who want to start getting fit is: don't buy an exercise bike. Typically, people who buy them use them for a week or so and then forget about them. They are effective if they are used regularly but you need to be determined. Most people will find it much easier to go for a gentle jog around the park. As well as being easy to do, jogging is also relatively cheap compared to most other sports. You don't need to buy expensive clothes if you're just going running around the park or on the beach. The main thing is that they're comfortable, and that they keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. There is one piece of equipment, however, that you will have to spend time and money on, and that's your running shoes. Remember that you are not looking for a fashion item, but for something that will support your feet and protect you from injury. They can be expensive, but if they are good quality they will last you a long time. It's always best to get expert advice, and the best place for that is a sports shop. As for the actual jogging, the secret is to start gently, and not to do too much at the beginning especially if you haven't had any exercise for a long time. Try a mixture of walking and running for ten minutes about three times a week at first. Once you are happy doing that you can then start to increase the amount you do gradually. After a few months you should hope to be able to run at a reasonable speed for twenty minutes three or four times a week. It's important that you feel comfortable with whatever you do. If you do, you'll start to enjoy it and will probably keep doing it. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, you'll probably stop after a short time and return to your bad habits. In any case, training too hard is not very effective. Research has shown that somebody who exercises for twice as long or twice as hard as another person doesn't automatically become twice as fit. (41) Most people don't use exercise bikes for very long. (42) Exercise bikes don't get you fit. (43) You should keep warm at all times when you are jogging. (44) It is best to go jogging in a park or on the beach. (45) Running shoes don't have to be fashionable. (46) Expensive running shoes are better than cheaper ones. 4

(47) You should jog three days a week and walk on the other days (48) You should start jogging by walking for ten minutes. (49) You should expect to feel uncomfortable when jogging. a) True b) False c) The text does not say (50) You won't necessarily be a lot fitter by running twice as fast. (51) In the context of paragraph 1 which is the best Italian translation for gentle? a. efficace b. facile c. gentile d. moderato (52) In the context of paragraph 2, which of these options is NOT a synonym for cheap? a. cost-effective b. economical c. inexpensive d. overpriced (53) In the context of paragraph 3, which is the best synonym for item? a. apparatus b. article c. sort d. style (54) In paragraph 4, the pronoun that refers to a. a mixture of walking and running b. exercise for a long time c. happy d. three times a week (55) In paragraph 5, who or what is the subject of the verb become? a. another person b. research c. somebody d. training 30 5

[B] Calvin Klein (i) Read the text and indicate where each heading (A H) should be inserted. There is one extra heading A B C D E F G H A good business partner Boxing clever Eye for business Hero or villain? His big break Into the red Smell of success Why he s famous (56) He s the man whose name has turned into one of the world s most recognisable brands along with Coke, Pepsi, Kodak and Nike. A great fashion designer, a genius at marketing and a style pioneer Klein was the first to launch affordable designer jeans, make underwear for men fashionable and create the world's first unisex fragrance range, CK One. (57) In 1968, Klein and his childhood friend, Barry Schwartz, launched a line of men s and women s coats. The combination of Klein s design talents and Schwartz s business acumen soon attracted the attention of the fashion world. By the 70s the line had expanded to include women s clothing and a whole ready-to-wear line. (58) With a line of classic, sharp designs in neutral tones, Klein revolutionised the industry with his minimalist style. In the late 70s Klein really began to make a name for himself globally when he introduced designer jeans at an affordable price. In one of the world s most famous ad campaigns, teenage model and actress Brooke Shields made it known that: nothing stood in the way of her and her Calvins. (59) Building on the fame his jeans had given his name, Klein introduced Calvin Klein underwear in 1982. For the first time ever men s underwear was perceived as a fashion item no longer just a practical product. Calvin Klein made boxer shorts into a sexy style statement with men wearing their boxers high and trousers low to show off the Klein brand name round their waist. Another controversial ad campaign featuring Mark Wahlberg helped make the line a global success. (60) Around the same time Klein launched scents such as Obsession and Eternity. Ever the revolutionary, he was also the first to release a line of unisex fragrances CK One. Again Klein used a series of stylish and sexy ad campaigns to make his fragrances a phenomenal success. (61) The success of the designer s brand can be linked to two strengths: his undeniable fashion talent but also his ability to promote and position his brand superbly. Klein is undeniably a fashion visionary but he is also recognised as a marketing genius who has changed the face of advertising by continuously pushing back the barriers. (62) Klein was recently voted one of Time magazine s 25 Most Influential People. When his only daughter Kelly was kidnapped and he agreed to hand over the money at great risk to his own safety, he received the admiration of many. However, some people said that she had not really been kidnapped and that Klein just wanted the publicity. 6

Part 3: Translation [A] Translate ONE of these texts into Italian. [1] Steig Larsson, born in 1954, was a journalist. He was the editor-in-chief of the magazine Expo from 1999, and had previously worked at a major news agency for many years. He died suddenly and unexpectedly in November 2004, soon after delivering the manuscripts for three crime novels to his Swedish publisher. These novels make up the Millennium Trilogy, and have gone on to sell many millions of copies worldwide. Tragically, Larsson did not live to see the phenomenon that his work has become. [B] Translate this text into Italian. Why is it important to be happy? Well, of course, it makes you feel better. However happiness does not just make your enjoy life more - it actually affects how successful you are in both your personal and professional life. A few years ago, a team of researchers from the University of California decided to review studies which investigated happiness. These studies had used a range of different procedures to make people feel happy, including eating chocolate cake, watching funny films, reading positive affirmations (e.g. I am a good person ), and smelling fresh flowers. Independently of the methods used, all the research showed that happiness not only comes from success, but also causes it. 25 ----------END OF EXAM---------- 9
