UBT196M Manicure treatments Unit reference number: K/615/0648 Level: 2 Guided Learning (GL) hours: 40 Overview This unit will enable learners to provide manicure services to clients, treating the required areas of the hand and lower arm. Learners will develop the knowledge and skills to prepare for and provide a professional manicure treatment. Learners will also develop their understanding of possible contra-indications, along with indications for, and benefits and effects of, professional manicure treatments. Whilst treatment portfolios will not be graded, they may be sampled by the VTCT External Quality Assurer (EQA). Evidence from the graded practical assessment must also be presented in the treatment portfolio. 3
2. Graded practical assessment Learners must carry out a complete manicure treatment which will be observed, marked and graded by centre assessors. The grade achieved in the graded practical assessment will be the grade awarded for the unit. The graded practical assessment must take place in a real or realistic working environment on a real client. At a minimum the graded practical assessment for this unit must cover: Treatment one manicure treatment including one specialised treatment. Polish application must be a dark polish Specialised hand treatment learners must choose from one of the following to complement the manicure: paraffin wax, thermal mitts, mask Resources appropriate selection of equipment to demonstrate the full range of treatment and to meet the treatment needs and outcomes Products as a minimum the candidate is expected to demonstrate the use of nail enamel remover, cuticle massage cream or oil, cuticle remover, an exfoliation product, massage mediums, base coat, nail enamel (frosted or pearl, top coat, quick dry products) Recorded professional discussion can also be used as an assessment method attached to the graded practical assessment and is particularly useful for gathering evidence for criteria related to evaluation and reflection. Professional discussions should be planned and recorded. 3. External examination Whilst the theory content of LO1and LO2 may be naturally assessed in the graded practical assessment, they will be tested by external examination towards the end of the period of learning. External examinations will test knowledge and understanding from across the whole vocational area (mandatory units). Learners should use the unit content section of this unit to aid revision since exam questions will test the full breadth of this section. External examinations will be set and marked by VTCT and will contribute to the overall qualification grade. 4. Graded synoptic assessment In the last term or final third of their qualification, learners will be required to undertake a graded synoptic assessment. This will require learners to carry out a range of treatments from across the whole vocational area (mandatory units). Assessment coverage will vary year on year, although all services will be covered over time. VTCT will set a brief for centres which will detail the treatments to be covered in the graded synoptic assessment. Grading descriptors for the synoptic assessment will also be provided by VTCT. The graded synoptic assessment will be marked and graded by centre staff and externally verified by VTCT. The graded synoptic assessment will contribute to the overall qualification grade. 4
Unit content LO1 Know the salon requirements for manicure treatments Learners must know how to set up the work area: Prepare the work area to allow for: - Ease of access and free movement around the couch/chair - Effective lighting - Hygienic set up of manicure chair, couch and trolley - Selection of products and equipment to meet the needs of the client Ensure a safe working environment: - Clean and hygienic work area - The use of a suitable sterilisation and sanitisation for equipment - Effective positioning of couch/chair trolley and stool to allow ergonomic and safe practice Learners must know how professional beauty therapists/nail technicians present themselves: Clean professional uniforms create a positive impression of the beauty therapist/nail technician and the salon. Uniforms should be made from a comfortable fabric to facilitate the stretching involved in the treatment Beauty therapists/nail technicians should wear closed in footwear, no jewellery, no piercings, hair neatly tied back, and any fringe secured, nails well-manicured short and free of varnish Personal hygiene and cleanliness including showering, covering cuts and abrasions, wearing deodorant or antiperspirant, oral hygiene, including clean teeth, fresh breath, are all important elements of professional presentation Learners must know the salon requirements for record keeping: Accurate appointment systems, stationery, loyalty, rewards, acknowledgement of occasions How to establish and record clear information that is accurate and in logical order, how to refer to existing records - Skin sensitivity tests, adaptations and modifications, recommendations - Treatment planning and how to update records at the end of the treatment, update at each visit, maintained electronically, paper records Learners must know the importance, purpose and methods of patch tests: A patch test is designed to alert the therapist/technician to any pre-disposed skin sensitivity on the client s behalf. Any active, new or known ingredient that can potentially produce a reaction is usually patch tested 24-48 hours before treatment. All patch tests provided need to be noted and recorded, listing all products, where patch test took place on the body and, if appropriate, client signature and date Patch testing for manicure would include all active or new products to be used within the treatment such as the massage medium and general products. Client records need to be updated with results. Conducted to ascertain suitability of products and sensitivity of the client Patch test application techniques: - Cleanse area (either crook of elbow or behind ear) - Apply product to the area with a brush - Allow to dry - Leave on for a minimum of 24 hours - Explain positive and negative reactions - Remove excess product - Complete record card with results, products used and where placed 5
Learners must know how to interpret results of the patch test: Positive red, itchy, irritated, swelling, sore Negative no change to skin Learners must know the correct procedure to take when a contra-action occurs: An allergic reaction to manicure products the client may experience redness, itching, swelling, rash, burning or stinging, blistering. Remove all products immediately with suitable remover, clean the area with cool water, apply a cool compress, record the information on their record card, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist. Recommend hypo-allergenic products Learners must know the insurance requirements for the delivery of manicure treatments: As a minimum a salon should hold where applicable, employers insurance as well as public liability insurance and professional indemnity Learners must know the legal requirements for providing treatments to minors: The age at which an individual is classed as a minor and how this differs nationally 6
LO2 Understand the effects and indications of manicure treatments Learners must know the contra-indications to manicure treatments: Example of contra-indications that may prevent treatment; skin and nail disorders, bacterial infections, fungal infections, viral infections, parasitic infections, severe skin conditions, severe bruising, diabetes, severe nail separation Examples of contra-indications that may restrict treatment; bacterial infections, minor eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, severe nail separation, blocked sweat glands, sunburn, loss of tactile sensation, cuts and abrasions, broken bones Learners must know skin and nail conditions and disorders: Skin conditions general skin condition, excessively dry skin, overgrown cuticle Nail conditions discoloured, mis-shapen, split, ridged, dry, dehydrated, brittle, pitted, beau s lines, blue nail, bruised nails, flaking nails, hang nails, koilonychia, lamella dystrophy, leuconychia, onychatrophia, onychauxis, onychia, onychocryptosis, onychogryphosis, onycholysis, onychomycosis (tinea ungium), onychophagy, onychoptosis, onychorrhexis, paronychia (whitlow), pterygium, sepsis transverse ridges, vertical ridges, weak nails Learners must know the benefits and effects of products for skin and nails used in manicure treatments: Warm towels, nail polish remover (including removal of gel polish), cuticle massage cream and oil, cuticle remover, exfoliation products, hand masks, paraffin wax, massage mediums, base coat, nail polish frosted and pearl, cream, light, dark, French polish, top coat, quick-dry products (use of products in compliance with manufacturer s instructions and any safety precautions) Learners must understand the factors that influence manicure treatments: Manicure treatments can only be performed if the client has no contra-indications. The therapist/technician will need to be aware of the protocols for referral to another healthcare professional, if it is in the best interest of the client. The condition of nails and skin will need to be factored in when advising clients of treatment outcomes Learners must understand the different nail shapes: Fan, hook, spoon, oval, square Learners must have knowledge of a wide variety of different equipment available for manicure and understand their uses: Hand bowls, manicure stations, paraffin wax heater, thermal mitts, disinfecting fluid, emery boards, hoof stick and tipped orange wood stick, cuticle knife, cuticle nippers, nail brush, nail scissors/nail clippers Learners must have knowledge of the restrictions to treatment outcomes with manicure: Client personal preferences such as choice of exfoliation, masks and specialised treatment. Preferred massage pressure would need to be considered, the presenting condition of lower arm, hand and nails, the clients availability, timescales to work to and financial commitment, may all be influencing factors on the restrictions to treatment Condition of nails, skin and cuticles may influence the finished result Learners must know the possible contra-actions that may occur during or after a manicure treatment: Extreme adverse skin reactions skin irritation, itching, erythema, oedema, blood spotting to cuticle, allergic reaction, burns 7
Learners must know how to effectively respond to contra-actions: Discontinue treatment, take remedial action. Record contra-action Learners must have knowledge of benefits and safety precautions of different applications: Filing one direction, side to centre Cuticle knife or scraper applied flat to a wet nail plate and used with gentle circular movements to lift cuticle adhering to the nail plate Cuticle nippers applied point down to remove lifted excess cuticle Cuticle remover needs to be thoroughly removed due to its drying effect on cuticles Massage medium removed from nail plate prior to enamel Paraffin wax, masks, exfoliation, massage mediums, increase absorption of creams, increase circulation and lymph flow, nourishing, stimulating, soothing Learners must understand methods of application Learners must understand classification of massage techniques and their benefits and effects: Effleurage gentle stroking movements which introduce the hands to the area, helping relaxation and soothing nerve endings Petrissage kneading movements which increase the blood flow to muscular tissue and bones. These movements aid desquamation, increase removal of waste and stimulate tissues Tapotement hacking and cupping which stimulates the area and break down tension. This movements needs adaptation depending on the area being treated and tissue density Friction small circular movements which break down adhesions in muscles, loosen scar tissue and increase joint mobility Passive movements gentle manipulation of the joints with stretching and mobility movements. Joints are kept supple, adhesions are prevented and the elasticity of the muscles is maintained 8
LO3 Be able to prepare for manicure treatments Prepare and check the client, work area, equipment and products prior to the manicure treatment: Prepare treatment area according to salon requirements ensure a trolley and stool or manicure chair is available to use. LO4 Be able to provide manicure treatments Prepare the client s skin for treatment: Remove or protect clothing as appropriate Position the client with good support for the client s hand Explain each stage of the treatment The area should be cleansed using suitable products and techniques Select the required equipment and products to achieve the required results: Selection of equipment and manicure products to suit client s skin type and treatment objectives Selection of equipment and techniques in accordance with manufacturers instructions exfoliating products, warm towels and chosen specialised treatment, paraffin wax, thermal mitts and masks to be applied at appropriate stage of treatment according to manufacturers instructions Carry out manicure treatment techniques: Sanitise client s hands, checking for contra-indications Remove nail enamel Confirm the desired nail length and shape with the client. Starting with the thumb on the client s left hand, shape nails side to centre, ensuring free edge is smooth by beveling. Emery board used at a 45 angle to the nail, strokes in one direction only and straight across. Rough side to be used for reducing length, fine side for minor filing. Complete filing on both hands Working from the left hand only, apply buffing paste paste removed from jar with spatula, applied with tipped orangewood stick, buff from cuticle to free edge. Do not over buff (buffing is completed at this stage for the purpose of boosting circulation only if for shine purposes, leave until later stages of manicure process) Still working on the left hand, apply cuticle cream. Massage into the cuticles with small circular movements Place hand into the manicure bowl filled with warm soapy water Repeat on other hand, drying the client s hands as appropriate Carry out cuticle work using appropriate tools and techniques ensuring nail plate and surrounding skin is not damaged. Use cuticle knife on each nail to lift away any excess dead cuticle, ensure nail plate is wet when using cuticle knife and knife is held flat and not scratching the nail plate. Nippers should be used to remove only dead cuticle and cuticle should not be pulled. Wipe away onto tissue and wipe nail to remove excess cuticle remover Remove right hand from water, dry and repeat stages above Massage of hand and lower arm using oils or creams and all massage movements listed. Correct support to be provided throughout massage routine. Ensure client s sleeves are protected from the massage medium Excess massage medium to be removed using warm towels if requested by client Correct preparation of nails for painting, ensuring nails are clean and free from any product Apply base coat, nail enamel and top coat to both hands whilst holding the enamel bottle in the non-working, supporting hand. Ensure even application texture, no trace of nail polish on nail wall or cuticle Apply quick-drying product to complete treatment Record outcome to treatment including colour and products used 10
Prevent excess waste of treatment time and consumables by preparing effectively and working efficiently Reassure the client and communicate your positioning instructions clearly during the service Complete the treatment by advising client of suitable hand care and aftercare products Provide after-care advice: Avoid exposure to UV or heat stimuli. The skin will have been exfoliated and possibly received a heat treatment and will already be retaining heat in the areas treated The use of SPF s is recommended to combat the possible susceptibility to sun sensitivity Allow nails time to dry, give initial and complete drying times Advice and guidance provided on suitable hand care regime and homecare treatments to suit clients skin type and conditions Advice on further treatments and retail products to continue the beneficial effects of treatment Update and maintain the client treatment records: Record the outcomes of the treatment, ensuring records are up to date with the treatment carried out, any reactions to the treatment, aftercare given and feedback from the client Prepare the area for the next treatment: Disposal of all waste, sterilise all metal tools, sanitise work surfaces and non-metal items. Remove and safely store equipment and products as per manufacturers instructions. Ensure the treatment area is left clean and prepared for the next treatment 11
Skin cancer awareness Please note this information will not be assessed for the achievement of this unit. Public awareness of skin cancer has never been higher, and yet skin cancer remains the fastest growing cancer in the UK, especially amongst young people. The chances of a positive outcome can be dramatically increased with early identification and diagnosis. Professionals in hair, beauty, sports massage and health and wellbeing industries work closely with clients and in many cases have sight of areas of skin which may not be easily visible to the client. An informed awareness of the signs, symptoms and changes of appearance to be aware of when checking for early signs of cancer is a crucial tool for the conscientious practitioner in order to provide the most thorough service and in some cases, possibly lifesaving information signposting. Signs to look for when checking moles include utilising the ABCDE guide: A - Asymmetry the two halves of the area/mole may differ in their shape and not match. B - Border the edges of the mole area may be irregular or blurred and sometimes show notches or look ragged. C - Colour this may be uneven and patchy. Different shades of black, brown and pink may be seen. D - Diameter most but not all melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. If any mole gets bigger or changes see your doctor. E - Elevation/evolving elevation means the mole is raised above the surface and has an uneven surface. Looks different from the rest or changing in size, shape or colour. Anyone can get a suspicious mole or patch of skin checked out for free by the NHS by visiting their doctor, who may then refer to a dermatologist (an expert in diagnosing skin cancer). Assessment guidance Assessors must use the amplified assessment guidance in this section to judge whether assessment criteria have been achieved in the graded practical assessment. P1 Prepare and check the client, work area, equipment and products prior to the manicure treatment Learners must demonstrate that they have set up the treatment area in line with treatment and health and safety requirements. All the required products for the treatment are to hand and are fully stocked in advance. P2 Agree the treatment and check for contra-indications or restrictions to treatment Learners must demonstrate that they have consulted with the client using appropriate questioning techniques, as well as conducting visual and manual checks for contraindications. Learners must explain the treatment in full to the client and ascertain the client s treatment expectations. Learners must correctly identify the client s skin and nail condition and any treatment limiting conditions during the consultation and recommend the most appropriate manicure treatment. Any treatment preferences should also be discussed and agreed with the client. P3 Explain the treatment procedure to the client Learners must explain the treatment step by step to the client. At a minimum the explanation should include the treatment procedure for manicure, the benefits of the chosen products used and what effects should be expected after the treatment. P4 Instruct the client to prepare for the treatment Learners must demonstrate that they have provided their client with instructions on how to prepare for the manicure treatment. Learners must demonstrate that they instructed the client to what (if any) clothing or jewellery needs to be removed, with safe storage offered. The provision of modesty covering was arranged where required and advice and guidance was provided to the client on how to position themselves for safety and comfort and to facilitate the treatment. P5 Prepare client s skin for treatment Learners must demonstrate that they have sanitised their hands. Learners must remove all traces of dirt or grease from the client s hands and arms in the area to be treated. The skin should be wiped over with a skin disinfectant prior to treatment. Learners must demonstrate hygienic working practices when working on the client to prevent cross-infection. The client should be instructed on jewellery removal and the clothing surrounding the area being treated must be covered and protected. 14
P6 Select the required equipment and products to achieve the required results Learners must demonstrate that they have chosen the correct products for the client s skin and nail type and conditions. The learner will demonstrate the correct application method of the specialised manicure procedure in line with manufactures instruction. A minimum level of proficiency for selection of the most appropriate products could be demonstrated by choosing the correct type of exfoliation, mask, deciding which specialised treatment to apply to the client to most suit the skin and nail condition being treated and the presenting factors established through consultation. P7 Carry out manicure treatment techniques Learners must demonstrate that they have correctly supported the area being treated. Learners must demonstrate that the manicure treatment selected is the correct choice for the client and their skin and nail type. Filing of the nails must be at the correct angle and in one direction, cuticle work must be proficient and not scratch the nail plate, cuticle nippers should not pull the cuticle. Massage should be smooth and rhythmical and show adaptations in pressure where necessary. Learners must demonstrate neat application and removal of chosen products using warm towels when required. Learners must carry out the exfoliation and chosen specialised treatment (mask, paraffin wax, thermal mitts) at the appropriate stage of treatment according to manufacturer s instruction. Learners must demonstrate correct preparation of the nail for polish application. Polish application is smooth, even texture, and no trace of nail polish on nail wall or cuticle. P8 Provide aftercare advice Learners must demonstrate that they have provided the client with a minimum of the following advice; information on further specialised hand treatment option; avoid touching the nails for 2-3 hours; lifestyle activities that may need to be considered to prolong the life of the nail enamel; advice on retail products to continue the beneficial effects of treatment; advice on how to deal with contra-actions. P9 Update and maintain the client treatment records client treatment records Learners must demonstrate that they have updated and recorded the client records in line with salon requirements to cover a minimum of the following information: aftercare advice, products used, treatment performed, and the client s skin reaction to treatment and future recommendations for treatments. P10 Prepare the area for the next treatment Learners must demonstrate that they have prepared the treatment area, by wiping down couch and trolley. Removal and storage of products and none used consumables. Removal for laundering of used towels. Throwing away couch roll or used consumables. Refreshing the consumables used and ensuring ease of set up for next therapist/technician. 15
M1 Adjust communication techniques to meet the client s needs Learners must demonstrate that they have adjusted their style of communication to suit and respond to the client. Learners must demonstrate that all communication with the client is ethical, respectful, unobtrusive and inoffensive and of a suitable and appropriate content and context. Learners must give clients the opportunity to digest any technical information and encourage clients to ask questions. Learners must be confident in asking probing questions in a sensitive manner. Learners must show that they can assure and reassure the client throughout the consultation. Learners must demonstrate the consideration of the individual needs of the client. M2 Use techniques to promote the retail of products or additional services Learners must demonstrate that they have at a minimum recommended one relevant product or additional service to suit the client s needs to acknowledge a buying signal visual or verbal. Advice on appropriate nail, cuticle or hand cream, along with additional home care techniques should be provided to ensure the clients treatment experience continues to provide optimum results. Advice should be offered on alterations to personal habits or lifestyle choices, which will further benefit the client s hands and nails. The advice should include the features and benefits of using the specific products recommended. Learners should recommend further follow-on, alternative or additional beauty treatments and offer to re-book the client for their next appointment. M3 Ensure client comfort throughout the manicure Learners must demonstrate that they have checked with the client at regular intervals throughout the service to ensure client s comfort. Learners should demonstrate that they have taken action to protect the client s skin and clothing during the service such as the use of arm cuffs or tissues to protect the client s sleeves. Learners should also demonstrate that they have responded to the client s comfort needs throughout the service, for example checking comfort levels in regard to temperature, positioning, need for refreshments, etc. D1 Explain the selection of methods and techniques used during the manicure Learners must be able to explain the methods and techniques used in the nail service. UBT215M Anatomy and physiology for nail technologists or UBT202M Anatomy and physiology for beauty therapists The anatomy and physiology unit will provide knowledge of the structure and function of the nails and surrounding structures, as well as the relevant diseases and disorders the therapist is likely to encounter, in the areas under treatment. The anatomy and physiology unit most significantly underpins the knowledge and practical skills gained in the practical nail units.
