List of Works Claudie Gagnon Time of Ice From February 1 to April 26, 2009 The Secret, 1995 Mural installation Wood, acrylic, fabric, printed paper, cardboard on foamboard, plaster, sand, steel wire, china cup and ball of wool In 1995 Claudie Gagnon was artist in residence for six months at the Studio Cormier in Montreal. She filled the space with Where Does the Wind Go When it s not Blowing?, her first performative work that revives the art of the living tableau. While there, she also presented Flowers, Sorrows and Small Noises, an in situ installation in which The Secret was displayed, as a variant incorporated into a group of objects against a background of scarlet walls. Pass Me the Sky, 1998 Video, 4 min. 31 sec. Co-production with La Bande Video For the Snow on Snow show (1998), the artists centre La Bande Video of Quebec City invited Claudie Gagnon to make her first video, entitled Pass Me the Sky. The inaugural screening was held on a screen of snow outdoors in Saint Matthew s cemetery in Quebec City. It is the artist s only film. Both the imagery and the narration provide a good overview of her performative art.
Cabinets of curiosities, 2000, partially reconstructed in 2007 Sculptural installation Wood, Plexiglas, glass, dust, fabric, metal, lighting, various objects and materials To mark the year 2000, the artist Robert Lepage designed Métissages/Crossings (2000-2001), an exhibition at the Musée de la civilisation in Quebec City that focused on notions of identity and mixed blood, and invited Claudie Gagnon to participate. She created eight Cabinets of Curiosities, four of which have been revived for this retrospective. They evoke the Surrealist movement, the passing of time, and partnerships, through the use of dust, metal, glass and fabric. Parade, 2001 Glass dishes, various objects and materials This work, which can be variously arranged, was inspired by Charles Perrault s fairy story Hop o My Thumb, in which a little boy drops white pebbles one by one along his path in order to find his way back home. In Claudie Gagnon s installation, the trail left through the ground-floor and first-floor galleries is made of little imitation cakes. Chandelier, 2008-2009 Glass objects, nylon thread and lighting Chandelier is undoubtedly the best known of Claudie Gagnon s works. Since 1995 a number of versions of it have been exhibited in Quebec, across Canada and abroad. The format and colours vary, but all the versions are made of glass found by the artist in flea markets. Untitled, from Pumpkins and Glass Beads, 2004, reconstructed in 2007 sculpture originally presented in the in situ installation Pumpkins and Glass Beads Glass objects, water, crystals, mirror, fabric, tables, lighting In 2004, Pumpkins and Glass Beads was presented at the home of the artist, who lives in the country. The work forms a circuit starting in a barn with this table, the legs of which are sunk in the ground. The glass items on the table are therefore only precariously balanced. At the opening of the presentation, a piece of theatre was performed. On either side of the table two actors wearing black bonnets and red robes ate strings of liquorice with forks. They can be seen in the documentary video of the artist s performative works screened in the next gallery.
Buffet, 2006-2007 Sculpture installation Various objects and materials The initial effect of a magnificent reception hall fades the closer we get to the Buffet, and become aware of its smell, a mixture of medical odours and food smells. One of the pendants is made of paper napkins soiled by the guests the artist had invited on the occasion of another project. This was The Illustrious and Grotesque Wednesday Society (2006), which marked her twenty years of artistic practice.
