SCAN-Southern Colorado Art News September 2017 Spotlight on Ceramics/Pottery In case you ever thought pottery and ceramics was only about cups and bowls... Prepare to be amazed by the works of these two sculptural clay artists! Today I had the pleasure of spending a wonderful time interviewing and visiting with Trish Keck and Lora Nava at their studio (Oh My Studio!). This studio is packed with works in progress and completed works, ready for showing. It was wonderful to be immersed in the midst of all that is going on and to learn what lies at the heart of these beautiful creations. Currently, both artists are embracing the concept of "goddess", and each has a unique way of expressing the images this concept brings to mind. The stories behind the work, as well as naming them, brings them to life. A work in progress that Lora is preparing depicts a female form rising from the "shackles" of the man-made world. She rises with arms upraised and holds in her hands the ball of energy that frees her. This beautiful piece in progress is aptly titled: "Ascension of Psyche"
were experiencing a "heyday". We talked about how times have changed since then, with many an artist today finding themselves doing art while holding down other full or part-time jobs. Marketing, promoting, and selling art with the advent of social media and online markets is a trend many artists are following. Ascension of Psyche -WIP Lora embraces and teaches the sacredness of the clay (earth and water) that her creations evolve from. A natural-born teacher, Lora also helps others work from a heart-centered space while doing yoga and tai chi in and also in Walsenburg at the Sangre de Cristo Women's Outreach Clinic. She aspires to becoming an internationally known artist, learning about other cultures, meeting other artists, and traveling the world. Currently her works are being showcased at the Corazon Gallery in, Colorado. She has also shown, recently, at the Worrell Gallery in Santa Fe. Trish also serves as President and manages the Corazon Gallery which recently was awarded non-profit status. Her works are also showcased here, along with other members of the Gallery. New members and featured guest artists provide a dazzling array of art in many styles. Trish happily reminisced about her days of earning a livelihood from her art in the 80's, which was a time when art sales Shamans & Dragonfly Dancing by Trish Keck During this time, Trish is happy to be free to experiment and expand her repertoire of sculptural possibilities. It is refreshing to see these artists creating works from their innermost vision and love for what they do. These works are beautiful and collectable! Plans are underway to teach classes at the studio (TBA). You can view and experience their works at the Corazon Gallery, 149 E. Main St.,, CO
