Dear Attendee, Information for Students Attending the Palmer/Pletsch 4-Day Beginning Fashion Sewing: A Teacher Training Workshop in Portland, Oregon Here is information about the schedule, what to bring, the hotel, the optional shopping trip, color analysis, bra fitting, and a little information about the area. The workshop is held in this classroom at the Fabric Depot http://www.fabricdepot.com/ 700 SE 122nd Ave & Stark St, Portland, OR 97233 Local: 503-252-9530 Toll Free: 1-800-392-3376 E-Mail: info@fabricdepot.com Hours: Please visit www.fabricdepot.com for current hours of operation. Our ideal suggested schedule while you are here is to arrive the day before the workshop and get settled into the hotel. Remember, the hotel van will pick you up at the airport. You need to call when you get your luggage. When you make your reservations, don t forget to tell the hotel you are a Palmer/Pletsch student so you can get your special room rate. Call the hotel. DO NOT E-MAIL. Check our website for the most current hotel information: palmerpletsch.com/venue/portland-sewing-school/ Monarch Hotel 12566 S.E. 93rd Ave. Clackamas, OR 97015 800-492-8700 or 503/ 652-1515 Fax 503/ 652-7509 info@monarchhotel.cc www.monarchhotel.cc The hotel will be giving you a coupon each day worth 10% off meals in the lovely, reasonably-priced hotel restaurant and we will serve you lunch during the workshop (see the caterer's note on the next page), but when you arrive at the hotel, you might want to walk to a nearby store to stock your room refrigerator with a few snacks and drinks, and maybe a high-watt light bulb for sewing in your room. (Target is close-by.) Our local water is wonderful, FYI, so bottled water is just an option, but not very green. The hotel is near a major fashion shopping mall and you may want to check it out. Nordstrom is a very good place to be fitted for a bra if you ve never had that done before, especially if you are full-busted. Our students' favorite brand is Wacoal. If you would like to go to downtown Portland, the light rail now comes very close to the Monarch. Ask the front desk for information. One more note: Please do not wear perfume. We have found that some students have allergies to it. Thank you and see you soon!

A note from our caterer, Jodi Ladd: My name is Jodi Ladd and I have the privilege of preparing Palmer-Pletsch workshop lunches for you. It will be my task to provide tasty and nourishing meals to keep you focused and happy during your workshop. I like to use healthy ingredients such as quinoa, faro, beans and lentils, roasted vegetables, and fresh herbs in creative combinations. I like to marinate and grill. I favor ethnic flavors, so I m not afraid of spices. I try to use as many fresh, seasonal foods as I can, to highlight our unique northwest bounty. I am an omnivore and I believe in moderation. You can expect a week of well-balanced lunches that do not rely heavily on meat or dairy or sugar. You will see a lot of fresh salads with innovative additions. Everything will be made from scratch, but not necessarily from a recipe. (I like to improvise.) Having said that, I would like to be able to accommodate those of you who have serious food allergies. If a particular food causes a severe reaction, I want to hear about it. If you are celiac, I want to know. In order to streamline my efforts, however, I ask that you suspend any other food preferences or lifestyle choices for the duration of your workshop and trust that you will be well nourished by healthy lunches with plenty of options. Give me your name and class dates at least one week in advance. Feel free to contact me at: jodiladd57@gmail.com Thank you and happy sewing!! Jodi Ladd, Caterer

Also, go to Nordstrom s and Macy s and check out what is happening in ready-to-wear for adults and juniors. Try on new styles to give you sewing ideas. DAY 5: OPTIONAL day after the workshop shopping trip: See last page for more info.

Bring the Following to the Workshop: NOTE: The Fabric Depot has all supplies and a huge fabric selection and offers you a student discount. Basic hand and machine sewing supplies. Your machine if you wish. We do have machines available. If you are driving, we would appreciate you bringing your machine. If you want to sew at night in your room, bring your machine. Black and white thread (plus thread to match any fabric you bring.) Seam gauge, tape measure, 12" ruler, needles (hand and machine), fine glass head pins (1 3/8"), pin cushion or magnetic pin cushion, shears, snips, rotary cutter (optional we have mats), chalk pencil, one new unsharpened pencil with eraser tip, and a seam ripper. If you wish to bring fabric from your stash, the butcher apron takes 1 1/8 yd. cotton. You will also need 3/8 yd. contrast print or solid cotton for the trim. Fabric Depot has a HUGE quilt cotton section The kimono robe takes about 4 1/4-5 yds of 45" fabric plus 1 7/8-2 yards of contrast fabric for the band if desired. The pajamas take about 5 1/4-6 yards of 45" cotton or cotton flannel or 4 yards for the short version. NOTE: We strongly recommend you make the apron, robe, and PJ s in size small to use only as samples to show your students. This may make a difference in your fabric choices. Your students, of course, will make them to wear. Camera to record your experiences. Sweater to wear in classroom if needed. Empty suitcase for possible fabric purchases (Fabric Depot also ships.) Pencil and tablet for note taking. Recommended reading before you attend the training and available on the Palmer/Pletsch Web site, www.palmerpletsch.com: The Business of Teaching Sewing by Pati Palmer and Marcy Miller. Write down any questions you have or items you d like to discuss from the book. Former students recommend bringing an empty suitcase just in case you buy fabric at some of our noted fabric stores (especially if you are going on the Shop til You Drop trip!). Fabric Depot will ship fabric home for you. You need to keep a list of purchases that will go into the box for UPS records. You will be charged for the shipping, but it may be less than paying for more luggage. Mark your supplies with your name before class. INCLUDED IN THE CLASS: Two Palmer/Pletsch patterns (chef s apron and robe/pajamas) created for teaching the levels of beginning sewing. A notebook and sample fabric with instructions. Camera-ready originals for you to use when you teach. The book Mother Pletsch s Painless Sewing 4 th edition by Pati Palmer and Susan Pletsch, is a great beginner/update fashion sewing book which can be used in your classes as a reference. It is also full of fun cartoons about sewing. It is available at Fabric Depot or for you to order in quantity from Palmer/Pletsch at wholesale prices to sell to your students.

Palmer/Pletsch Certified Sewing Instructors: This workshop will give you 40 PDUs. Palmer/Pletsch Certification for Teachers If you are not already a CSI, after completing this teacher training workshop you are qualified to apply to be a Palmer/Pletsch Certified Sewing Instructor. If you apply within 30 days of the workshop, you will be able to count this workshop as 40 points toward your 100 needed to renew in one year. Learn more and download the forms at http://www.palmerpletsch.com/certification/ Palmer/Pletsch CSIs are listed on the Palmer/Pletsch website certified teacher locator. OPTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: SHOP TIL YOU DROP FABRIC STORE TOUR This is an optional program offered the day following the workshop. We have so many unique fabric stores more per capita than most cities in the world. The day after the workshop Pati Palmer and Marta Alto will be your guides transporting you to and helping you shop at our best stores. We will pick you up at the hotel at 9:15 to take you to fabric stores, lunch, and back to hotel by 6:00. (A minimum of 4 people is needed to offer the shopping trip.) HAVE YOUR COLORS DONE! If it has been years since you ve had your colors done or if you never have, Ethel Harms is an amazing image consultant who has developed her own color and cosmetic line. This is not a canned color palette. Ethel hand builds your palette according to your hair, eyes, and skin colors. If you make an appointment with her the day or evening before the workshop, she will bring you your color palette two days later and show you how to shop with it. Or, book with her any available evening during the workshop. You can cab to Ethel s studio in Lake Oswego, but cabs have been quite unreliable. Uber is now available in Portland. You do need to download the app and set up an account first. E-mail Ethel at eharms@msn.com for an appointment or call 503/699-5501. Color Analysis price for Palmer/Pletsch Workshop Students is $175. For more about Ethel Harms, visit www.yourimageconsultant.com.

TOUR THE AREA If you have time to tour our beautiful region before or after the workshop, or if you have a companion with you who came to tour, here are just a few suggestions: Drive the loop going up into the stunning Columbia River Gorge on Highway 84. At Hood River, turn up to Mt. Hood, visit the historic Timberline Lodge, and drive back to Portland on Highway 26. We are only 1 1/2 hours from the coast. The MAX line to downtown is just across from the Monarch Hotel. The Spirit of Portland has a wonderful lunch and dinner river cruise that is quite reasonable and showcases why we are called the "city of bridges." Google can provide more information.
