Zool. Surv. India Fauna of Uttar Pradesh, State Fauna Series, 22 (Part-2) : 439-443, 2015 INSECTA : COLEOPTERA : COCCINELLIDAE S.K. GHOSH, R.K. KUSHWAHA, S.K. CHAKRABORTY and V.D. HEGDE* Zoological Survey of India, M-Block, New Alipore, Kolkata-700 053. *Corresponding author: hegde67@yahoo.co.in INTRODUCTION The Coccinellidae beetles, commonly called Ladybird Beetles or Ladybugs are very common insects found in agricultural fields and forests. The degree of popularity enjoyed by ladybugs must surely be connected with the helping hand these voracious predators give us in controlling aphid pests on vital crops. Mainly brightly coloured red or yellow usually spotted or blotched with black; distinctive oval or almost round body, noticeably dome shaped on top and flattened beneath; antennae short and weakly clubbed, head hardly visible from above. They vary in size from few millimetres to almost square inch size. Since they can cause severe damage (only the members of the sub-family Epilachninae) to the agricultural crops, they are treated as economically important insects. A perusal of literature reveals that, no comprehensive work has been done by any researcher on Lady Bird Beetles (Coccinellidae) of Uttar Pradesh state Hence, CoccinellidaeFaunaof Uttar Pradesh state is based on the earlier scattered reports, collections of earlier and recent faunistic surveys to most of the districts of this state. METHODOLOGY The specimens were collected from districts Lucknow, Bulandshahar, Allahabad, Etah, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Saharanpur, Shahjahanpur, Faizabad, Moradabad, Ballia, Varanasi, Pilibhit, Kanpur, Hardoi, Sitapur, Agra, Noida, Rampur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Etawah, and Bareilly. After sorting, specimens were set-pinned and labelled. Identification was done with the help of available literature and reference collections. SYSTEMATIC LIST Family COCCINELLIDAE Subfamily 1.
