. Military Uniform Description for the Irish Guards* The Foot Guards share a number of uniform distinctions, whilst jealously guarding their individual traditions. The Irish Guards were formed by the command of Queen Victoria in 1900, to recognise the roll that Irish Regiments had played in the South African War. Upon close inspection it can be seen that the insignia designs and motto associated with the Order of St Patrick (1783) have been authorised for use by the Irish Guards. This distinguishes them when in uniform from the other Foot Guards Regiments. When in full dress or guard order, the Irish Guards can be recognised by the tunic being buttoned in groups of four (as the fourth senior Foot Guards regiment), with the button bearing the design of a harp with a St Edward s Crown above. Collar insignia is of left and right facing shamrock. For officers, this is silver wire hand embroidery on a gold wire hand embroidered ground. The tunic is edged with white piping and the tunic facings beneath the fine hand embroidery are blue. The heavy scarlet melton wool cloth of the tunic has changed little since the time of Waterloo (1815). It is seen in wave upon wave of scarlet; as Her Majesty s Foot Guards see her safely back down the Mall to Buckingham Palace, following her Birthday Parade of Trooping the Colour on Horse Guards Parade. H M The Queen s appointment of Prince William as Colonel of The Irish Guards, made it necessary for him to have uniform and headdress for this his first honorary appointment within the Army. Following careful measurement, more than 20 of the finest materials and components had to be assembled before this particular officers uniform can be made. Each and every Foot Guards officer s uniform is still handmade and is truly bespoke. It involves the skills of some of the finest craftsmen and women within the Kingdom, from the three Royal Warrant holding companies of Kashket & Partners, Firmin & Sons and Patey Hats. * For information purposes only, not part of an official press release. . The Household Cavalry* The Household Cavalry comprises the Life Guards and the Blues & Royals (Royal Horse Guards/ 1st Dragoons). In 1992 the regiments formed a union; Squadrons from the Household Cavalry Regiment (HCR) operating as a force reconnaissance regiment and the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR) which carries out State and Public Duties. Officers of the Blues & Royals in dismounted review order have ornately plaited gold wire aiguillettes with gold wire shoulder chords to which are attached the silver wire hand embroidered rank markings that have black cloth backing. The aiguillettes end in two coils with gilt metal trophy tags attached. Gold lace cross-belt with cartouche box with a gilt Royal Coat of Arms mount, gold lace waist belt with gold lace sword slings and an ornate gilt waist plate with a gilt Royal Coat of Arms mount, are worn when a member of the Royal Family is present. The tunic is buttoned evenly with the gilt button bearing the design in script RHG 1D (Royal Horse Guards/ 1st Dragoons), with a St Edward s Crown above. The collar, cuffs and lower back is heavily hand embroidered in gold wire. The tunic is edged with scarlet piping and the tunic facings beneath the fine embroidery are scarlet. The tunic is of heavy blue melton wool cloth. This order of dress when worn with the plumed helmet is seen at its best when the Household Cavalry parade dismounted at the annual Garter Ceremony at Windsor Castle in June. * For information purposes only, not part of an official press release.
