Getting Started Getting Started About This Guide What s the purpose of this guide? This leader guide provides a master reference document to help you prepare for and deliver the Salon Styling Essentials program. What will I find in the guide? This leader guide is a comprehensive package that contains the workshop delivery sequence checklists of necessary materials and equipment presentation scripts and key points to cover, and instructions for managing exercises, case studies, and other instructional activities. 2012 Page iii

About This Guide Getting Started How is this guide organized? This section, Getting Started, contains all of the preparation information for the Salon Styling Essentials program, such as learning objectives, pre-work, required materials, and room set-up. Following this section is the Training At A Glance table. This table can serve as your overview reference, showing the module names, timings, and process descriptions for the entire program. Finally, the program itself is divided into modules, each of which is comprised of one or more lessons. A module is a self-contained portion of the program, usually lasting anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes, while a lesson is a shorter (typically 5-20 minute) topic area. Each module begins with a one-page summary showing the Purpose, Time, Process, and Materials for the module. Use these summary pages to get an overview of the module that follows. 2012 Page iv

Getting Started About This Guide, continued How is the text laid out in this guide? Every action in the program is described in this guide by a text block like this one, with a margin icon, a title line, and the actual text. The icons are designed to help catch your eye and draw quick attention to what to do and how to do it. For example, the icon to the left indicates that you, the instructor, say something next. The title line gives a brief description of what to do, and is followed by the actual script, instruction set, key points, etc. that are needed to complete the action. A complete list of the margin icons used in this guide is provided on the following page. IMPORTANT NOTE You may also occasionally find important notes such as this one in the text of this guide. These shaded boxes provide particularly important information in an attention-getting format. 2012 Page v

Hang the product benefit category posters at equal distances from each other, spanning the table(s). Note: Do not organize the products into their appropriate product benefit categories. Place all the products on the table randomly, but do make them look neat (i.e., spread them out evenly, labels facing out, etc.). The participants will be organizing the products into the appropriate product benefit categories during an activity. Instructor Preparation Review the Aveda Global Education & Events Standards guide to ensure Aveda s global training standards are being met. Use the Program Set-Up Checklist in the Appendix as your guide. Prepare any educational support tools (e.g., presectioned mannequin heads and flipchart diagrams) in advance. Prepare a wellness activity for the beginning of the class. Read through this facilitator guide, and make sure you are comfortable with the styling techniques. Wavy Results Curly Results Take participants through the styling products and techniques used to achieve various wavy results, including wavy with natural diffuse, wavy set, wavy with curling iron and wavy with flat iron and give them the opportunity to create a customized, wavy-result look for one of their salon guests. Take participants through the styling products and techniques used to achieve various curly results, including curly with natural diffuse, curly wet set, curly with curling iron and curly with flat iron and give them the opportunity to create a customized, wavy-result look for one of their salon guests. 2012 Page xiv

Training At A Glance 15 minutes Take Action Review the learning objectives, perform the least used products activity to prevent participants from relying on the same products and to help them develop confidence in using every Aveda styling product. 2012 Page xv

Introduction Introduction Goal The purpose and goal of this module is to welcome participants, introduce them to the concept of results and how different products yield different results and review the Aveda product benefit categories and their varying levels of degree. Time 1 hour (and one 15-minute break) Overview Welcome participants; review housekeeping information and learning objectives; lead a wellness and mission activity; and perform the product word, most/least used products and product benefit categories activities to connect participants to the information they are about to learn. Materials Needed See the Required Materials list at the beginning of this guide. 2012 Page 1

Welcome Introduction Slide 1 SAY Welcome to Salon Styling Essentials. I am (introduce yourself and share why you re excited to teach this class). IMPORTANT NOTE Share any housekeeping information, including bathroom location, times of breaks, etc. Slide 2 2012 Page 2

Welcome Introduction SAY Let s review our learning objectives for the day. During this class, you will learn: The IS/GIVES/HOW behind every Aveda styling product How to style all hair types with the right blend of products and techniques How to determine and create your guest s desired style The art of product layering Fundamental styling skills IMPORTANT NOTE Make a commitment to participants about the practical value of the class. SAY Before we begin today s training, let s prepare our minds and bodies for what we re about to experience. ACTIVITY: WELLNESS Perform a wellness activity of your choice. 2012 Page 3

Welcome Introduction Slide 3 SAY This class is all about using Aveda products to achieve results. And as we all know, Aveda strives to achieve results not just in the world of beauty, but within the world itself. Let s remind ourselves of the Aveda mission now. IMPORTANT NOTE Recite the mission or run your favorite mission activity. connect 2012 Page 4

Welcome Introduction Slide 4 SAY As a table group, decide on one of your favorite Aveda styling products. Using only the letters in the product s name, try to come up with as many different words as you can. ACTIVITY: PRODUCT WORD BRAINSTORM Give each table group a piece of flipchart paper to post to the wall. Instruct groups to write the name of their chosen product across the top of the flipchart page, then to brainstorm as many words as possible and write them on the flipchart page. Give table groups 5 10 minutes to complete the activity. ASK How many words did you come up with? (Accept any answer, and congratulate the table group that came up with the most words.) SAY As you just experienced (in a way), one product can yield so 2012 Page 5

Introduction many different results. Note: If two table groups chose the same product, note that although they share some of the same words, they probably came up with different words as well. If two table groups did not choose the same product, make this point by saying, If two groups had chosen the same product, they probably would have come up with different words. Salon Styling Essentials is about combining Aveda styling products with styling techniques to achieve the desired end result. It s also about discovering that products can be used in different ways to achieve altogether different results. attend SAY During that last activity, you had one word from which you used to create a plethora of different words. Similarly, Aveda has one set of products (granted, a rather large set) that you can use to create any look imaginable. That s how you should think about styling. ASK What combination of tools can give you the results you and your guests are looking for? (Accept any answer.) 2012 Page 6

Introduction Slide 5 SAY Now let s tie the idea of results to actual products. Visualize your daily styling routine in the salon and whether you ve developed any patterns in which you use the same products consistently or avoid using others altogether. Most/Least Used Products Direct learners to the Participant Placemat. ACTIVITY: MOST/LEAST USED PRODUCTS Instruct participants to record the following three things 2012 Page 7

Introduction on their placemat: 1. The prep product they use most 2. The styling product they use most 3. The finish product they use most Instruct participants to record the following three things on their placemat: 1. The prep product they use least 2. The styling product they use least 3. The finish product they use least After participants have recorded their most and least used prep, style and finish products, instruct them to share them in their table groups and to explain why they gravitate toward and away from these products. Give participants 5 10 minutes to complete the activity. ASK What products do you work with the most on a daily basis? Why? (Accept any answer.) What products do you work with the least on a daily basis? Why? (Accept any answer.) image 2012 Page 8

Introduction ASK Are you ever disappointed because your favorite product did not yield the result you were hoping for? Have your guests ever been disappointed? (Accept any answer.) Slide 6 SAY Einstein said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Whether or not you realize it, relying on the same products every day or avoiding others entirely may be influencing your results you re getting, especially when you look at the wide range of guests for whom you provide services. Even if several guests are seeking the same result, they most likely have different hair types that you need to take into consideration when creating the prep, style, finish formula to achieve their desired style. inform 2012 Page 9

Introduction Slide 7 SAY Let s see how well you know Aveda s styling products and the product benefit categories. ACTIVITY: PRODUCT BENEFIT CATEGORIES Assign each table group two product benefit categories. Instruct table groups to go to the product table(s) you have set up along the wall. At the product table, instruct table groups to pick out the products that correspond to the product benefit categories you assigned them. Once table groups have picked out the products that correspond to their assigned product benefit categories, instruct them to put the products in order of degree. For example, the table group that has been assigned the Hold with Hair Spray category should order the products from lightest hold to firmest hold. Give participants 10 minutes to complete the activity. After the participants have completed the activity, engage the class as a group to check each others product benefit categories (e.g., have the table group that was assigned Add Shine and Hold with Hair Spray categories check the table group that was assigned Prepare for Styling and Create Hold ). Did the table groups organize the products correctly? 2012 Page 10

Introduction Slide 8 SAY Great job organizing the products into their correct product benefit categories and according to their varying degrees. During the rest of this class, we will be using these products individually and in combination with each other to really see these benefits in action. Before we move on, let s review the product benefit categories in further detail. IMPORTANT NOTE Give each table group a Hair Styling Prep Style Finish Product Positioning Chart. Review the product benefit categories with the class as a group, including the IS/GIVES/HOW behind each product. Facilitate a discussion 2012 Page 11

Introduction about the level of structure and hold, softness and shine and weight and movement in each product and how they can be used most effectively. Share that during the class, they will be using these products individually and in combination with each other to really understand this concept. Slide 9 SAY Let s take a quick break before diving into the first result. IMPORTANT NOTE Give participants a specific time to be back in the room. 2012 Page 12

Introduction 15-MINUTE BREAK Transition to Straight Results 2012 Page 13

Straight Results Straight Results Goal The purpose and goal of this module is to teach and practice using Aveda styling products and other tools to achieve various straight results, experience the product benefits in action and brainstorm ways to use product knowledge and benefits to inform a customized, straightresult look. Time 1 hour, 30 minutes (and one-hour lunch break) Overview Take participants through the styling products and techniques used to achieve various straight results, including straight with no volume (flat), straight with volume (smooth) and straight with volume and texture and give them the opportunity to create a customized, straight-result look for one of their salon guests. Materials Needed See the Required Materials list at the beginning of this guide. 2012 Page 14

Straight with No Volume (Flat) Straight Results inform practice Slide 10 Straight Results Direct learners to the Participant Placemat. 2012 Page 15

Straight Results SAY We are first going to focus on how to use different styling products and techniques to achieve three different straight results. As we go through each result, record your thoughts and observations about the products hold, shine, movement and weight on your placemat. In quadrant 1, we re going to create a straight with no volume (flat) result using the following products: Prep: Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother Style: Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener Finish: Light Elements Smoothing Fluid ACTIVITY: DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE STRAIGHT WITH NO VOLUME (FLAT) Instruct participants to section their mannequin heads into three quadrants. In quadrant 1, demonstrate the straight with no volume (flat) result in Simon Says mode, including appropriate application of products. As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. 2012 Page 16

Straight Results IMPORTANT NOTE Demonstrate the flat wrap technique using the blow dryer with nozzle, following the Mason Pearson brush approximately four inches away and angling it so that the air flows down the length of the hair shaft. When hair is completely dry, take diagonal partings and use the flat iron from mid-shaft to ends, moving the heat straight down through the hair. 2012 Page 17

Straight Results Straight with Volume (Smooth) inform practice Slide 11 Straight Results Direct learners to the Participant Placemat. SAY In quadrant 2, we re going to create a straight with volume (smooth) result using the following products: Prep: Brilliant Damage Control Style: Phomollient Styling Foam Finish: Pure Abundance TM Volumizing Hair Spray or Air Control TM Hair Spray As we go through this particular straight result, record your thoughts and observations about the products hold, shine, 2012 Page 18

Straight with Volume (Smooth) Straight Results movement and weight on your placemat. ACTIVITY: DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE STRAIGHT WITH VOLUME (SMOOTH) In quadrant 2, demonstrate the straight with volume (smooth) result in Simon Says mode, including appropriate application of products. As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. IMPORTANT NOTE Emphasize that the paddle brush works well in achieving a straight result with volume. The brush s bigger surface area and open airflow design move heat evenly through the hair when blow-drying, resulting in a light, bouncy finish with a lot of movement. Again, demonstrate the flat wrap technique using the blow dryer with nozzle, following the paddle brush down the length of the hair shaft until it is completely dry. Before moving on to the next section, lift the hair up from the scalp with the paddle brush and move through the ends once more to achieve natural lift and to seal in shine. 2012 Page 19

Straight Results Straight with Volume and Texture inform practice Slide 12 Straight Results Direct learners to the Participant Placemat. SAY In quadrant 3, we re going to create a straight with volume and texture result using the following products: Prep: Pure Abundance Style-Prep Style: Volumizing Tonic Finish: Pure Abundance TM Hair Potion 2012 Page 20

Straight with Volume and Texture Straight Results ACTIVITY: DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE STRAIGHT WITH VOLUME AND TEXTURE In quadrant 3, demonstrate the straight with volume and texture result in Simon Says mode, including appropriate application of products. As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. IMPORTANT NOTE Demonstrate how to divide the hair into horizontal subsections that are the same width as the round brush. Using the blow dryer with nozzle, pull the hair away from the head and smooth the cuticle by following the round brush down the length of the hair shaft to the ends, making sure to maintain consistent airflow. Emphasize the importance of drying each section completely, as damp hair will result in frizziness. Straight Results Direct learners to the Participant Placemat. ASK What did you observe about the products hold, shine, 2012 Page 21

Straight Results movement and weight in each of the straight results? (Accept any answer, but point out the differences in the amount of hold, shine, movement and weight in each of the three styles.) What is the difference between the Smooth Infusion TM Style-Prep Smoother TM that we used in quadrant 1 and the Brilliant Damage Control that we used in quadrant 2? (Listen for: Both protect hair from heat styling, but Smooth Infusion TM Style-Prep Smoother TM smooths hair and defends against humidity and Brilliant Damage Control helps reduce breakage. What is the difference between the Phomollient TM Styling Foam that we used in quadrant 2 and the Volumizing Tonic TM that we used in quadrant 3? (Listen for: Phomollient TM Styling Foam gives all-over volume and Volumizing Tonic TM gives targeted lift at the roots.) Could we have used Phomollient TM Styling Foam in place of Volumizing Tonic TM in quadrant 2? (Listen for: Yes, it just would have created more all-over volume in the final style.) Why did we use Pure Abundance TM Hair Potion in quadrant 3? (Listen for: Pure Abundance Hair Potion creates texture. Without it, the final style would have had volume, but no texture.) extend 2012 Page 22

Straight Results refine SAY Now that you ve practiced using different styling products and techniques to achieve three different straight results, it s time to think about how to use what you just learned to inform a customized, straight-result look. ACTIVITY: CUSTOMIZED STRAIGHT RESULT Instruct participants to think about one of their regular straight-haired salon guests and how that person likes them to style their hair. Using what they just learned and what they know of their guest s hair, instruct participants to create a customized, straight-result look for that guest on a blank head sheet and to record which prep, style and finish products they would to use to achieve that result. After participants have created their look, have them present their head sheet to the class. Ask participants to describe their guest s hair; the particular style they want to achieve; the prep, style and finish products they would use to achieve that result and why. As each participant presents their look, ask the class to provide constructive feedback about what they like and what could be improved. ASK Are there any questions about straight results before we move on? (Answer any questions.) 2012 Page 23

Straight Results Slide 13 SAY Let s take a lunch break before moving on to the next result. IMPORTANT NOTE Give participants a specific time to be back in the room and ready for the second half of the class. 1-HOUR LUNCH BREAK Transition to Wavy Results 2012 Page 24

Wavy Results Wavy Results Goal The purpose and goal of this module is to teach and practice using Aveda styling products and other tools to achieve various wavy results, experience the product benefits in action and brainstorm ways to use product knowledge and benefits to inform a customized, wavy-result look. Time 1 hour, 30 minutes Overview Take participants through the styling products and techniques used to achieve various wavy results, including wavy with natural diffuse, wavy set, wavy with curling iron and wavy with flat iron and give them the opportunity to create a customized, wavy-result look for one of their salon guests. Materials Needed See the Required Materials list at the beginning of this guide. 2012 Page 25

Wavy with Natural Diffuse Wavy Results Wavy Results Direct learners to the Participant Placemat. SAY Now we re going to focus on how to use different styling products and techniques to achieve four different wavy results. As we go through each result, record your thoughts and observations about the products hold, shine, movement and weight on your placemat. In quadrant 1, we re going to create a wavy with natural diffuse result using the following products: Prep: Be Curly Style-Prep Style: Be Curly Curl Enhancer Finish: Witch Hazel Light Hold Hair Spray or Brilliant Medium Hold Hair Spray ACTIVITY: DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE WAVY WITH NATURAL DIFFUSE Instruct participants to section their mannequin heads into four quadrants. In quadrant 1, demonstrate the wavy with natural diffuse result in Simon Says mode, including appropriate application of products. As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. 2012 Page 27

Wavy Results IMPORTANT NOTE Emphasize the importance of combing the product through the hair to distribute it evenly and to eliminate any knots or tangles. Demonstrate how to scrunch the hair, gently shaping it with your fingers into the style you want. Then, with a diffuser set on low heat and low airflow, gently place sections of hair into the diffuser and dry. Emphasize placing the diffuser close to the roots and holding it in place until the hair dries. 2012 Page 28

Wavy Results Wavy Set inform practice Slide 16 Wavy Results Direct learners to the Participant Placemat. SAY In quadrant 2, we re going to create a wavy set result using 2012 Page 29

Wavy Results the following products: Prep: Brilliant Damage Control Style: Confixor Liquid Gel Finish: Air Control TM Hair Spray As we go through this particular wavy result, record your thoughts and observations about the products hold, shine, movement and weight on your placemat. ACTIVITY: DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE WAVY SET In quadrant 2, demonstrate the wavy set result in Simon Says mode, including appropriate application of products. As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. IMPORTANT NOTE Demonstrate how to section the hair first into vertical oneinch sections through the sides and then horizontal sections through the top. Brush through each section and using hot rollers, hold the hair at a 90-degree angle and roll the hair away from the face, starting at the ends and securing at the scalp. Emphasize that the hair should have cooled completely before removing the rollers and brushing through each section. 2012 Page 30

As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. IMPORTANT NOTE Demonstrate how to blow-dry the hair straight. Note: Because you will also need to blow-dry quadrant 4 straight, instruct participants to blow-dry both quadrants 3 and 4 straight to save time. Use a wide-barrel curling iron to curl half-inch sections all the way to the root. After holding for 10 15 seconds, release the curl, spray with hair spray, roll the curl back up using your fingers and secure the curl in place with a hair clip. Emphasize ensuring the hair has cooled completely before removing the clips. 2012 Page 32

ACTIVITY: DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE WAVY WITH FLAT IRON In quadrant 4, demonstrate the wavy with flat iron result in Simon Says mode, including appropriate application of products. As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. IMPORTANT NOTE Demonstrate how to separate hair into small sections that are no bigger than the flat iron. Quickly run the iron over the section once or twice, pressing very lightly. Emphasize that though you aren t going to straighten the hair, heating the hair will help it wave more easily. Starting at the roots, demonstrate how to wrap the hair around the top plate of the iron, turning it 180 degrees and clapping the iron down the section until you reach the ends. Cup the curled section in your hand to cool, then twist the strand around your fingers to set the wave. Wavy Results Direct learners to the Participant Placemat. 2012 Page 34

Wavy Results ASK What did you observe about the products hold, shine, movement and weight in each of the wavy results? (Accept any answer, but point out the differences in the amount of hold, shine, movement and weight in each of the four styles.) Why did we use Be Curly TM Style-Prep in quadrant 1 rather than Brilliant Damage Control, like we did in the other three quadrants? (Listen for: We wanted to set the foundation for a naturally wavy style; therefore, Be Curly TM Style-Prep was the best product to use. Further, we used the blow dryer on the lowest heat and airflow settings, so protecting the hair from damage wasn t the primary concern.) Why did we use Confixor TM Liquid Gel in quadrants 2 4 rather than Be Curly TM Curl Enhancer? (Listen for: In quadrants 2 4, we used a variety of heat styling tools to create wave, not to enhance natural wave. Further, the styles we created necessitated using a product that would provide enough hold to set the style.) Could we have used a different hair spray in any of the quadrants? (Listen for: Yes, because most of Aveda s hair sprays are for all hair types, we d just need to choose the hair spray that would provide the level of hold we wanted in the final style.) extend refine 2012 Page 35

Wavy Results SAY Now that you ve practiced using different styling products and techniques to achieve four different wavy results, it s time to think about how to use what you just learned to inform a customized, wavy-result look. ACTIVITY: CUSTOMIZED WAVY RESULT Instruct participants to think about one of their regular wavy-haired salon guests and how that person likes them to style their hair. Using what they just learned and what they know of their guest s hair, instruct participants to create a customized, wavy-result look for that guest on a blank head sheet and to record which prep, style and finish products they would to use to achieve that result. ASK Are there any questions about wavy results before we move on? (Answer any questions.) Transition to Curly Results 2012 Page 36

Curly Results SAY Now we re going to focus on how to use different styling products and techniques to achieve four different curly results. As we go through each result, record your thoughts and observations about the products hold, shine, movement and weight on your placemat. In quadrant 1, we re going to create a curly with natural diffuse result, either intensifying the curl or elongating the curl. To intensify the curl, use the following products: Prep: Be Curly Style-Prep Style: Be Curly Curl Enhancer Finish: Brilliant Medium Hold Hair Spray To elongate the curl, use the following products: Prep: Be Curly Style-Prep Style: Be Curly Curl Controller Finish: Be Curly Curl Enhancing Hair Spray ACTIVITY: DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE CURLY WITH NATURAL DIFFUSE Instruct participants to section their mannequin heads into four quadrants. In quadrant 1, demonstrate the curly with natural diffuse result in Simon Says mode, including appropriate application of products. As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. Note: Make sure both curly with natural diffuse results (intensified curl and elongated curl) are represented. You may want to instruct half of class to create the intensified curl look and the other half to create the elongated curl look. 2012 Page 40

Curly Results IMPORTANT NOTE As with the wavy with natural diffuse result, emphasize the importance of combing the product through the hair to distribute it evenly and to eliminate any knots. Demonstrate how to pinch the ends of the hair and shake it to set the natural curl pattern. Then, with a diffuser set on low heat and low airflow, place the diffuser close to the roots and hold it there until the hair is completely dry. Emphasize not using your hands while diffusing, as doing so creates frizz and can cause curls to lose their shape. 2012 Page 41

SAY In quadrant 2, we re going to create a curly wet set result using the following products: Prep: Brilliant Damage Control Style: Flax Seed Aloe Strong Hold Sculpturing Gel Finish: Control Force TM Firm Hold Hair Spray As we go through this particular curly result, record your thoughts and observations about the products hold, shine, movement and weight on your placemat. 2012 Page 42

Curly Wet Set Curly Results ACTIVITY: DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE CURLY WET SET In quadrant 2, demonstrate the curly wet set result in Simon Says mode, including appropriate application of products. As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. IMPORTANT NOTE Demonstrate how to section the hair first into vertical oneinch sections through the sides and then horizontal sections through the top. Brush through each section and using magnetic rollers, hold the hair at a 90-degree angle and roll the hair away from the face, starting at the ends and securing at the scalp. Emphasize ensuring the hair has cooled completely before removing the rollers and brushing through each section. 2012 Page 43

As you demonstrate, instruct participants to complete the same step. Provide coaching and tips as they practice. IMPORTANT NOTE Remind participants how to blow-dry the hair using the straight with volume technique. Note: Because you will also need to blow-dry quadrant 4 using the straight with volume technique, instruct participants to blow-dry both quadrants 3 and 4 using this technique to save time. Demonstrate how to divide the hair into manageable, oneinch, horizontal sections. Comb through each section and starting at the roots, use a Marcel iron and wrap the section around the barrel, holding for 10 20 seconds. If you want to set the hair, secure the curl in place with a hair clip. To finish, break up the curls using your fingers or loosen them using a flat brush. 2012 Page 45
