Australian Standard for High Visibility Safety Garments: AS/NZS 4602: 1999 Class D/N Garments (Day/Night) Class D/N Garments are the only garment type that afford the wearer 24 hour visibility. Designed for both day and night use, they comprise approximately 4 metres of 50mm retro-reflective materials on a fluorescent or other high visibility background material. Class N Garments (Night) Class N Garments are designed to provide the wearer with high visibility at night when viewed typically by drivers of approaching vehicles. The colour of the background material of Class N Garments is not specified, as visibility is achieved by the incorporation of approximately 4 metres of 50mm retro-reflective material. Class N garments should not be worn during daylight hours where the absence of high daytime visibility material may place the wearer at risk. Class D Garments (Day) Class D Garments are designed to provide the wearer with high visibility during the day. The colour of the background material of Class D Garments must comply with AS/NZS1906.4:1997 and must exceed 0.4 of a square metre area. Class D garments are not effective in low light areas. To ensure the highest safety levels are reached, all 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material fabrics and films exceed the highest brightness category level of AS/NZS 1906.4:1997, and are manufactured within an ISO 9002 controlled manufacturing environment. This information is intended for advice only, and should be used in conjunction with the standard in its entirety. ENLIGHTENING FACT At night, you are more visible in a white garment than a Class D Garment - Fluorescence is a day time only phenomenon - it needs UV from the sun to make it glow
