The Museum will be closed on Thursday, November 22 in celebration of Thanksgiving. Research Library Located at 7 Fair Street, the library is open year-round: Monday, Thursday, and Friday, 10-4; Tuesday, 11-4; closed Wednesdays, weekends, & legal holidays. Administrative Offices 'Sconset Photo Album: Call for Submissions As part of the NHA's 2008 exhibition 'Sconset: 02564, we will have on display a 'Sconset family photo album that includes pictures from individuals and families who would like to participate. Each individual or family will have one page of their own, and are asked to submit photographs for inclusion. The exhibition will be a "digital photo album" based upon your original photos. To participate, please follow the instructions below: We prefer digital files of your photographs, which can be e-mailed, or sent on a CD to the addresses below. If you are unable to make digital files of your photos, you can send them to us for "scan and return." (You may also decide to donate them to the NHA collection, in which case, please indicate that they are a donation.) What to submit: 1) Six to eight photos; they can be historic or more recent images of you and your family in 'Sconset or of other 'Sconset scenes. 2) A list of short, specific captions with each photo, with names properly spelled. 3) A short paragraph describing "What 'Sconset Means to Me (or my Family)." 4) Indicate how you would like your name or family name to appear. Some people may wish to abbreviate their name, as this is

We invite you to enjoy the spirit of the season with three craft workshops, beginning at 4:00 P.M. and lasting for three hours. Tuesday, November 6, Embossed Velvet Wreath This session will feature an embossing technique to produce leaves and decorations that may be used for years to come. Using velvet and rubber stamps, you'll learn the versatile technique of creating designs on fabric, which may then be applied to wreaths, garlands, or holiday centerpieces. Wednesday, November 7, Holiday Theorem Painting This second session will feature Theorem Painting in the style of the 1850s, rendered on velvet and paper. Using stencils and oil paints, students will be taught how to create updated versions of this popular technique. Completed work on paper will be perfect for ornaments, gift tags, place cards, or greeting cards; the velvet work will be suitable for framing. Thursday, November 8, Make a Miniature Sailors Valentine This last session will be spent creating miniature Sailors Valentines in the style of shell collages from the whaling days. Using small shells in a range of natural colors, participants will create patterns and textures to fill small boxes. These little treasures, in ornament-size boxes, can be used as gifts, decorations, or special keepsakes of your own. All materials and tools will be provided. Enrollment is limited, and early registration is recommended. Each class is $50 for NHA members, $75 for nonmembers. The cost to take all three classes is $125 for NHA members, $175. for nonmembers.

Geoffrey and Elizabeth Thayer Verney Fellowship Available Application deadline December 31, 2007 In an effort to enhance the public's knowledge and understanding of the heritage of Nantucket, Massachusetts, the Nantucket Historical Association offers an annual fellowship, the E. Geoffrey and Elizabeth Thayer Verney Fellowship. Established in 1999, the award encourages research in the collections of the Nantucket Historical Association and other Nantucket repositories and is open to academics, graduate students, and independent scholars. Topics of research for recent scholars have included health aboard whaleships, women at sea, scrimshaw, samplers, local artists, Nantucket's architectural heritage, Quakerism, the African- American and Cape Verdean communities, the Quaise Asylum, and abolitionism. Nantucket History Database The Nantucket History Database is the Nantucket Historical Association's "online clipping file." Exhibitions Landmarks of Nantucket! Closing November 12 Landmarks of Nantucket! is a photographic exhibition by thirty-four

Nantucket sixth-seventh- and eighth-graders from Cyrus Peirce Middle School, who are participating in the NHA's first studentcurated photographic exhibition. This exhibition showcases what the students consider to be their cherished Nantucket landmarks. This collaborative exhibition was organized by the NHA, the Nantucket Preservation Trust, and Sustainable Nantucket. Funding for this special program was made possible by a grant from the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation. The exhibition will be on display through November 12. Hadwen & Barney Candle Factory, part of the restored Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street Nantucket Art Colony, 1920-45 Closing November 12 The NHA's annual major exhibition, The Nantucket Art Colony, 1920-45, features the work of the group of painters and teachers who came to Nantucket and formed the "paradise and dream come true" for artists that became the Nantucket Art Colony. Elizabeth Rebecca Coffin Paintings Closing November 12 Born of Nantucket Quaker parentage, Coffin studied at Vassar College, The Hague Academy of Fine Arts, and the Art Students League in New York. She was a pupil of Thomas Eakins, whose striking portrait of the artist will be included in the exhibition, with kind permission of the Trustees of the Coffin School. Beginning in the 1880s, Coffin began to summer regularly on Nantucket and captured many of the scenes of picturesque life that made post-whaling Nantucket so attractive to artists at the end of the nineteenth century. Highlights of the exhibition include Coffin's own remarkable self-portrait, Artist and Model in the Studio (ca. 1890), her interior scene, Captain Burdett in His Boathouse (1893), and the striking large canvas Seaweed Gatherers (1889), loaned with permission of the Trustees of the Coffin School. Page 5 of 6 is open during regular library hours. Events Nantucket History in a Brown Bag The free Food for Thought Series, Thursdays, Noon to 1 P.M. Bring your lunch! November 1: "The History of Nantucket's Newspapers" hosted by Lee Rand Burne. Instrumental in starting the Newspaper Project at the Atheneum-which produced the invaluable collection of microfilmed Nantucket newspapers now in the collections of the Atheneum, the Historical Association Research Library, and the Boston Public Library-Burne has garnered extensive knowledge about Nantucket newspapers over the years. She will relate episodes from Nantucket's printed past, sharing stories about the more than forty newspapers published on Nantucket from 1816 to the present. The fascinating Nantucket newspaper story provides highlights full of drama and historical significance, both local and global. November 8: "Oil: From Cetaceans to OPEC" hosted by Al Crosby. Local environmental historian and author Al Crosby will put Nantucket's whaling era into its proper historical context, explaining what was used for lighting before whale oil and spermaceti candles, and what came later. November 15: "Island Personalities" hosted by Bob Mooney. Island historian and NHA Research Fellow Bob Mooney has written widely on island personalities, especially those who were here "only yesterday." He will share some of these stories, and hopefully have a few local personalities reflect on this unique place. November 29: "The Compass Rose: Documenting the Island's Past" hosted by John Stanton. Stanton will discuss the film-making process and what it took to restore this famous Nantucket landmark at the corner of Main and Union Streets. His talk will focus on the art of documentary film. Heralding the holiday season: Festival of Wreaths & Festival of Trees Join us for two events that have become island traditions! Held in the Whaling Museum, the Festival of Wreaths silent auction features more than 70 wreaths made by community members and artists and sponsored by businesses and nonprofit organizations.
