WELCOME WE CREATE FASHION Congratulations on your achievement in gaining a place on the BA (Hons) Fashion (4 Year) course at UCA Epsom. You will be joining one of the leading fashion courses in the UK, with an international reputation for producing world-class talent. Students from this course have gone on to work for brands such as Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie & Fitch, Burberry, Pringle and Givenchy. The course benefits from numerous facilities, including IT suites, photo studios and a media store which loans photographic equipment and accessories. Specialist features for fashion design include extensive fashion studios, sewing facilities, dedicated technicians, a fabric shop, digital printing, screen printing and laser cutting facilities. The Year 0 programme on the course will provide you with an introduction to a wide range of creative and practical skills to aid you in the development of contemporary design practices used within fashion. This will be delivered through the four core units of study in Year 0, which are Introduction to Creative Practices, Independent Practices 1, Discovering Design, and Independent Practices 2. The course helps you to fulfill your individual potential, not just in practical areas of study, but to make the most of your interpersonal skills, your creativity and intellectual capacity. In order to achieve your personal best, it is important that you commit yourself fully to the course and to UCA. Be assured however, there are well established support systems to help you overcome difficulties you may experience along the way our aim is to help you achieve your best! The BA (Hons) Fashion course at UCA Epsom is an award-winning course with graduates winning national GFW awards and progressing to MA courses, in addition to creative jobs in the fashion industry due to their experimental and creative approach. The work produced is at the higher end comparable with the best courses in the London area. Elinor Renfrew, External Examiners Report 2014 COURSE COSTS The course costs below are only indicative and may vary according to the nature of project briefs and/or in relation to each students project intentions. Where ever possible the course actively seeks to source fabric sponsorship to support student projects, however, this is subject to the generosity of industry partners and availability. SUMMER PROJECT Contemporary Fashion Introduction This summer project will start you on the journey of gaining a deeper understanding of contemporary Fashion Design. You are required to undertake research into fashion to increase your knowledge and understanding of the subject. Choose 5 designers from the lists below, this can be a combination of both menswear and womenswear. Use these websites to gain further understanding: www.showstudio.com www.dazeddigital.com www.anothermag.com www.style.com If you are based in London or can travel to London or another capital city, try to view some of the clothes by the designers you have selected in designer stores. Fashion Drawing For each of your chosen designers select 1 catwalk image and illustrate that outfit, trying to use technique and a range of media to represent the original outfit and the different fabric qualities. (5 illustrations minimum). If you need inspiration, Research www.showstudio.com For each designer/fashion house you have chosen, produce 6 sketchbook pages of research. Make sure the research is not just in relation to the most recent seasons show - your research should go back historically into the brand in order to get an overview. Research should include: has an archive of fashion illustrations which are sketched at catwalks or in relation to catwalk looks. See link below: -Who designs for the selected brand? http://showstudio.com/search/illustration Hand-in Date: Tuesday 15th September -How long the brand has been established -Do they show at Paris, London, Milan or New York? -Try to find out the inspiration for at least one season s collection. -Use the research you are gathering to understand what defines that particular brand s aesthetic. For example, are they a print focused designer, or perhaps a conceptual designer? Do they use vintage clothing as inspiration or use creative pattern cutting techniques to explore proportion? Read show reports, interviews and use your own observations to begin to understand each of the 5 selected brands. -Use images to visually communicate your observations and findings.
