Hair Coloring Theory COS 115 VI. COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course, students learn the techniques of hair coloring and hair lightening. Emphasis is placed on color application, laws, levels and classifications of color and problem solving. Upon completion, the student will should be able to identify all classifications of haircoloring and the effects on the hair. This is a CORE course. VII. EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT 1. Written Evaluations 2. Assignments as assigned by instructor. 3. Library/Internet Assignment: (See attached sheet located on page 9.) Written Evaluations 50% Assignments/Work Ethics 30% Final Exam 20% Total Grade 100% GRADING SCALE: A = Excellent 100-90 C = Average 79-70 B = Good 89-80 F = Failure 69 or Below Notice: The Alabama Board of Cosmetology requires a score of 70 for licensure. A grade of W will be assigned to any student who officially withdraws from the college or a particular course if he or she withdraws by the midpoint of the semester as published in the college calendar. A grade of I will be assigned, at the discretion of the instructor, when all required work for a course is not completed by the end of the semester in which the course is taken. A grade of I must be cleared by the end of the following semester or a grade of F will be assigned. 5

Hair Coloring Theory COS 115 Guidelines for Testing and Grading: IMPORTANT Exams and/or assignments missed due to a student s excused absence will be make-up. The student must notify the instructor in the event of an absence by email. Proper documentation must be dated the day of absence. (Dr. Excuse, court document, etc.) Make-up exams and/or assignments must be taken the day the student return to that scheduled class. Proper documentation must be provided before or on the day the student returns. Make-up exams and /or assignments will be given at the end of the day beginning at 2:30 p.m. No make-up test will be given during regular class time. If the student is tardy/late when the exam is passed out, a make-up exam will be given and a 10 Point deduction will apply to assignment(s). It is the student s responsibility to make sure missed exams and/or assignments are completed in the manner stated above. It is the student s responsibility to read all chapters assigned in the course. Time and date will be given for Final Exam. If the student is not prepared or on time, the Final Exam grade will result in 0. If Final Exam is missed due to prior doctor s recommendation, hospitalization or court referral, a grade of I will be given until exam is taken. Remediation Guidelines: The Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering requires a score of 70 for licensure. The student will be required to remediate on all missed items on a test. REQUIRED THEORY ASSIGNMENTS All required assignments are due upon request of the instructor. If assignments are not turned in by requested time or date, a grade of 0 will be given. All questions and blanks must be answered in theory and practical workbooks. Assignments missed due to a student s absence will be accepted if the absence is excused. 10 point deduction applies. Grading Scale for Assignments Workbook(s) 80% Vocabulary, Review Questions, and Study Guide 20% 6

Hair Coloring Theory COS 115 XII. ATTENDANCE a. Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance should formally withdraw from that class. The student should see their advisor to complete the withdrawal form and the Registrar s Office will process the withdrawal. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid. Withdrawal from class can prohibit progression in the Cosmetology Program. Any student who fails to withdraw or discontinues class attendance will receive a grade of F due to missed evaluations and assignments. b. The Cosmetology and Personal Care Department subscribes to the philosophy that academic success derived by students is directly proportional to their class attendance. There is a high correlation between the number of absences and the final grade. Attendance will be recorded from the first day of the student s official enrollment. A student is considered officially enrolled upon payment of tuition and fees. The instructor is not required to notify the student when the student is in danger of being excessively absent, nor is the instructor required to review any material missed as a result of the student being absent. Students in courses will be reported if they have missed 5 consecutive class meetings for unofficial withdrawal. c. The Cosmetology Program is a clock hour program. Students must complete required clock hours before applying for the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering Licensure Examination. d. Any student who does not attend class during the drop/add period will be considered a no-show. It is the student s responsibility to keep track of the exact number of absences in each class to ensure that any missed assignments are completed in a timely manner. XIII. Topics include consultation, hair analysis, skin test and procedures and applications of all classifications of hair coloring and lightening. Upon completion, the student will be able to perform procedures for hair coloring and hair lightening. This is a CORE course VII. Hair Coloring Lab COS 116 REQUIRED LAB ASSIGNMENTS Each service task for lab courses must be completed as assigned by instructor. If task is not completed, the task will result in a grade of 0. All services for the week are divided by the number of tasks assigned. If the absence is excused, the student will have until the next week to complete services. Upon completion, the student should be able to demonstrate the practical skills necessary to complete successfully the required State Board of Cosmetology examination and entry-level employment. VII. Explain all concepts and procedures pertaining to training in the cosmetology program. EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT Written Evaluations 40% Performance Evaluations 40% Assignments/Work Ethics 20% Total Grade 100% GRADING SCALE: A = Excellent 100-90 B = Good 89-80 C = Average 79-70 F = Failure 69 or Below Notice: The Alabama Board of Cosmetology requires a score of 70 for licensure. A grade of W will be assigned to any student who officially withdraws from the college or a particular course if he or she withdraws by the midpoint of the semester as published in the college calendar. A grade of I will be assigned, at the discretion of the instructor, when all required work for a course is not completed by the end of the semester in which the course is taken. A grade of I must be cleared by the end of the following semester or a grade of F will be assigned. 3

State Board Review COS 167 Guidelines for Testing and Grading: IMPORTANT This course is designed to prepare students for the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering Written and Practical Examination. Due to the extent of this course, it is necessary that students attend ALL class meetings. Please schedule all appointments around this scheduled class. Excused absences will result in 10 point deduction practical examinations. This course is treated in accordance with the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering practices. No student shall be permitted to take the examination if tardy. The grade will result in 0. Only written exams may be made up if the student s absence is excused. Written make-up exams and /or assignments will be given at the end of the day beginning at 2:00 p.m. No make-up test will be given during regular class time. Make-up exams and/or assignments must be made up the day the student returns to that scheduled class. Proper documentation must be provided on or before the day the student returns to the schedule class. The student will be given 90 minutes to take written exams. The student must be prepared for all sections of the practical exam. Unprepared will result in a grade of 0. Doctor s or court documents only will be accepted in event of an absence. Time and date will be given for Final Exam. If the student is not prepared or on time, the Final Exam grade will result in 0. NO EXCEPTIONS!! If Final Exam is missed due to prior doctor s recommendation or hospitalization, a grade of I will be given. It is the student s responsibility to make sure missed exams and or assignments are completed in the manner stated above. Missed Final Exams cannot be made up unless the absence is a doctor s excuse. 4
