Section 6 Labelling

Labelling Requirements Version 2.1 March 2015 S6-2

6.1.1 General Labelling Refer to AS/NZS 2392:1999 Textiles Labelling of clothing, household textiles and furnishings for a guide to preferred label positions. Where a permanent label may be impractical, eg: a reversible item, label information may be provided in other forms. Refer to the standards AS/NZS 2622:1996 Textile products Fibre content labelling and AS/NZS 1957:1998 Textiles Labelling including all Trade Practices Regulations and Consumer Protection Notice updates. 6.1.2 Brand Labelling Refer to specific brand Style Guides for requirements for layout and positioning for each brand. The Style Guides do not over rule mandatory requirements for labelling. Ensure all mandatory requirements are followed when labelling. 6.1.3 Country of Origin Labelling The Country of Origin labelling must be clearly legible. Woolworths preferred letter height is 3mm (Letter height to the shortest letter must not be less than 1.5mm). This information must be easily accessible at point of sale. The Country of Origin labelling must not mislead the consumer in any way. Ensure all Australian Customs requirements are met when labelling. 6.1.4 Children s Nightwear and Limited Daywear Labelling Children s nightwear and limited daywear must meet all requirements in the mandatory standard AS/NZS 1249:2003 Children s nightwear and limited daywear having reduced fire hazard including all Trade Practices Regulations updates and New Zealand Product Safety Standards Regulations updates. The minimum spacing between labels is 5mm with the neck or waist relaxed. The minimum distance of the fire warning label wording and the label seam is 1cm. 6.2.1 Apparel and Accessory Size Labelling All apparel and most accessories require size labelling. Size labelling must be clearly legible and easily accessible at point of sale. Woolworths preferred minimum letter height is 2mm. To Fit body measurements may be required on the size label. Refer to Woolworths Size Labelling Charts for measurements and brand specific Style Guides for layout. 6.2.2 Children s Nightwear and Limited Daywear Labelling The Children s nightwear and limited daywear standard AS/NZS 1249:2003, refers to the standard AS 1182:1997 Size coding scheme for infants and children s clothing Underwear and outerwear, making this a mandatory standard for children s nightwear and limited daywear. 6.3.1 Fibre Content Labelling The Standard AS/NZS 2622:1996 Textile products Fibre content labelling, is mandatory in NSW under the NSW Fair Trading Regulation 2012 and therefore must be followed when labelling product for fibre content. This standard also refers to the Standard AS/NZS 2450:1994 Textiles Natural and man-made fibres Generic names. Please also refer to the New Zealand Consumer Information Standards Regulations update for fibre content, for New Zealand product. Generic fibre names must be used when labelling fibre content, as stated in AS/NZS 2450:1994 Textiles Natural and man-made fibres Generic names. Refer to the following table which contains additional information relating to fibre content labelling. Woolworths minimum letter height, to the shortest letter, when stating fibre content is 2mm. It is preferred that the fibre content is stated in uppercase. Fibre content labelling must be clearly legible and easily accessible at point of sale. Where a permanent label may be impractical, eg: a reversible item, label information may be provided in other forms. Refer to the standard AS/NZS 2622:1996 Textile products Fibre content including the New Zealand Consumer Information Standards Regulations update for fibre content, for New Zealand product. Fibre content labelling must not mislead the consumer in any way. Woolworths prefers not to use percentages when stating fibre content. When multiple fibres are listed, they must be listed in descending order of dominance by mass. Lining, fill, padding and pile shall be stated separately for fibre content. Panels of different fibre contents shall also be stated separately for fibre content. Where a fabric has a coating or is bonded, these layers must be listed separately for fibre content. 6.4.1 Labelling labelling must meet all requirements in the mandatory standard AS/NZS 1957:1998 Textiles Labelling including all Trade Practices Regulations and Consumer Protection Notice updates and New Zealand Consumer Information Standards Regulations update for care labelling, for New Zealand product. The care labelling must be clearly legible and easily accessible at point of sale. Where a permanent label may be impractical, eg: a reversible item, label information may be provided in other forms. Refer to the standard AS/NZS 1957:1998 Textiles Labelling including all Trade Practices Regulations and Consumer Protection Notice updates and New Zealand Consumer Information Standards Regulations update for care labelling, for New Zealand product. instructions must be attached to each separate piece or component of a set regardless whether the same care instructions apply. The care instructions chosen must be appropriate and adequate for the care of the item so it is not damaged when the consumer follows these instructions. instructions should not be over cautious eg: Dryclean Only on washable items. instructions shall be listed in the sequence of washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and drycleaning. If the item has a removable accessory that cannot be washed, the first line before the care instructions are given, must state: o Remove (item eg: belt) before wash Woolworths require that all washable items include a statement as the first line on the care instructions: o Wash before wear; or o Wash before use Woolworths recommends that Do not dryclean be used on the care instructions for children s apparel up to and including size 7, children s nightwear, swimwear for all ages, underwear for all ages, maternity feeding apparel, all items intended to be used on crockery and cutlery, bathroom manchester, nursery home textiles.
