7 GENERAL LAUNDRY INSTRUCTIONS In order to prolong the life of and to prevent unexplained marks on, stretching/shrinking of your garments endeavour to follow these suggestions. We suggest that you read the labels on your washing powders, fabric softeners and bleaching agents and inform yourself as to the chemical content and the effect that it has on fabrics. These chemicals can and do have an adverse effect on the composition of the fabric fibre. We suggest that you be selective in your choice of washing powder and to use only the recommended dosage. If possible do not use fabric softeners and bleaching agents or keep your usage to a minimum. BATHING COSTUMES AND SILICONE SWIM CAPS The Chlorine in swimming pools is harmful to any bathing cap and/or bathing costume whether administered manually or by a salt chlorinator. In order to prolong the life of a bathing costume and prevent it from stretching and/or becoming brittle: 1. Rinse the costume in fresh water immediately after use and leave it to dry inside out in a shady area. 2. Do not wash a costume in hot soapy water or iron it. 3. Exit the pool from the steps and do not hoist yourself over the edge of the pool, as the pool edging will damage the fabric of any costume. 4. All bathing caps carry a care instruction insert when purchased from the shop. 5. Rinse the cap in fresh water and wipe dry after use. 6. Do not leave the cap in a tog bag or in a damp environment. 7. An occasional wash in warm soapy water will remove any scale that might adhere to the cap. 8. Lengthy periods of exposure to direct sunlight will shorten the cap life. 9. All caution should be taken to prevent contact with any sharp object e.g. hairpins and fingernails. BE ADVISED THAT: 1. All dark colours will fade. The degree of fading depends on how often the garment is washed. 2. Toothpaste, hair gels and sprays, perfume, deodorants, sun-tanning lotions/blocks do bleach and stain fabrics (especially collars). Apply any of the above and allow them to dry before they are exposed to any garment. 3. Our school blazers can be washed (do not spin) and left to dry on a hanger. (Do not iron.) 4. We recommend that you dry clean braided blazers as the braiding does shrink. LAUNDRY AREA: 1. Regularly wipe your washing line and clean your iron to remove dirt and grime. 2. Be aware of vegetation overhanging your washing line that may drop sap or coloured foliage onto your wet washing and cause stains. 3. Always wipe any counter tops or surfaces to remove any spills of washing powder, fabric softener or bleaching agent before you place your laundry on them. Spillage of these agents can also damage the enamel of your washing machine if they are not cleared and can result in rust appearing on your appliances. WASHING PROCEDURE: 1. Read all laundry labels attached to your garments and follow the instructions of the manufacturer i.e. water temperature etc. 2. Sort your washing into piles of light and dark.

8 3. Ensure that all fastening mechanisms are in the closed position before you place your laundry into your washing machine. Velcro, open zips, metal buttons, hooks and belts damage fabrics during the wash and spin cycle. 4. Empty all pockets and be aware that tissues, sweet wrappings etc can discolour fabrics. 5. Always wash and dry all garments inside out. 6. Add the recommended dose of washing powder (and any other laundry agents) and allow it to dissolve in the water of your washing machine before you place the laundry into the machine. Do not pour washing powder directly onto your washing. Excess washing powder will make the fabric hard and scratchy and will result in bleach marks on your garments. DRYING PROCEDURE: 1. Tumble dry at your own risk. 2. Do not use faulty pegs as they can damage the fabric. 3. Gently shake the garment and align it in its manufactured position i.e. flatten the seams and align the hems. This will alleviate unnecessary ironing. 4. It is best to allow stretch fabrics to dry flat if possible. 5. Do not stretch the garment on the washing line. 6. Place the garment halfway over the washing line so that there is an even amount of weight (of the fabric) on either side. Do not peg any stretch fabric garment by the hem. This will result in uneven stretched hemlines and seams. 7. Place the pegs carefully on the garment to prevent peg marks. 8. Do not leave garments to dry in hot sunlight or very windy conditions for lengthy periods. This will result in the fabric becoming hard and scratchy. Pegs can damage garments in very windy conditions. 9. Remove the garments from the washing line as soon as they are dry and smooth them into shape. This will prevent unnecessary ironing. IRONING: 1. Read the instruction manual of your iron and ensure that you use it correctly. 2. Read the laundry label and follow the instructions of the manufacturer. 3. Do not iron: School blazers, tracksuits, physical education shorts and bathing costumes. 4. Do not iron over any printed artwork or embroidery of any garment. 5. Do not apply excessive pressure to the iron. A gentle pressure is recommended. Failing to do so will result in shiny marks on and stretching of your garments.
