EDITOR S NOTES Are you struggling with hair dryness? Natural hair is really beautiful but sometimes it can be difficult to keep moisturized. This is mainly because its tight curl pattern tends to hinder natural oils from finding its way from your scalp to the tip of your hair. However, there are a few simple things that you can do to keep your hair soft as well as prevent it from drying out. wash your hair every week Water is the no.1 moisturizer and it can help keep your hair hydrated. The water molecules penetrate your hair shaft making it not only softer but also more elastic. Hence, well moisturized hair is less likely to break. When washing your hair, be sure to rinse with warm water. This helps dislodge dirt and oil, while opening up the cuticles to allow easy absorption of your shampoo and conditioner. minimize heat styling Tools such as blow dryers, hot combs and curling irons can cause hair dryness. In general, excessive heat is damaging, and these tools emit a good amount of it. To prevent your hair from drying out, cut back on using these tools to just once a week. Go for air drying instead. select your shampoo and conditioner wisely Another tip to prevent dryness is to use a shampoo & conditioner that complement each other in terms of Potential of Hydrogen (PH). Conditioner is typically more acidic than shampoo. Why? The low ph of this product (which is often used last in the cleansing process) helps seal your hair while smoothing down the cuticles which helps to hold in the moisture. So before deciding on a shampoo and conditioner, try to check the PH levels to ensure they actually complement each other. deep condition regularly Deep conditioning, if done regularly, can help restore the moisture levels you need. If your hair is excessively dry, deep condition at least once a week. And you don t need a hood dryer for conditioning! Simply slather on a good deep conditioner, wear a shower cap and leave it for a few hours.

WHAT? WHY? HOW?... THE BIG CHOP (BC) FOR TRANSITIONERS By Jocelyn Renee I don t know about you, but I hear a lot of talk from transitioners (and opposers) about The Big Chop! Many transitioners wonder what s the point?, what does it mean?, what if I don t like it? these are all great questions, so let me offer you some words of encouragement & advice. For starters, what is a BIG CHOP or BC? A natural hair BC is when you cut off all the relaxed ends of your hair at one time. Some people transition before their BC in which they let their hair grow out for a while (several months year), and this is where the questions arise. Q: What s the point? Why can t I just transition until my natural hair is the same length that I have right now? A: There are several reasons why doing a BC is good: From experience, I can tell you, that the texture that grows out with relaxed ends is nothing like the texture when its completely natural. You get to learn about your hair as it grows; this is REALLY fun and beneficial when your hair is longer ** You are able do a lot of product experimenting to find the best products for your hair. ** During the transition period, there is a major break point where the two textures meet, and without a lot of TLC you can cause your hair a lot of stress which will lead to breakage and split ends. ** You re less likely to give in to the relaxer-addiction and put a relaxer in your hair. Honestly, the transitioning phase can be trying at times, and you may feel like you just want to put a relaxer in, but resist! Think about how much good you will be doing to your hair, mind, and body by not chemically altering your curls! In the end, you will be glad you stayed strong because your natural hair will be fun, free, beautiful, and sincerely yours!
DEALING WITH BAD HAIR DAYS Avoiding and dealing with bad hair days can take a toll on your overall mood. Especially if you don t have a clue as to what to do when your hair refuses to lay right. The thing is, bad hair days are a reality, and people have them frequently. Knowing how to fix your hair s bad timing is crucial if you don t want to spend your whole day in a cranky mood. Here are a few tricks you can use to get past that bad hair day successfully. HOW TO DEAL WITH IT If you are in a hurry and don t have time to start working on that hair, you could opt to wear it under a wig, in a ponytail or accessorize it up. If all else fails a scarf or head wrap is a good backup tool to have when nothing else seems to work. Before it comes down to dealing with a HOW NOT TO DEAL WITH IT bad hair day, there are things you can do to avoid it. Get a trim regularly. Trimmed ends are less likely to get tangled and look unkempt. It is also easier to maintain and manipulate into a desired style. When washing your hair, clean scalp of excess oil and dead cells. Massaging your scalp also helps to increase blood circulation which will help hair to grow. Detangle your hair completely preferable when wet. Keep hair moisturized and use gels, butters or crèmes to help with styling. Experiment with different hair styles to find the ones that work best for you. This way you will have a quick go to style ready whenever your hair starts acting up.
