Fashion Design: Strand 5 Personal Fashion Characteristics

Standards Students will evaluate personal fashion characteristics. Standard 1: Aspects of personal appearance Standard 2: Identify and analyze wardrobe needs for personal lifestyle Standard 3: Identify related careers

The fashionable woman wears clothes, the clothes don t wear her. Mary Quant

The Best Clothes for You Are clothes that: Help you project a positive image Allow you to express your personality Allow you to make good first impressions By discovering what clothes are best for you, you will: Be able to organize a well planned wardrobe Be a smarter consumer

The Image You Project Image: What people see when they look at you and remember about you later To look fabulous you don t have to be the most beautiful or handsome. What you need is: Personal grooming Clothes that fit and flatter

Good Grooming Includes: Having clean Hair Nails Teeth Body Maintaining good health and proper weight through: Healthy eating Exercise Plenty of rest Posture (Stand tall and straight) Facial expressions (Smile! )

Fit and Flatter To give the best image your clothes should: Fit nicely Not too tight or too loose Be the right length Play up your assets Neat, clean and in good repair

You are what you wear! Did you ever think how much your clothes say about you? The clothes you wear and the way you wear them tell others about you through visual messages The best clothes for you are those that send the right message

Clothing Communication Examples: Color: can express mood Happy- bright or cheerful Sad- dark or dull Appearance: can express self-image Dirty or ripped- don t care about self Clean and neat- value my appearance Like your peers: can express conformity Unlike your peers: can express individuality

Personality Is your total characteristics that distinguish you as an individual, especially your emotional and behavioral tendencies. You can express your personality through your clothes. The way you dress is a projection of how you see yourself and how you want others to see you.

Yin vs. Yang Yin and Yang traits combine personality and physical characteristics. They are described in ancient Chinese Cosmology. Cosmology deals with the order of the universe. Chinese philosophers used yin and yang to describe the opposite, but equally important forces that exist in the world.

Yin Represents the passive, timid, and delicate elements of personality Dominantly yin people are submissive, mild, and fragile Physical traits: Feminine Short including small bone structure Graceful Delicate coloring Soft, gentle speech. Yin in clothing: Delicate, curved lines, rounded shapes, smaller scale, bows and ruffles

Yang Represents the active, rugged elements of personality Dominantly yang people are forceful, aggressive, and strong Physical traits: Masculine and large Strong, prominent features Yang in clothing: Sturdy, straight lines, angular shapes, larger scale, button and pleats

Choosing the Right apparel for you The right clothes for you depends on several factors: Your lifestyle Your climate Your community standards

Your Lifestyle Is made up of all of the activities you do and the places you go. It includes your activities at: School Work Social Leisure

Your Climate Different climates create different clothing needs: Cool weather: Dress in layers Choose fuzzy, bulky, wool-like fabrics Wear snug fitting clothing Warm weather: Choose cottony fabrics Wear loosing fitting clothing Go sleeveless or collarless

Your Community Standards Influence the appropriateness of clothing Vary from city to city Small towns tend to be more conservative than big cities What is considered acceptable dress by your school? Friends? Employer?

The Benefits of a Well-planned Wardrobe 1. You can project your best self-image You look and feel your best Your clothing fits your body shape, coloring, personality and lifestyle You have the clothes you need, they fit well and are stylish 2. You can save money By planning a small well-chosen wardrobe Your goal should be to look your best with a minimum expenditure By allowing for continuous change, replacing a few items at a time 3. You can gain flexibility Planning and having mix-and-match garments makes sense Choose one color scheme, then your garments will automatically coordinate when they are mixed and matched Bring in brighter or different colors with your accessories

Wardrobe Terms Basic apparel: Garments that are worn most often and are the core of a person s wardrobe Classic, well constructed Trendy apparel: Current style and patterns, colorful, fun, mix and match

Wardrobe Terms Extenders: Accessories that can be mixed and matched with the basic apparel of a wardrobe to multiply the number of outfits Wardrobe plan: A blueprint of action to be taken to update or complete a person s wardrobe in the best way

Choosing Accessories Accessories are the items you wear with your garments to create a complete outfit. Often the little details make the difference between mediocre and marvelous Types of accessories are: Footwear Handbags Headwear Scarves Neckties Handkerchiefs Jewelry Eyewear Belts Hosiery

Careers Fashion Stylist someone who selects the clothing for published editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, concert performances, and any public appearances made by celebrities, models or other public figures. Personal Shopper an individual who is paid to help another to purchase goods, either by accompanying them while shopping or by shopping on their behalf.
