This implies passing on craftsmanship expertise from one generation to the next. It is thus crucial to ensure its survival by investing in human resources as well as in production facilities. This approach is our strength and the expression of our long-term vision, even though it goes against the tide of a certain tendency to seek immediate profit. the first Traditional Chinese Calendar wristwatch, a 5Hz Flyback Chronograph or the Tourbillon Carrousel, every component of our movements, even if hidden, is handdecorated by our artist engravers employing traditional skills. Thus, each of our new models makes reference to the past as much as to the future, to tradition as much as to innovation. Perpetuating the watchmaking tradition also implies thorough knowledge of our origins and strengthening our roots, as well as innovation. Because innovation is another watchmaking tradition, as demonstrated by the countless complications invented over the years by men and women driven by creative curiosity. Today, our sector is going through a fascinating period that is fundamentally transforming the construction, the functions and the reliability of timepieces. BLANCPAIN S COMMITMENT TO THE UNDERWATER WORLD For more than 60 years, Blancpain s history has been closely bound up with the world of diving. It all began in 1953 when the Manufacture developed the first modern diver s watch: the Fifty Fathoms. Like all great successes, the Fifty Fathoms stemmed from a passion that of Jean- Jacques Fiechter, the Blancpain CEO at the time, and his collaboration with Captain Robert Bob Maloubier, co-founder of the French military s frogman commando unit. These historical ties are now expressed by a determination to protect and to promote wider knowledge of the fascinating underwater world, by providing substantial financial support for a number of years already to major scientific expeditions such as the Pristine Seas Expeditions, run by National Geographic and directed by Dr Enric Sala, the Gombessa Project led by Laurent Ballesta, and not forgetting freediver Gianluca Genoni, the World Ocean Summit organized by The Economist, the Hans Hass Fifty Fathoms Award, as well as renowned underwater photographers. Blancpain now takes its commitment to the underwater world into a new dimension by uniting all its activities under the Blancpain Ocean Commitment banner. Throughout its history, Blancpain has distinguished itself by its capacity to develop exceptional movements that have made their mark on successive eras. It is this precious heritage that has contributed to reviving the major horological complications in the 1980s and which remains the main source of inspiration for the watchmakers and artisans of the Manufacture. At the start of the 21st century, substantial investments were made and Blancpain set out on a quest for renewal and excellence. Securing complete control over the production process has given it total freedom in creating movements, as ever in harmony with the brand s aesthetic codes. The number of world firsts and patents has increased dramatically with an impressive parade of new movements. In-house development and production of a large proportion of parts and tools; ongoing training for specialists and artisans; manual assembly of each movement by a single watchmaker; refined and entirely hand-crafted finishing right the way through to the tiniest hidden details: the strength of the Manufacture lies in its ability to create timepieces that are both innovative and respectful of the noble Swiss watchmaking tradition. 15 Over the past nine years, the Manufacture in Le Brassus has displayed a remarkably creative spirit in launching 33 new watch calibres that now equip the finest creations in its collections. UNDER-LUG CORRECTORS Every mechanical calendar movement requires correctors. They are the means by which the calendar can be initially set when the watch is delivered and can be reset if the watch is ever allowed to run down. Two hundred years of watchmaking practice have placed the correctors on the side of the case. When pushed with a tool usually a push pin is supplied with the watch the corrector itself pushes upon a lever which is part of the calendar plate of the movement, changing an indication date, day, month or moon phase to the next day or month. Albeit convenient, correctors detract from the clean, smooth lines of the side of the watch, appearing as small dimples. One of Blancpain s watchmakers, thinking out of the box, gazed upon one of its perpetual calendars and had an inspiration. What if the correctors could be moved elsewhere, to a place where they would not be visible when the watch is worn? The inspiration was to place the correctors under the lugs. In this location, the correctors are at once easily accessible for advancing the calendar indications, perfectly placed for the movement, yet entirely hidden from view when the watch is worn. Blancpain brought an added bonus with this industry-first solution. The correctors were designed so that they can be actuated with a fingernail. Although a tool is supplied, unlike case-side dimple correctors, its use is not essential. Watch collectors have waited two hundred years for clean lines on the side of the case and complete freedom from tools. A patent has naturally been filed for this innovation. VILLERET COLLECTION 41 Of course the solution could not be to simply remove the correctors. The need to set directly the perpetual calendar remained. RUNNING EQUATION OF TIME Equation of time displays in wristwatches have always been extraordinarily rare and, following the tradition developed over two centuries with pocket watches and clocks, they have been incorporated in only the most refined of timepieces. However, working in the small dimensions of a wristwatch, the equation complication has, until now, only been of the more simplified plus/minus scale variety. February 12 ~ +14 min VILLERET COLLECTION 56 In 2004, Blancpain debuted a revolutionary equation of time watch, the Equation du Temps Marchante. Blancpain s watchmakers undertook to bring to wristwatches, for the first time, the rare and difficult running equation complication that had existed only in large clocks and pocket watches. To do this they had to design an innovative gear train, with an ingenious differential that combines the running of the equation gear train controlled by a complex-shaped cam and the running train of the watch s civil minutes-hand, to drive the running equation hand. In addition, Calibre 3863 provides a plus/minus scale equation display. As befits this world s first wristwatch, Blancpain combined these two separate equation displays with an innovative retrograde moon phase indication and a complete perpetual calendar. The decoration of the movement celebrates this achievement with a special hand carving of the bridges and a meticulously hand-fashioned winding rotor bearing an artist s image of the sun. MINUTE REPEATER WITH AUTOMATA Automata, or moving figure watches have had a checkered past. The techniques for creating them evolved near the end of the 17th century. The subjects for the moving figures were frequently erotic scenes. Their allure was instantly recognized. Watchmakers responded with ingenious fantasies to tempt those with the means to acquire these most rare and expensive creations. This did not long go unnoticed by the Church. Religious authorities in the Swiss cantons of Geneva and Neuchâtel formed an alliance to strike out against this free libertine expression. Not only was further production of the watches banned, but those in existence were made subject to seizure. The fate of confiscated watches was both predictable and grim: destruction. What were already rare pieces for reasons of cost became even rarer. Blancpain brought back this most celebrated albeit clandestine complication with the introduction of its Calibre 332 in 1993. This set a milestone for wristwatches: the world s first minute repeater with automata. Both erotic and non-erotic figures are combined with Blancpain s famed minute repeater movements. Combining moving figures with the delicate repeater mechanism is a watchmaking tour de force and when all of this is done in the scale of a wristwatch, as opposed to a clock or large pocket watch, it is doubly difficult. In Blancpain s case, the figures were mated with the world s smallest repeater mechanism, which made the challenge even greater for its craftsmen.

PATENTED DIAL GEM-SETTING TECHNIQUE LÉMAN COLLECTION 98 There has always been a peculiar allure to gem-set watch dials. Their radiance and luminosity have placed them on a unique pedestal in watch design. Dial designers, however, have heretofore been constricted in their jewelled dial creations. To be properly anchored, jewels have been traditionally placed with their upper part on the dial surface and secured by a claw setting on the dial. Classic claw setting provides a robust result, but does not allow a full range of artistic freedom in its results. In the world-first Léman Tourbillon Large Date Diamonds which debuted in 2006, Blancpain revealed its secret for liberating dial designers from the restrictions of the past. Blancpain s craftsmen discovered an ingenious, and now patented, solution for bringing together jewels and a dial, termed rail setting. Instead of placing the jewels on the top surface of the dial and holding them in place via claws, with rail setting the jewels are placed in a trough, entered from the back side of the dial and anchored in place by grains positioned beneath the dial and therefore out of sight. dial The effect is mesmerizing. Rather than appearing as a separate add on to the dial, the rail-effect jewels blend seamlessly into the dial, shimmering in their settings even with the top surface of the dial.
