DESCRIPTION The Tactical Communications Helmet (TCH), shown in Fig ure 1, is a close-fit ting helmet providing ballistic and bump protection, communications, ventilation, com fort, and a se cure fit. The speaker-equipped earcups, mi cro phone as sem bly, and in ner hel met will re main in po si tion when prop erly ad justed. In ad di tion, the helmet features the following: Snug-fitting inner helmet: ventilated for comfort, machine-washable to maintain hygienic cleanliness Minimum weight Mi cro phone can be worn on ei ther right or left side Hel met can be worn with one or both earcups Easy-to-remove communications assembly (no tools needed), with a choice of up per cords with or with out a push-to-talk (PTT) switch Quick don ning, doff ing, and ad just ment Easy-to-replace components Sound attenuation Ballistic helmet shell with protection V 50 of 1400 feet per sec ond when tested in ac cor dance with MIL-STD-662 (Op tional hel met shell with protection V 50 or 2150 feet per sec ond also avail able)* Bump protection* Earcups with ballistic fragmentation protection V 50 of 800 feet per sec ond when tested in ac cor dance with MIL-STD 662 * This fea ture only pro vided when the shell is used with the in ner hel met. HEL MET FIT TING Hel met fit ting con sists of (1) size se lec tion, (2) ad just ment of com po nents as needed to fit the wearer s head, and (3) at tach ment/adjustment of the hel met shell. Size Selection (Fig ure 2) Size se lec tion is based on the wearer s hat size OR head cir cum fer ence. To de ter mine head cir cum fer ence, wrap a mea sur ing tape around the wearer s head ap prox i mately ½ inch above the ears and note the mea sure ment. Sizing pa ram e ters are shown be low. NOTE If the op tional ab sor bent liner (pro vided with each hel met) is to be worn, add 1/8 inch to the head cir cum fer ence measurement. Ad just ment of Com po nents (Fig ures 3, 4, 5, and 6) WARNING Proper strap ad just ment is cru cial for hel met sta bil ity and sound attenuation. You must en sure that the chin strap, nape strap, and both top adjustment straps are cor rectly ad justed at all times when the TCH is worn. 1. Re move the hel met shell; don the in ner hel met. 2. Slide the buck les on the earcup adjustment straps (Fig ure 3) as nec es sary so that the earcups are cen tered over your ears. NOTE If you have dif fi culty centering both earcups over your ears af ter you have ad justed the earcup adjustment straps, remove the in ner hel met and reposition the earcups within the in ner hel met pock ets, shown in Fig ure 3. (The earcups are at tached in side the pock ets with hook and pile fas ten ers.) Don the in ner hel met again and check earcup cen ter ing. Con tinue in this man ner un til you are sat is fied with the po si tion of both earcups. 3. Ad just and fas ten the nape strap (Fig ure 4) for a snug, se cure fit at the nape. 4. At tach the chin strap side-release buckle (Fig ure 4). Ad just the chin strap for a snug se cure fit, and slide the chin pad un til it is cen tered un der your chin. Fig ure 3. 5. Check the earseal compression against the ears. For op ti mum sound attenuation, the earseals should be evenly com pressed as much as pos si ble without causing dis - com fort. If needed, re move the in ner helmet, remove the earcups from the inner helmet pockets, and at tach earcup spacer pads (Fig ure 5) to the backs of the earcups. Reinstall the earcups inside the inner helmet pockets. Don the in ner hel met and re check the earseal compression. Con tinue in this manner until earseal compression is sat is fac tory. SPACER PAD EARCUP SPACER PADS NOTE Spacer pads may be in stalled whole or cut into any shape needed to bal ance earcup compression. 6. Referring to Fig ure 6, loosen the ad just ment nut on the swivel. Ad just the boom and microphone to the proper position, and re-tighten the nut. NOTE If the mi cro phone can not be prop erly positioned in front of the lips, it may be necessary to slightly bend the wire por tion of the boom near the swivel. Be care ful not to break the wire. At tach ment of Hel met Shell (Fig ure 7) 1. Un fas ten the chin strap; have the crewmember re move the in ner hel met. 2. Referring to Fig ure 7, at tach the hel met shell to the in ner hel met as fol lows: a. Place the in ner hel met in side the hel met shell. En sure that the hook fas tener on the in ner hel met is firmly at tached to the pile fas tener on the in side of the hel met shell. b. At tach the front tabs on the hel met shell to the front snaps on the in ner helmet. c. At tach the rear tab on the in ner hel met to the rear snap on the hel met shell. 3. Have the crewmember don the hel met and fas ten the chin strap; re ad just the chin strap as nec es sary. 4. Ad just the slide buck les on the front and rear tabs as needed. Don the helmet; tighten the nape strap and the chin strap. En sure that the nape strap is not pulled away from the crewmember s nape. Readjust the nape strap and the rear tab as nec es sary to en sure a snug fit and ef fec tive re ten tion. HELMET OPERATION 1. Move the mi cro phone aside; grasp the hel met be low each earcup. 2. Spread the earcups slightly and pull the hel met down onto the head. 3. Press the top of the hel met down to seat the hel met prop erly. 4. Ad just the nape strap and the earcups as re quired. Fas ten the chin strap and ad just it for snug fit. 5. Po si tion the mi cro phone as de sired by flex ing the boom. 6. Con nect the up per cord to the lower cord as shown in the in set in Fig ure 8. 7. Con nect the lower cord to the in ter com sys tem. 8. If the up per cord has a PTT switch, operate the switch as fol lows: a. For the ra dio, push the switch to the mo men tary po si tion. b. For the in ter com, push the switch to the locked po si tion. c. To lis ten only, push the switch to the cen ter po si tion. NOTE The user can re move one earcup if needed for am bi ent hear ing. Re tain the earcup for fu ture use. 9. To re move one earcup, do the fol low ing: a. Referring to Fig ure 8, dis con nect the ear phone cord con nec tor. b. Re move the earcup that is not con nected to the mi cro phone boom. c. Don the in ner hel met and check the fit. Re ad just the in ner hel met straps as necessary. 10. To switch the mi cro phone to the other side of the hel met, do the fol low ing: a. Re move both earcups from the in ner hel met pock ets. b. Per form Steps 2b through 2e on Page 8. c. From in side the in ner hel met, push the mi cro phone through the open ing on the op po site side of the hel met, and in sert the mi cro phone-side earcup into the in ner hel met pocket. d. Perform Steps 4b through 4f on Page 8. e. Don the in ner hel met and check the fit. Re ad just the in ner hel met straps as necessary. 6

CLEAN ING IN NER HEL MET 1. Un snap the hel met shell from the in ner hel met. 2. Referring to Fig ure 9, remove the communications assembly from the inner hel met as fol lows: a. Re move the right earcup (as worn) from the in ner hel met pocket. b. Open the in side rear bot tom flap, and with draw the com mu ni ca tions cord from the en clo sure. c. Un fas ten the re tainer snap that at ta ches the com mu ni ca tions cord to the back of the in ner hel met. d. Un plug the mi cro phone from the con nec tor. e. Loosen the mi cro phone swivel as sem bly. Slide the boom for ward un til the rear of the boom con tacts the swivel, and re-tighten the swivel. Push the boom/mi cro phone into the in ner hel met open ing as shown, and re move the left earcup (as worn) from the in ner hel met pocket. CAU TION Do not wash the in ner helmet in hot wa ter; shrink age and puck er ing will oc cur if you do. Use luke warm or cold wa ter only. 3. Ma chine-wash the in ner hel met in luke warm or cold wa ter with mild de ter gent (no bleach). Al low to air-dry. 4. Reinstall the communications assembly as follows: a. From in side the in ner hel met, push the boom/mi cro phone through the open ing from which it was re moved, and re in sert the left earcup into the inner helmet pocket. b. Loosen the knurled nut of the boom swivel as much as pos si ble, en sur ing that the boom sup port wires are aligned within the grooves of the boom swivel. Slide the lock ing plate into the boom clip un til you hear a click. Tighten the knurled nut to se cure the boom sup port in the de sired position. c. Plug the mi cro phone and head band cord, if re moved, into the con nec tor from which they were re moved, and re seal the rub ber boots. d. Fas ten the com mu ni ca tions cord re tainer snap to the in ner hel met. e. Route the com mu ni ca tions cord along the in side bot tom of edge, and close the flap over the cord. f. Re in sert the right earcup and spacer pads into the in ner hel met pocket. 5. Don the in ner hel met and check the fit. Ad just as nec es sary. 8
