The Shang Dynasty

The Shang Dynasty The Shang Dynasty is one of the earliest dynasties in China This dynasty was centered in the Huang He (Yellow River) Valley and ruled from 1700-1122 B.C. For many years, it was thought that the Shang Dynasty was only a legend It was not until the late 1800 s and early 1900 s that the artifacts from the Shang Dynasty were uncovered to prove it existed

The Shang Capital The capital city was Anyang. In the city were palaces, temples, and houses Artisans also created objects of metal, pottery, and from jade in workshops Human bones beneath certain buildings suggest the Shang performed human sacrifice in rituals Shang burials also included human sacrifices. If the King was buried, then servants, slaves, and animals would be buried with him. Food and other treasures (weapons, jade ornaments, pottery, and chariots) were also buried with him.

Shang Government Shang government was led by a powerful King The King was almost always at war trying to (your answer here)?? Shang Kings depended on their armies to expand the kingdom Prisoners of war were used as laborers and in human sacrifices Armies were powerful because they had bronze weapons. (mixture or copper and tin) Armies consisted of large numbers of foot soldiers, archers, men on horseback/elephants, and men in chariots.

Shang Social Classes Nobles were below the King and his family in line. They fought in the King s armies and supplied the army with weapons, and chariots, etc. They lived a life of luxury in palaces and spent time hunting. Artisans were next. They were a small class of talented people. They included potters, stonemasons, and workers crafting items of bronze and jade. They were lower than nobles but especially valued if they could work in bronze Traders were below them: Belief is that they traded extensively. The Shang used cowrie shells (sea shells) as money and they traded with neighboring regions to get them Farmers made up the largest class and they grew millet, wheat, barley rice, fruit, vegetables and nuts. Also raised cattle, pigs, and chickens. They did not own the land they farmed it belonged to a noble. They had to give certain amounts of what they grew to the noble and then he sent some on to the King (does this sound familiar??) Slaves were the bottom of the classes: Usually prisoners of war who built palaces and tombs. Also might be sacrificed when their master died as they could continue to serve him in the afterlife.

Shang Religion Focused on ancestor worship Did believe in afterlife Believed that dead ancestors had the power to help or harm the living Special belief that King inherited his right to rule from his ancestors They often used oracle bones to determine what to do. Belief was that they could communicate with the dead. Carve messages onto bones, hot rods inserted, and then the oracle would read the message

Shang Writing Earliest writing was inscriptions on oracle bones Shang writing used characters to stand for words rather than sounds Early chinese writing used pictographs (images to stand for objects) Shang used logographs (characters that stand for words)

Shang Art and Technology Artists had great skill in working with bronze Used geometric designs and pictures of mythical creatures Shang also worked in jade ( a very hard stone--green) They believed that the qualities of jade represented the qualities of a superior person. Hardness represented wisdom Smooth and Shiny represented kindness Technology--the Shang were skilled in bronze and they used it to make the tools of war--arrowheads, spearheads, ax heads, and helmets.
