03 A wor from the curator 1- At the intersection of art an activism, the Guerrilla Girls are an outstaning voice of the latest stage of the feminist art movement. This movement has concerne itself with upsetting fictions like the artistic genius an masterpiece, which sustain a concept of art that presents itself as inepenent of its historical an social context. Although forge in the XIX century, this concept continues in force toay. The Guerrilla Girls artist collective starte its activities in the mi-1980s in opposition to the renewe interest in these fictions that came with the rise of Neo-liberalism. The Members of the group hie their faces behin gorilla masks an aopt the names of iconic ea women artists. Remaining anonymous, they focus on the political imension of art an enounce the way women are systematically overlooke in contemporary society. The work of the Guerrilla Girls, who ientify themselves as the conscience of the art worl, marks a turning point in feminist artistic practices for two reasons: Firstly, their approach to the issues of prouction an reprouction of sexual ifference in art is a iscursive turn from previous strategies of feminist art. For the first time Guerrilla Girls offer an overview of the ifferent levels an processes that consoliate sexism in art without ignoring the connections between these processes an other institutions an social spheres. The Guerrilla Girls iconic posters are immeiately recognizable because they use the language of statistics to reflect women s position in the fiel of art an other areas an they highlight the ramatic failure of emocratic societies to keep their promise to achieve equality between the sexes. These posters also form the basis of the collective's activities, which range from placing them in public spaces, such as on the oors of art galleries in New York, to a variety of actions in museums an other cultural an social institutions. Seconly, the group s popularity in the late 1980s marke the en of the first major stage of feminist art, which ha been launche on either sie of the Atlantic on the back of the feminist movement of the late 1960s. The Guerrilla Girls posters, publications an activities acknowlege this heritage; they are constructe from it an they invoke feminist knowlege as the necessary conceptual framework for an acute reaing. Above all, the Guerrilla Girls' work is a reminer that the political aims of the feminist movement of the late 1960s have yet to be achieve an it spurs us on to continue the fight.
