A tan is a natural defence reaction: under the influence of UVA and UVB rays the melanocytes begin to synthesize a greater quantity of melanin. The tan this produces thus acts as a protection capable of absorbing up to 90% of UVB rays, but, even so, it is not sufficient for protecting you against the damaging effects of the sun. The tan does not stop UVA rays. Yet these are just as dangerous as UVB rays; both are responsible, in the long term, for skin cancer. Furthermore, this protection mechanism only comes into play after several days of exposure to the sun. I HOW DO SUN CREAMS WORK? Sun creams contain protective filters in the form of molecules which absorb certain rays. There is no filter to cover the entire spectrum of rays. This is why several filters are generally combined together. 2 types of filters can be found in sun creams: > Organic filters : chemical molecules that are generally of synthetic origin and which absorb part of the sun s rays. > Mineral filters are mineral powders (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, etc) that are very finely ground and which reflect part of the sun s rays. They are less allergising than organic filters but require much more careful and regular application. I WHAT DO SUN PROTECTION FACTORS SIGNIFY? The SPF is the relationship between the dose of radiation required to provoke sunburn on unprotected skin and that required for provoking the same sunburn on skin protected by the sun care product. For example, with a SPF of 15 it will take you 15 times longer to get sunburnt. But use caution: the quantity of solar radiation varies considerably according to the time of day and the place you happen to be in.
