Introduction Regimental Dress Regulations 1. This manual has been promulgated to detail the various Orders of Dress worn by members of The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary s). It is solely intended to augment and to furnish detail to those dress instructions published in A-AD-265-000/AG- 001, Canadian Forces Dress Instructions in matters of Regimental custom and traditional Highland and Scottish dress as authorized by NDHQ. 2. All infantry personnel shall be issued and wear Regimental uniforms and accouterments, as detailed in this regulation upon successful completion of basic infantry training. Attached other trades personnel may request permission to wear the Regimental uniform. This does not apply to those persons who are attached or posted in from other units. 3. In keeping with Canadian Forces Dress Instructions, Regimental Orders of Dress are separated into those si categories common to all elements of the Canadian Forces. Band orders of dress will follow the CF numbering system but with additional accoutrements that will not be dealt with in detail in this manual. a. No. 1 Ceremonial Dress a formal order of dress worn with orders, Decorations and medals, and other ceremonial accouterments and accessories. b. No. 2 Mess Dress a formal evening dress uniform worn at military and appropriate civilian social functions. c. No. 3 Service Dress a dress uniform which meets the Canadian Forces public image standards, is appropriate for wear unrestricted in public. d. No. 4 Not Applicable e. No. 5 Operational Dress functional uniform such as combat clothing, flying clothing and Naval Combat dress. Used for training and operations. f. No. 6 Not Applicable 4. The responsibility for and care and maintenance of the items of kit issued to individuals can not be over emphasized. Considering that the price of a kilt is about $800.00 at the time these instructions were issued and the combined cost of all items issued to an individual may eceed $1500.00, this kit must be maintained at the highest standard. Neither the Regiment, nor most individuals, are in a position to reimburse the Crown to replace lost, damaged, or destroyed kit. 5. All kit must be marked clearly, but discretely, with the individual s name and the last three digits of that person s service number. 6. Only current CF issued items may be worn unless otherwise ordered by the Commanding Officer. 3

The Gaelic motto was chosen for the 16th Battalion in 1914, by Privates A.M. MacLennan and Norman Cameron and means Ready for the Fray. Claymore 1. The Claymore is derived from the great sword introduced into Scotland just before 1500. It originally had a 3.5 foot blade and was designed to be used with two hands. The disuse of armour caused the addition of the basket hilt to protect the hands. By the 18th century, the Claymore had evolved to the present pattern under the influence of German and English Armourors. 2. The Claymore is carried by Officers, the Regimental Sergeant Major, and the Drum Major. 7

3. The Claymore scabbard is attached to the white cross belt which is worn over the right shoulder under the silk maroon Net Sash. The short, forward sling of the cross belt attaches to the upper ring of the scabbard, the long rearward most ring of the cross belt attaches to the lower ring of the scabbard. When properly adjusted the Claymore should hang at an angle, with the pommel forward and the tip of the scabbard rearward. The long rearward sling is to be twisted 3.5 times around the scabbard. On the Patrol Blue Jacket, the Regimental Collar Badges are worn on the collar, 4.5 cm to the outside edge left and right of the pin fastener so that they are straight up and down when the jacket is worn. c. On the Mess Dress Jacket, they are worn on the lapels, approimately 9 to 12.8 cm down from the shoulder seam, again straight up and down. Cross Belt and Slings, White 1. It is made of white leather and worn over the right shoulder to carry the Claymore. The Brass Plate is to be positioned above the intersection of the crimson sash and cross belt. Dirk 1. (Gaelic Biodag) The dirk is a traditional highland dagger worn from the right hip. By the 19th century, considerable artwork had taken place with semi-precious cairngorms being mounted on the pommel. At the bottom of the scabbard, a small knife and fork are affied so that the highlander was never without eating utensils. The Regimental pattern of dirk is the Gordon pattern. 2. The dirk is worn only by Field Grade Officers and Pipers with specific orders of dress. Garter Flashes, Scarlet 1. Garter Flashes are derived from a yard long garter that was to holdup a man s hose or stocking as was tied to his breaches. Today, Garter Flashes are designed to hold up hose tops and hose. 2. Personnel who were not present on parade will wear the standard cap badge kilt pin which can be purchased by the member with non-public funds at the kit shop. Sash, Infantry 1.
