What is Clostridium difficile? Clostridium difficile, or C.diff, is a spore-forming bacterium that is present in the intestines of about 5% of healthy people. All people have both good and bad types of bacteria in their bodies. C.diff is a bad bacteria. If good bacteria are killed off (by taking antibiotics for example), then C.diff, if present, can overpopulate inside the intestine and/or colon. When this occurs, C.diff causes a variety of symptoms, from diarrhea to more serious life-threatening intestinal disease. C.diff is the most common cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea in developed countries. 1 The spore form of C.diff represents a dormant, highly protected state. C.diff spores are extremely resistant to heat, drying and numerous chemical agents, including a variety of disinfectants. In addition C.diff spores have the ability to survive for up to 5 months on surfaces. 2 1. Drumford et al. 2006. AJIC 16(1): 15-19 2. Kim et al. 1981. J Infect Dis 143: 42-50

Why do Health Canada registrations matter? Obtaining a Health Canada registration means that the Health Canada has reviewed and accepted the results of detailed product efficacy testing across specific microorganisms. Efficacy testing is performed under strict guidelines from Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) to ensure data integrity. The testing includes specific microefficacy data under particular test conditions. Products without registration CANNOT make or imply kill claims.

Why Is This Important? C.difficile can cause potentially life-threatening illnesses Insuring that you are getting rid of illness-causing bacteria helps to keep your patients, staff and visitors healthy and coming back to your facility. Only products registered by Health Canada to kill C.difficile spores give you the assurance that you are killing them.
