Paléo Festival Stromae concert Friday 23th July Schedule of the show: 23h30-01h00 36 000 spectators High density (difficult to estimate in real time) 54 evacuations from the front-of-stage including 10 medical check (festival record = 279 people evacuated, Muse concert in 2004) 2 986 children without tickets (usual for such a line-up) 4 lost children at the nursery (very few) No major incident, feeling that things were under control
Stromae at Paléo Festival Density estimation and risk analysis
Observations All the festival-goers came to see Stromae. Up to 10:30pm, there were spectators everywhere in the festival site, the stalls were crowded and all sitting areas were occupied. Then, a never seen rush to the toilets has been noticed and the main stage attracted everybody. Everywhere else: desert zones. Paléo s Expert group Report 2014 (dir. Michel Gisler)
Density estimation Degree 0: sparse crowd Degree 1: low density of crowd (1 à 2,5 pers/m2) Degree 2: only the chest and the head are visible (3 à 5 pers./m2) Degree 3: only the head are visible (high density > 5 pers./m2) Degree 4: only the top of the head are visible (critical density)

Questions Was the crowd density really dangerous during Stromae's show? Do the extra giant-screens really play a crucial role in density management? Is it possible to improve the real time evaluation of the risk due to density during such a concert? What should be the decision making process to stop the show in case of high density?
Thank you for your attention!
