1 PE311935 2 PE311934 In creating patterns for the collection, Lycke started crafting a story about romantic journeys and sentimental greetings through a collage of words and images. She drew inspiration from sensations and places real or imagined: looking at old postcards, bookmarks, stamps, clothing and fashion; summoning the smell of pastries and perfume; and envisioning romantic destinations like the Eiffel Tower that are fixtures in film. Basically inspiration came from everything that brings you to a certain time and place, Lycke says. It could be a look, a smell or a place. Leaves/assorted colours With its mix of bright colours and contrasting black and white, as well as flowing organic leaves, labels and dots and roses and stripes, MYRLILJA is coordinated and mismatched at the same time. Like a bag of mixed candy or a sweet memory, everyone can find a favourite or two in MYRLILJA. Lycke says her favourites are the black and white quilt cover with organic leaves and the yellow cushion. With the quilt cover, I like that the organic leaves turn into stripes all of the sudden, she says. I took care of the pattern s edges so that it comes alive and isn t just a repeat. It really is a print that s custom made. And with the cushion, she likes the contrast between the bright and strong yellow versus the sweet label that reads Romantic memories Shanghai. PE311943 2 PE311947 3 PE311946 PE311948 Perhaps her attraction to that yellow cushion also lies in Lycke s fond memories of this collection her first for IKEA and her first time working with textiles that also brought her to an IKEA product development center in Shanghai. It s a long way from being inspired by the labels and shapes of old perfume bottles in a workspace in Malmö, Sweden, to discussing a textile pattern on the factory floor in China. Because of communication and language, to be there and be able to point and say yes or no or left or right is really a must, she says. PE311941 Though more IKEA products and textiles are on the way from Lycke, this collection was a learning process for her, but an exciting one that s left her wanting to learn more. For example, she learned that adjustments have to be made based on different countries. You have to be aware that a certain design that looks perfect for a pillow in Sweden has to be adjusted so it looks good for pillows in the United States, too, since dimensions vary, she says. I think sometimes it s an advantage to not know what you re getting into, she says. You don t know what s not possible so therefore everything is possible. 1 PE311944 PE311945 2 3 1 4. I think almost all of us can relate to these places even if we haven t been there, Lycke says. You ve seen movies and images or heard songs. I think everyone can get the sense we are after.
