Na Leo O Atlas ATLAS INSURANCE AGENCY VOLUME 12, ISSUE 7 JULY 2016 Summer Boot Camp! one Atlas. 1132 Bishop Street Suite 1600 Honolulu, HI 96813 808 533 3222 Inside this issue: Summer Boot Camp 1 3 Welcome! 3 4 In June, Island Holdings started a Summer Wellness Campaign and all companies can participate in the Boot Camp. They offer a wide range of zumba/exercise classes, 100-250 minute physical activity challenge, Wellness Bingo Challenge, Walking Wednesdays, and the popular one, Selfie Fridays! First we had to walk to the King Kamehameha statue and then the next one was to the statue of Father Damien. If you participate in these events, you can earn gold stars. The goal is 30 stars and if you earn that amount, you get to be on the 30 Gold Star Wall of Famers and receive a free shaker bottle that says I survived Wellness Boot Camp! And there were four star players at Atlas that got on that Wall of Famers early Vivian Haitsuka, Chong Kenison, Steven Lam and Aleksandr Razloga. Good job! We wanted to share in all the selfies that were taken, and we thought that was a great idea as it even made a chance to have team bonding when walking in a group together downtown! Thank you to Island Holdings for kicking off this Summer Wellness Campaign, looking forward to the Wellness Jam coming up on August 12...this all has definitely stirred up some competition in the office...in a good way! :) New Business Agents 4 Toastmasters 5 Straight from the Heart 6 7 One ATLAS 8 9 Submit your articles, pictures or suggestions to: Kristen Ribilla kribilla@atlasinsurance.com Atlas early 30 Gold Star Wall of Famers!

ATLAS INSURANCE AGENCY PAGE 4 Welcome, Samantha! By Dana Tokioka Please welcome (officially) Samantha Ranit as our Receptionist. She is a familiar face as she started off here through a temp agency and we liked her so much we wanted to keep her! Samantha recently came from Bank of Hawaii as a Customer Care Rep, and is a graduate of James Campbell High School. In her free time, she likes to hike, go to the beach, and take on any adventure that comes her way. Interesting fact she never uses metal utensils not even at home or 5-star restaurants! She will ask for plastic utensils. Please welcome Samantha, or Sam for short, to the Atlas Ohana! Welcome, Linn! She had been working with numbers and finances since she was 10 years old, helping her mom with balancing the checkbook. Most of her recent experiences had been with non-profits and so the insurance industry is new to her. A career in Accounting came naturally, but her original goal was working for Walt Disney as she pursued art and business. So to keep her creative side active, she does home renovation projects such as flooring the entire house! Impressive! She is married and has six wonderful children 1 biological and 5 hanai. ATLAS INSURANCE AGENCY PAGE 5 Eh, We Go Beach! By Kristen Ribilla Beach Party was the theme of our last Toastmaster s meeting and boy did I feel like going to the beach. Chenise, our Toastmaster of the day, walked in with her beach wear and beach towel, listening to the tunes of Bob Marley, all jubilated. (Jubilate was the word of the day to show great happiness; rejoice) And every time someone spoke, you had to give your best beach memory, and a lot of interesting stories came out of that! Being that this is only my second meeting, I am still getting the hang of things, but I was lucky to hear three fabulous speeches and I experienced three different feelings as once: hunger, heartwarming, and humor. First, Stephen Parker spoke about how to make The Gordon Ramsay Burger which made me drool and want to head right over to BLT Steak in Waikiki. Then Lily Yamamoto hit us with an emotional speech about What is love?, is it an act of kindness? Patience? Care? And last but not least, a humorous speech came up next Pukiki (Portuguese) 4 Life by Michael Cravalho, also known as Potogee, or Pocho.which I can definitely relate to. They were all wonderful speeches, all tugged at different feelings, but the best speaker award actually went into a tie, (the first time ever) and the winners were Lily Yamamoto & Michael Cravalho. Congratulations you two! If anyone interested in joining Toastmasters, please check out our next meeting on Thursday, August 18th from 12:00 1:00 p.m. in the Atlas Board Room. You just may like it!
ATLAS INSURANCE AGENCY PAGE 6 Summer is UV Safety Awareness Month! By Bonnie Pang & Vivian Haitsuka UV-B rays have short wavelengths that reach the outer layer of your skin and they also UV-A rays have longer wavelengths that can penetrate the middle layer of your skin. Here are the harmful things unprotected sun exposure can do: Cause vision problems and damage to your eyes Suppression of the immune system Premature aging of the skin Skin cancer 2016 HEART Committee Aleksandr Razloga, x-8740 Anna Gima, x-8714 Chenise Blalock, x-8680 Daun Watanabe, x-8610 Kristen Ribilla, x-8791 Vince Miyoi, x-8719 Vivian Haitsuka, x-8653 2016 HEART Committee Advisors Bonnie Pang, x-8651 Lance Kawano, x-8725 Sharon Hodson, x-8657 Steven Pang, x-8619 Vince Miyoi, x-8719 Naomi Sutton, WorkLife Hawaii What you can do to minimize the risk that comes with sun exposure. 1. Cover Up: Wearing a Hat (preferably wide brimmed) or other shade-protective clothing can partly shield your skin from the harmful effects of UV ray exposure. Proper clothing may include long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats, and Sunglasses - for eye protection. 2. Stay in the Shade: The sun's glare is most intense at midday. Staying in the shade between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. will further protect your skin. The sun can still damage your skin on cloudy days or in the winter. For this reason, it is important to stay protected throughout the year. 3. Choose the Right Sunscreen: This is extremely important. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) new regulations for sunscreen labeling recommend that your sunscreen have a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, and should protect against both Ultraviolet A (UV-A) and Ultraviolet B (UV-B) rays. 4. Use the Right Amount of Sunscreen: According to the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, most people apply only 25-50 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen. When out in the sun, it's important that you apply at least one ounce (a palm full) of sunscreen every two hours. You should apply it more often if you are sweating or swimming, even if the sunscreen is waterproof. Courtesy of the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs

ATLAS INSURANCE AGENCY PAGE 8 We are ONE ATLAS! Myles, I wanted to take a moment to bring to your attention, the character of one of our own. As you know I recently took on the responsibility of leading the Honolulu Association of Insurance Professionals (HAIP) effective July 1 st. As fate would have it, I received a message yesterday morning that the guest speaker unexpectedly had cancelled, leaving me with the task of finding someone to fill his slot at the last minute. The first call I made was to Steve Pang, who I knew was more than qualified to do the presentation. Once I explained my predicament, without hesitation, he was willing to step in & help, even though the meeting was the next day. I received several verbal compliments on how well he did, but wanted to share one in particular.. Thanks, Chenise. I was very impressed with his presentation, and hoped to share with the others who couldn t make it today. The Powerpoint was really on spot with the stats he shared. In any case, hopefully he ll be willing and/or able to share it with us. Appreciate your assistance and quick response. Mahalo! Aloha, Margo Makanani HEMIC As stated above, Steve did an amazing job & not only talked about having a plan, if placed in a situation that involves an Active Shooter, but also how to respond & possibly prevent Workplace Violence in general. Unfortunately, we are living in times were we see daily, that these are skills that could very likely be used to save our lives. Did I mention that today was my first meeting as President? Needless to say, I could have been left in the awkward position of having to explain the absence of a speaker to a room full of people expecting to hear a talk on Active Shooters in the workplace. But instead I walked away extremely proud to be part of a company that doesn t just talk about being One Atlas but lives it. Thank you, Steve! Chenis Blalock
ATLAS INSURANCE AGENCY PAGE 9 We are ONE ATLAS!, cont. Hana hou! Myles, I love telling you how awesome it is to work with a team of professionals that live out the One Atlas motto. I wanted to share my most recent experience, where Irlene Torres took time out of her super busy day to assist me with translating (in Japanese) for a customer. I was so impressed w/irlene s patience as the elderly customer struggled to understand what she was purchasing. There was even a time when she practically sat on the floor, as a show of respect, so that she would not be above the customer as she spoke. This customer was accompanied by her realtor, Ms. Nagai, who took the time to write a nice note of thanks, so I ll let her tell the story because she does it so much better than I. Thank you Irlene! Chenise Blalock ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Chenise and Irlene, You two made Mrs. Kobayashi (and me) very, very happy today; I could see the relief on Mrs. Kobayashi's face as we left your office. She has done business with Island Insurance (Atlas) for about 50 years when she and her husband owned a home on 16th Avenue. She sold her home over a year ago (with another realtor) and is now renting at One Kalakaua. She is a referral through a friend, also from Japan. Chenise, thank you for assisting Mrs. Kobayashi with the insurance policy and Irlene, for helping with the translation and thorough explanation. You two make a terrific team!! What a relief for us that she is now covered. She is such a sweet heart at 89 years young and an inspiration to me!! Mahalo again for your excellent service!! Fusayo "Fussy" H.
