Name: Darnestown Presbyterian Church Cemetery ID: 76 15120 Turkey Foot Road Darnestown ADC Map: 27 Grid: B-3 Cemetery Association: Presbyterian Condition: Good Negative Impacts: None Burials: 500-1000 Date range of burials: 1836-2004 Description: Large, well-kept cemetery located behind old church. Rectangular space (approx. 150 x 500 ft) bordered by wrought iron fence. Roughly 3/4 of existing space contains burials. Remainder is open land. One main paved path with a perpendicular side path. Comments: Markers (both old & new) tend to be well-constructed, some are very ornate. Layout is orderly, although not in exact rows Survey date: 4/4/2004 MP 24/19 Darnestown Historic District

Surrounded by a wire fence. Some gravestones broken, some illegible, some taken down. Comments: Located on wooded area behind Derwood Bible Church on Chieftain Ave. Fence in need of repair. Graves unevenly grouped, not arranged in rows, very erratic. Large cedars & boxwoods. Per Janet Manuel, cemetery started as Ricketts Family burying ground. Survey date: 4/4/2004

Name: Elijah United Methodist Church Cemetery ID: 79 18401 Elgin Road Poolesville ADC Map: 16 Grid: B/C-7 Cemetery Association: Free Black, Methodist Condition: Good Negative Impacts: Burials: 105 known Date range of burials: 1871-2004 Description: Lots of open space on deep lot. Depressions in ground with no markers indicate many unmarked graves. Three sides have wood picket fence. Trees throughout. Well kept. Some markers handmade, some funeral home plaques. Comments: Congregation began in 1871. First church built by John Adams of Poolesville. Present church built after 1950. Oldest marker embedded in tree immediately behind church to left. Survey date: 10/9/2004

Burials: 128 Date range of burials: 1917-2004 Description: Lots of unmarked graves; lots of empty room. Back part in woods; overgrown, fallen trees. Access by a long gravel road between Johnson's Park and former Longview school. Makes a circle through cemetery. New section has even rows and is tended. Comments: Across from Mineral Springs Drive Survey date: 5/1/2004

Burials: unknown Date range of burials: 1906-1923 (known) Description: Only one marker exists. Burials earlier than 1906 under parking lot. Some were likely moved to Emory Grove Cemetery which is owned by church and is located behind Johnson's Park (see ID #80). Comments: Marker is for Rev. A.B. Dorsey b. 1859, d. 1906 & wife Bettie b. 1860, d. 1923. Marker was probably moved closer to church when cemetery was paved for parking. Survey date: 5/1/2004

Mowed with a few shrubs. No paths. Many unmarked graves. Surrounded by forest & farm on back side. Comments: Survey date: 4/17/2004

Name: Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery ID: 90 Woodside Cemetery 1607 Grace Church Road Silver Spring ADC Map: 36 Grid: J-7 Cemetery Association: Episcopal Condition: Excellent Negative Impacts: Burials: 150 Date range of burials: 1840-2004 Description: Large variety of stones, but most are tablets w/ husband & wife names. Stones in newest section are flush granite markers. Oldest stones are faded & not easily readable. There is a monument to 17 unknown Confederate soldiers at the southwest corner. Comments: Landscaping includes large old trees & large shrub bushes. Cemetery is bordered on the west by Georgia Ave., on the east by the church, the south by Grace Church Road & on the north by church offices. There is no fencing. Survey date: 11/13/2004

Surrounded on three sides by houses. West side is playing field for Rock Terrace Special School. Comments: Some markers propped against trees, see info on cemetery history and burials in file. One family plot surrounded by metal fence - Bell and Cashell families. Carved stones and at least 3 fieldstones inside fence. Comments: One fieldstone located outside fenced plot. Located on Edgehill property, but was associated with a church. Transcriptions in file. Survey date: 8/6/2005 MP 23/17 Edgehill Cavicchi, p. 99-100

Mainly upright stones and some flush markers. Five fieldstone markers. Good condition, mowed, well tended. No paths. Comments: Congregation formed and church built in 1874. Many trees - forested. Some tilted & toppled markers. Bulb plantings around many of stones. Comments: Sign at site says: "The burial ground of the ancestors of the original African American community of Howard Chapel. 1862." Survey date: 4/1/1949 MP 23/11 Howard Chapel Site and Cemetery Cavicchi, p. 122, transcribed in USGenWeb and interment.net

Name: Hyattstown Christian Church Cemetery ID: 95 25625 Frederick Road Hyattstown ADC Map: 2 Grid: H-10 Cemetery Association: Christian Setting: Rural Condition: Fair Negative Impacts: Dumping outside fence. Some broken stones. Stones need cleaning. Burials: 225 Date range of burials: 1813-2000 Description: On the east side of Frederick Rd. (MD Rte 355) approx. 1/2 mile south of the church. No signs to identify cemetery. Markers mostly upright stones with a few ground level bronze markers. Laid out in north-south rows with no paths or roads. Comments: Older stones blackened with age and moss. Chain link fence only on west side w/ single gate. Bennett Creek on north & east sides. Trees & guardrail separate cemetery from road. Present church at 26012 Fred. Rd.- across from cem. Survey date: 4/11/2004 MP 10/59 Hyattstown Historic District Cavicchi, p. 133

Name: Hyattstown United Methodist Church Cemetery ID: 96 26165 Frederick Road Hyattstown ADC Map: 2 Grid: H-9 Cemetery Association: Methodist Condition: Good Negative Impacts: Stones need cleaning Burials: 1200 Date range of burials: 1823-2004 Description: Cemetery is on the north side of church & extends past & behind the church. Markers behind church are mostly 19th century stones. Markers are mostly upright stones. Many obelisks & older stones are moss covered or blackened by age. Comments: Older stones appear to be sandstone, later ones are granite or marble. Chainlink fence on north & east sides; west & south side to middle of church fenced by single chain.no fence south side behind church. Mowed & has a few evergreen trees. Well kept. No fence. In residential neighborhood. Probably a lot of unmarked graves--there are depressions. Two Rose of Sharon bushes. Comments: Many family plots with upright concrete corner markers bearing family initials. These are being replaced with flat disks on the ground, also with initials. Survey date: 10/9/2004

Burials: 291 Date range of burials: 1886-2004 Description: Located on long narrow lot behind church. Paved lane through center lined with cedars. Some burials in woods to left side. Lots of metal funeral home markers (some piled at bases of trees) & lots of unmarked graves. Comments: Survey date: 4/25/2004

Granite benches throughout identifying family plots. There is a Holocaust memorial & many benches & markers identify Holocaust survivors. Comments: Jewish cemetery, associated with Norbeck Memorial Park (same owner). Main road circles through with side roads into sections. There is an entrance gate, but no fencing. Beautifully landscaped & has flowering trees along the road sides and throughout. Survey date: 4/15/2004
