Bejeweled! by Lilly Walters Page 4 IInttroductti ion Just about any feminine design will get more of that wow factor by adding jewels, of some type. You can paint them on, and/or stick a real one on. Either way, o la la! For many years, face and body painters have been sticking a single jewel on the foreheads of many simple designs, especially when creating a Princess. Some of the most famous face and body painters create a fantastic, elaborate look, with paint. I loved the look so much, I wrote a book on how to paint them on: 3-D Face and Body Painting Jewels & Necklaces. Then, a few years ago, Marcela Murad, Mama Clown, who - arguably - has had more influence on the face painting world than anyone other singe person, come up with the idea of using clusters of scrapbooking jewels. Marcela is one of my personal mentors. It seems every year she comes up with something innovative that catches my imagination.
Bejeweled! by Lilly Walters Page 5 Allll Aboutt Jewellss BLING IS THE THING! THE ONLY THING? Although we most often see jewels attached to the face, all kinds of other things look great. I found a little set of flowers, with glitter and pearl centers. They are lovely on the face, as are many types of feathers. TYPES OF JEWELS The types of jewels used in face and body painting are normally made from glass or acrylic. Single Jewels The larger single jewels are fantastic for a center piece, for instance in a butterfly or princess crown. Most often loose jewels come in small bags or boxes. Some will have adhesive on the back. These loose jewels come in all sizes. The smaller ones make lovely, little accents. The larger ones are great for a center piece of a design Clusters of Jewels Then, there are the clusters of jewels, which are used for scrapbooking. These have and adhesive on the back, are stuck to a plastic sheet, and stick together in a design which, when pulled from that sheet, stay in that design. If the cluster is.
Bejeweled! by Lilly Walters Page 6 COSTS OF JEWELS The clusters shown on the past few illustrations will cost you from about $1 to $12. You will cut these cut, and be able to make 2-4 jewel bags from the larger sets. You can buy bags of the single jewels, normally about 100 jewels, for under $15. Those fancier single center piece clusters are much expensive. You normally get 2 5 on a sheet, the sheet will cost from $1 $5. Also.. SYMMETRICAL JEWEL CLUSTERS Which Types of Clusters to Buy You actually will only use a small portion of the bigger clusters as an accent to each design. So, each one can go a long way. You will be able to use all of the pretty swirly jewel clusters you will see in the craft stores but beware.

At first, I tried to take bunches of them to gigs and cut them up, while the customers waited impatiently. Not good. It takes much too long to figure out what goes where, then cut it apart. Between overflowing craft room, and frustration at my gigs, I was discouraged, disorganized and drowning in bling! I was not happy, nor were my customers. I had a disaster on my hands! I solved it all by getting organized. Storage Organization First, I organized the way I stored my inventory at home. Now, I I find removing them from their packaging makes it much easier to store, as they will take up less space. DO NOT
Bejeweled! by Lilly Walters Page 8 Step By Step to Cut Jewels into Design Sets I pull out a box, of whichever color I need. I lay a life size practice sheet on my workspace. I select one of the larger items I will put apart to make the side pieces. These are often much too big to use for our purposes. I have here laid one cluster on my life size practice face. You can see it will not be useable as is. Next, make sure you.
Bejeweled! by Lilly Walters Page 9 Putting the Larger Clusters To Work In the example on the previous pages, under Step By Step to Cut Jewels into Design Sets, the piece I used was very easy to imagine on either side of a face. Where is gets complicated, is in using the larger pieces. Larger pieces are great to use, as you can cut them up to use for many faces, so they are more cost effective. Of course, they are also more work. Just use these steps. Step by Step Here is a bigger cluster. This one is called a frame as it was created to used around a photo, in a scrapbook, like a photo frame. Laying it on this life size practice sheet photo, you can see it is much too big. So, these next 4 steps are where the magic happens! Ussi ing The Jewellss Att Eventtss It will save you a great deal of time if you organize the bags by color. You want to be able to say, What s your favorite color? and grab the right color in just a few seconds. Develop a fast system that works for you. A small container, with compartments, works well. I often use..
Bejeweled! by Lilly Walters Page 10 WORKING WITH YOUR AUDIENCE Let Them Pick? Or, Do You? Sometimes I let them go through the packages, finding the perfect jewels they love. Sometimes I just say, What s your favorite color, and grab the package I think will work best. Disadvantages of Letting Them Pick Their Own Jewels Sometimes they will pull off two packages, instead of one Often, they will go play on the jumpy, and lose the package. Too often they will pick a set totally wrong for them. One little girl wanted a nice package of green jewels I had created. When she got to me, she wanted a tiger. Well, OK, I got created and made her into a bejeweled green tiger. No problem. But, another time an itsy bitsy picked the package with the BIGGEST jewel. Oh boy, it went from her hairline down onto the bridge of her nose. I could not talk her out of it! It is actually slower to let them pick while they are waiting, because, you need to keep yelling down the line that they need to pick jewels. Advantages of Letting Them Pick It helps them feel involved, and in control. It gives them something to do while they wait in line It gives you an opportunity to interactive more with the parents. HOW TO ADHERE THE JEWELS TO THE SKIN Although many of the jewels are self-adhesive, that adhesive is not meant to be used on the skin, nor is it very strong. I have never heard of anyone having a problem sticking the scrapbooking jewels directly on the skin. Still, I like to use a skin safe, or even eye safe adhesive (eye lash glue). to act as a bit of a barrier. Skin adhesive is often made with.

I no longer try to save my jewel bags. I just cut the top off with a little pair of scissors I keep easily accessible in my kit. The jewels pour right out onto a spot on my work area. As I am painting their face, I keep glancing at the jewel set. I know there are 5 pieces as I made all of them. That gives me a chance to.. TIPS ON ASYMMETICAL DESIGNS - Most designs can be asymmetrical. They often look more arty and elegant. In this section I have a few designs, with asymmetrical elements in and jewel clusters. People have often commented on how amazing it is that I find jewel clusters in neat designs that match my design. But, it is actually the other way around. I. s. One of my mentors, the amazing Lynne Jamieson, did this blue bathing suit design, at the 2011 Face and Body Art International Convention, in Orlando, Florida. With the help of Marcela Murad, they..
