He received his F.G.A through the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) in 1987 passing the diploma examinations with distinction. Throughout the 1990 s, he developed and taught the Gemmology program at both Red River Community College and The University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, worked for the Canadian Institute of Gemmology, was President and Founder of the Jewellery Appraisers Association of Canada and was asked to be a contributing author for the 5th & 6th Editions of Robert Webster s Gems which even today is considered one of the most authoritative textbooks in Gemmology. Currently in addition to lecturing and promoting the Handbook of Gemmology, he is a regular contributor to Jewelry Business Advisor, a popular jewellery magazine and on-line publication and JewelryNetAsia. New treatment and enhancements of gemstones CPD points-2 GRANT HAMID Grant has been a popular lecturer and practical demonstrator in gemmology at GAA Victoria for more than 30 years. TINO HAMMID Tino Hammid is an internationally renowned gem and Jewellery photographer whose work has appeared in most major jewelry publications. Striving for realism in gemstone photography. How real are photographs of gems and jewelry? How often do you wonder if a photo is really showing a piece as you would see it in person? Achieving realism is the goal here. CPD points-2 RAY HOOD Ray Hood is a world renowned Master Hand Engraver. Originally from London, Ray now resides in Adelaide, Australia and runs his own successful business, London Engraver. Ray is the only hand engraver in Australia to have completed an intense 6 year apprenticeship at Garrard & Co, the former Queen s Crown Jewellers in London. He is a member of the venerated Goldsmith s of London and was made a Freeman of the City of London for his services to the trade. Hand engraving at this level is highly exclusive and very rarely found. Hand engraving is an age old art-form providing bespoke and personalised engraving onto precious metals. All engraving is done entirely by hand using high speed steel gravers and is amongst the very finest offered in Australia. Specialties include pet portraits, family crests and heraldry, antique restoration, seal engraving, deep carving, wax carving...to name but a few! Ray has also hand engraved many prestigious sporting awards including Wimbledon, Formula 1, the FA Premier League Cup, ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC Champions trophy, the Augusta US Masters trophy, Royal Ascot and the Heineken Cup. PRESENTERS RICHARD HUGHES A.G. graduate of Bangkok s AIGS (1980), and a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (F.G.A.) (1982). He was the director of the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences in Bangkok, Thailand during the 1980s, and also served at the American Gem Trade Association s gemological laboratories in California and New York from 2005 to 2008. In 1997 he authored Ruby & Sapphire, which is considered by many in the gem and jewelry industry to be the most authoritative treatise on the subject. Hughes has authored or co-authored a number of books on gems as well as numerous articles on gemology over the past 34 years. In recognition of his contributions Hughes has received the American Gem Society s Richard T. Liddicoat Journalism Award in both 2004 and 2005. Hughes has worked both in lab gemology and also in the wholesale, retail and mining sides of the gem business. In 2010, Richard was awarded the prestigious Antonio C. Bonanno Award for Excellence in Gemology by the Accredited Gemologists Association. This award recognizes Richard s efforts in successfully advancing the profile of many gems and the countries that produce them through his travelogues, as well as more scientific writings and the generous sharing of this information through trade journals and his website. The award underscores the responsibility of the international gemological community to encourage and reward ongoing research, education and dissemination of information. Gemmological Heresies There are certain ideas that gemologists accept as being unabashedly and unassailably true, and heaven forbid that someone might question them. In this program, Richard Hughes will reach into gemmology s darker corners and poke some of these demons with a sharp stick. Those who enjoy puzzles and are unafraid to have cherished beliefs challenged will not want to miss this. Ruby & Sapphire: A Collector s Guide Ruby and sapphire are two of the most important precious stones. Richard Hughes has spent a lifetime working with these gems, authoring several classic books on the subject. In this program he will discuss the key factors that collectors should look for with ruby and sapphire, along with taking a journey around the world visiting the most important sources. Author of book Ruby and Sapphire - Corundum including the latest fields. CPD points-3

PATRICK JELK Born in Lens, a Swiss mountain village during the summer of 1948, Patrick moved with his family to Geneva where he was first introduced to the world of jewellery at the age of 12. Working as a delivery boy he couriered curious packages between the large jewellery houses. At one particular house: Ludovic Matteis, his interest was noted and he was subsequently encouraged through 4 years of apprenticeship. The following two years working in the atelier of Gilbert Albert, Patrick s appreciation of unconventional design flourished while he worked in such a creativity rich environment. Further to this Patrick worked for other major jewellery houses doing exhibition pieces for the Basle Fair. While Patrick s technical skills were exemplary his creative skills were only realised when he arrived in Australia. Influenced by the creative freedom of Australia, Patrick began to explore the limits to which he could push innovation of design. Creating wearable pieces of art which charm and intrigue his unique approach has given him a stamp of individuality which is shown by the enormous range of diversity in his work. His sculptural approach and balance of design allows a successful combination of unusual elements. From Ants, Fish, Beetles, Moon, Planets and Lily flowers, his choice of subject is transformed by the finesse of his fluid, elegant shapes into exceptional pieces of art. Through regular exhibitions and private showings, Patrick s work has now become sought after by collectors of fine jewellery. A display of jewellery making techniques.
