Designed as a realistic mature bird of paradise flower, this brooch by Nicholas Varney has a canoe-shaped bud, defined by two abalone horn pearls, sprouting five gently curving sepals embellished with ajouré-cut fields of pavé-set, circularcut yellow sapphires and colourless diamonds, surrounding a petal of pavéset circular-cut blue sapphires in oxidized silver. Smaller abalone pearls further embellish the base of the flower and the underside features hand-wrought, fancy grille in 18K yellow gold; mounted in 18K yellow gold and oxidized silver. Brooch in 18K white and yellow gold set with Elatius coral, rubies and colourless diamonds; Palermo Collection, Dolce&Gabbana Alta Gioielleria. POA. www.dolcegabbana.com Flowers are one of the most interpreted motifs in design, particularly jewellery design, and throughout history each traditional specie has been attributed a meaning or a significance. The inherent beauty of the flowers themselves, and sometimes their scent, has made them the miracle of nature best suited to celebrate special occasions, or beautify anything. While well-known flowers are still a favourite among jewellery designers, it is equally fascinating and welcome to see that exotic or unusual varieties, and even hybrids straight from the imagination, are increasingly seen. In the following pages, I have selected designs that either challenge the notion of flora in jewellery designs, or ones that keep it traditional, though with a twist; in every case, all of them maximise the potential of the motif. From spectacular haute joaillerie renditions to desirable fine jewellery pieces, the price range is wide, yet the creative and quality pedigree is consistently high. They are all one of a kind.

www.dolcegabbana.com Earrings in 18K white and yellow gold set with Elatius coral, emeralds, brown and colourless diamonds, and South Sea pearls; Palermo Collection, Dolce&Gabbana Alta Gioielleria. POA. These new creations by Dolce&Gabbana Alta Gioielleria are an ode to bountiful femininity. Flora goes hand in hand with womanhood as seen in the carved coral figurine, whose youthful heroine wears a flower crown atop her long locks of hair. In the brooch featured in the introduction spread, the nymph is nestled in a diamond and ruby paved rose branch. In what could be a representation of Ceres, the Roman goddess of harvest, another carved icon presides in a necklace that is a lush garden of delights. Precious cherries, bananas and pineapples sprout among a meadow of pretty flowers, and they sit next to female cameos that seem to be in conversation with one another. It is up to the wearer to write this part of the story. www.cartier.com The Cartier Résonance Collection is first and foremost about highlighting the beating heart of carefully selected precious gemstones (see my interview of Jacqueline Karachi-Langane featured last month). In this instance, the rhythmic intensity of a rare purple garnet is set in an abstract toi et moi design, alongside a diamond-paved single flower with a yellow diamond centre. On one side, pebble-shaped gems set as chains and in hues that match the two main stones hang freely, hereby adding movement and a touch of cool. It is true that these little pebbles help balance the importance of the garnet and yellow diamond, or at least help make them as much playfully enchanting as the side tassels. Ring in 18K grey gold set with an 8.75-carat cushion-cut purple garnet, rose-cut yellow diamonds, multi-coloured sapphire pebbles and brilliant-cut diamonds. Photography by Vincent Wulveryck Cartier. www.sothebysdiamonds.com Sotheby s Diamonds Green Tea Necklace in 18K white gold and platinum, comprising a choker of pavé-set diamonds, a tea leaf of fancy green diamonds and carved jade and a rare 55.09-carat D VVS2 round brilliant-cut diamond. POA. It takes sheer talent to include a huge gemstone in a design and succeed in making the whole composition look both poetic and delicate. It is even more impressive when that gemstone is an exceptionally rare one, namely a 55.09-carat D VVS2 diamond. How do you prevent it from overwhelming the design, yet still celebrate its show-stopping beauty? Leave it to Sotheby s Diamonds. In their hands, the high voltage gem becomes a radiant bloom from which a graceful leaf emerges, with the exquisite duo lightly suspended on a paired-down diamond chain. The extra touch in finesse is the black jade stroke that underlines the leaf petiole, whilst conferring calligraphic elegance to the piece. This piece is available for purchase at Sotheby s Diamonds New Bond Street Salon: 34-35 New Bond Street, London W1A 2AA

www.fabiosalini.it Ring in 18K white gold set with ivory (from Mammoth fossil), one 0.68-carat pear-shaped ruby and pavé-set diamonds (3.27cts). POA. Earrings in silver set with ivory (from Mammoth fossil), 2 pear-shaped rubies (1.62cts) and pavé-set diamonds (5.68cts). POA. (Note: the earrings have been made in silver to improve their lightness. In addition the ivory has been carved on the back to enhance comfort). From the branches of what is unmistakably a rose bush thanks to thorns, the dents on the edges of the rose petals, the multi-layered unfolding of the petals, and the little drop of blood to complete the scene, this suite by Fabio Salini could be the illustration of an epic poem about enduring love. The small number of materials used (ivory, diamond and ruby) belies the skill with which Salini has been able to hint at such a universal backstory. Without reservation, these earrings and matching ring have a poignant quality as well as a dash of passion. They are fantasy that has been sculpted as high jewellery.

www.vancleefarpels.com Straight from Le Secret high jewellery collection, the Marguerite d Amour Clip by Van Cleef & Arpels, according to the team, pays tribute to the well-known game, in which the player picks the petals off a daisy to discover the true feelings of their beloved. Petals of diamonds in serti-neige style setting some on white gold and some on yellow unfurl around a heart of pink and orange spinels. The yellow gold petals are fitted with an invisible mechanism, enabling them to be delicately rotated to reveal engraved messages: Tendrement, Passionnément, Éternellement, Infiniment and A la folie. Each message is punctuated by a lucky diamond in a star setting, for Van Cleef & Arpels only wishes the best. Of course the worst outcome pas du tout (not at all) from the original game has been omitted. Marguerite d Amour Clip in 18K yellow and white gold, set with diamonds, orange and pink spinels; Le Secret collection. POA.

www.glennspiro.com This brooch and cuff by Glenn Spiro evoke Victorian boudoirs and high society balls. The deep magenta, the bloom of the lifelike poppy flower and the silkiness of the velvet, all point to sumptuous decorum. Besides women have always worn a ribbon on the parts of the body that were thought to be in particular need of protection (the head, the throat, the ankles, or the wrists), so this dazzling piece is as much an amulet as a head-turning jewel. Then nestled in the plum-coloured feast is a pristine roundcut diamond, which thanks to an articulated mechanism can be hidden from view or revealed. Indeed one can turn the inner petals so that the central diamond becomes enclosed and hidden within a bud of rubies. Poppy Bangle & Brooch in titanium set with one 10.14-carat round-cut diamond (F-VS2 / GIA), 4,232 brilliant-cut rubies (116.89cts), 305 brilliant-cut diamonds on the brooch clasp (3.14cts) and one 0.67-carat cabochon ruby on the clasp of the velvet bracelet. POA.

www.wallace-chan.com Wonders of Life Earrings set with 2 diamonds (4.02cts), 2 DIF diamonds (1.49cts), pink sapphires, emeralds, rock crystal, tsavorite garnets, and titanium. POA. Like in any other of Wallace Chan s creations, these earrings come with a riveting backstory. The Wonders of Life earrings represent the miracle of seeds producing flowers. Their design is inspired by the pinecone, the fruit of one of the world s most ancient trees, and each part is a meticulous technical feat on its own right. From the yellow diamond-encrusted orb that is encased in a crystal, the tsavorite garnets alluding to neurons and synapses, the pink sapphire linking the plant stem and roots to the flower head (one pair of baguette-cut white diamonds are used as prongs to set the pink sapphire through tension), to the white diamond flower blooms culminating at the apex of the earring. Lastly a heart-shaped pink sapphire is set at the base of the petals unifying the flower and its roots, representing growth and transformation.

www.goldesignjoias.com.br Necklace in 18K yellow and white gold with pink sapphires and diamonds. POA. The new Oasis collection by Goldesign Jóias alludes to the heady beauty of the plants and flowers amidst the hostile desert environment. It is thus a story of survival, and how beauty can be found in the most unexpected places. The Brazilian designer has played with asymmetries and lots of layers, by grouping the elements (flowers and butterflies in this neckpiece) in abundant formations. It is lavish as if a shower of rain had just hit the dry ground and triggered an effervescent burst of life. It is an oasis, a fertile refuge amidst barren land. And as any sign of life should be praised, each design is joyous with colours as seen in this splendid necklace, which is lush with pink sapphires and diamonds.

www.nehadani.com Earrings in rainbow titanium set with opals and diamonds. POA. Beyond its feather-light weight, titanium has the extra advantage of offering vast possibilities in terms of achieving subtle colours. This characteristic was not lost on Neha Dani, who revels in bathing her organic-style creations in psychedelic colourways. Here the branches are writhing downwards with such vivacity that the opal berries and small flowers look set to perpetually expand. The rainbow colouration surprisingly adds an edge to the composition; it is more an intriguing plant specie you would find in an imaginary world (Avatar?) than in a field, for the floral theme has been so prevalent in jewellery design that it is exciting when one decides to challenge it.

www.feiliu.co.uk Opal Poppy Brooch in 18K white gold set with one jadeite cabochon, tsavorites, Australian opals, diamonds and yellow diamonds; Bespoke collection. POA. I cannot help but think that this bespoke poppy flower brooch by Fei Liu is a coquette specimen. Let me explain. The gentle bent stem (the line of a neck), the jadeite cabochon (staring at us), the pink opal petals (not unlike lush hair), and the yellow diamond pistils (glistening eyelashes), all could evoke a kittenish, seductive, sideways glance. Interestingly, the centre stone had to be set first, then all the other elements added with the pistils painstakingly assembled one by one to finish. It is such a delightful piece and a brilliant example of why commissioning a private jeweller is always a great idea. The jadeite was brought to Liu by the owner in the hope that the jeweller could revive the gem s glory. Mission accomplished!

www.vakjewellery.com Ring in 18K white gold set with rose- and fullcut diamonds (3.54cts), rose-cut blue sapphires (5.49cts) and natural Italian coral (5.71cts). POA. Earrings in 18K white gold set with roseand full-cut diamonds (9.59cts), rose-cut blue sapphires (11.13cts) and natural Italian coral (11.15cts). POA. If there were one jeweller who always succeeded in injecting life into his floral designs, it would definitely be Vishal Kothari, a.k.a V.A.K jewellery. The Indian designer has devised a signature technique that allows his workshop to invisibly set gemstones so they can flick like petals. Nothing too vigorous though, the petals only move gently back and forth when prompted to do so by a hand or head gesture. It is all about softness and romanticism, qualities compounded by the ample use of the rose cut. The unique flat bottom and faceted crown of a rose-cut indeed provides a soft glow that in Georgian times was enhanced by foiling the back of the gem. That way rose-cut diamonds would sparkle more intensely in candlelight.

www.campbellian.nyc Carved Opal Flowers Earrings in 18K yellow gold set with opals (7.74cts), 72 mint green garnets (3.69cts) and 72 colourless diamonds (0.40ct); one of a kind. POA. Some people see the world through coloured glasses, which more often than not makes them optimistic individuals. Some go even further and share their love for the colour spectrum in order to help other people feel better. Such is Bella Campbell, the woman behind Campbellian Collection, the American fine jewellery house that injects cleverly calibrated vividness into the jewellery world. Her love for coloured gemstones is mainly focused on saturated hues that she combines either in harmonious compositions or in vibrant contrasts. Either way, colours pop and all of sudden sunshine appears. The opal and mint green garnets earrings are a prime example, delivering both acidic zest and iridescent depth.

www.andremarcha.com Orchid Ring in 18K yellow gold set with one pink tourmaline cabochon, orange and pink sapphires, and white diamonds. POA. Bouquet Earrings in 18K yellow gold set with pink sapphires. POA. Now in its second generation, ANDRE MARCHA was established in 1969 in Lebanon. The founder, Andre Marcha, is known for his passion for sculpting, his attention to shapes and colours and the way they interact together. Some of the creations are miniature figurative replicas of everyday life objects or unique interpretations of all things flora. The main technique is a very dense paving of gemstones that allows the artist to render shading, graduation and nuances by using the whole colour spectrum. The Bouquet Earrings are a feast of pinks ranging from fuchsia to pale pink, each coloured expertly to create layers. The same goes for the Orchid Ring and its intricate colour scale spanning pale pinks to warm orange.
