Mackinac Island Honor Scouts Training Manual PART V: Uniform Information UNIFORM INFORMATION 1

UNIFORM INFORMATION The Mackinac Island Honor Scout uniform has remained basically the same over the years. It is very important that all Scouts, new or experienced, read this uniform information. All new uniform parts except for shoes, skort, sash & watch must be ordered through the MIHS Uniform Supervisor. Various used items will be available for purchase at the used uniform sale held at the February Training. If used items are purchased independent of the sale, they will be subject to the approval of the Uniform Supervisor. Your uniform does not include: cell phones, pagers, palm planners, or facial/tongue piercings. All piercings must be removed while in uniform or filled with a clear plastic stud. LABELING The most important part of the uniform is the label with your name. Directions for the location of the labels on the uniform parts must be followed by all members of the unit. We cannot stress enough the importance of permanent, easily-read labels. When you have over 60 jackets and ponchos, and 120 blouses, skorts and pairs of socks that all look exactly alike, the label becomes a very important item! It is preferred that you use printed sewn-in labels. Iron-on labels may be used, but must be sewn securely at each end as they tend to come off when washed. PLEASE do not write directly on uniform parts with a black pen, especially blouses. The ink will run in the washer. SKORTS Girls need TWO. They must be ordered from Land s End. The Uniform Supervisor will tell you what item number to use and the School Number that you will need to use in connection with your order. You may decide to buddy up with another family ordering to save on shipping and handling. Length of skorts will be checked by the Uniform Supervisor. The skorts MUST be between 3 and 5 inches from edge hem to floor when kneeling on floor. Childs's size #32008-65X4 Junior size #40371-55X6 Adult short skort (measures 16" in length from waist to hem) 32008-75X9 Adult Long skort (measures 20" in length from waist to hem) 32008-95XB BLOUSES **LABEL INSIDE OF WAISTBAND IN CENTER OF BACK Girls need two. They are a permanent press white camp-style shirt with short sleeves. They are available girl s, misses, and women s sizes. A snap must be sewn to the right shoulder seam under the collar to secure the badge sash. Note: If new blouses do not have a snap or button at the neck, you must sew a snap or button there to ensure that the collar and tie lie correctly. **LABEL INSIDE BACK OF COLLAR SO NAME CAN BE EASILY READ UNIFORM INFORMATION 2

TAB TIE Girls will need one. First year to troop = green, 2 nd year and up = red, and Senior Patrol Leaders wears gold. BADGE SASH **LABEL BOTH SIDES AT THE BACK - INSIDE THE ADJUSTMENT New Scouts should pick up their sashes and all patches needed for the sash EXCEPT for the troop crest (Pine Tree) which is supplied through the Uniform Supervisor. All other recognitions are the responsibility of the girl. She may remove badges, etc. from her Cadette or Senior sash or she may have her leader order duplicates from the Council office. A snap must be sewn onto the upper inside edge to hold the sash to the blouse. Please make sure to refer to the sash diagrams before you sew on all patches! KNEE SOCKS **LABEL ON THE INSDE SEAM ALLOWANCE AT BOTTOM OF SASH Girls will need two pairs. They are dark green cable socks, and only the ones we obtain are permitted. **LABEL ON FOOT PART (UNDER THE ARCH OR ON THE TOES, SO AS NOT TO SHOW WHEN IN UNIFORM) FLASHES Girls will need one pair. Cadettes and Seniors wear red and Senior Patrol Leaders wears gold. HATS **LABEL ON INSIDE OF THE FLASH AT THE TOP WHERE IT WILL NOT SHOW Girls will need two. They wear an adaptation of the old First Class Girl Scout hat. These hats are worn for ceremonial purposes and for flag duties only. Hats are made by the Uniform Supervisor and any volunteers. They are of dark green polyester and the girls will receive a small Scout Service Camp pin which is to be place on the right-hand front of the hat. Senior Patrol Leaders wear First Class hats with a Cockade. When worn, the hats must be secured with an inconspicuous hair pin so they won t blow off. These are troop property and must be returned upon leaving the island unless other arrangements are made with the uniform supervisor. **LABEL ON THE INSIDE BACK FACING WHERE IT WON T SHOW DO NOT USE IRON ON LABELS. THESE HATS ARE TROOP PROPERTY AND MUST BE RETURNED Second hat is a ball cap which is to be worn when standing at guide post. Scouts should be sure to label the back of the hat on the lining with a label so that they can easily identify their cap. This cap is a purchased portion of the girl s uniform and is supplied by the uniform supervisor. ** LABEL ON THE BACK OF THE HAT ON THE LINING UNIFORM INFORMATION 3

JACKET It is a dark green flannel-lined windbreaker with a Council patch sewn on the left sleeve three inches below the girl s shoulder. Jackets should be washed before wearing to remove the fuzzies from the lining. **LABEL ON INSIDE BACK OF THE COLLAR WHERE IT CAN BE EASILY READ SHOES Shoes may be of an oxford or slip-on style, low-cut only. They must be sturdy and in good condition, and made of smooth or brushed leather. Color must be dark or medium brown, not light brown or tan. If you are buying new shoes for the Island, be sure that they are properly broken in before departure. (Blisters hurt!) Remember to polish shoes before departure. Note: Tennis shoes are never permitted for duty or while in uniform when we get to the Island. After the first training, girls must wear the type of shoe that they will wear on the Island. It is very difficult to learn proper marching in tennis shoes. **LABEL SHOES ON THE INSIDE COLLAR WITH PAINT PEN AND ON INSOLES IF REMOVABLE RAIN PONCHO Girls will need one. It is made of a clear white heavy gauge vinyl with a hood attached. They are one size fits all and are ordered through the Uniform Supervisor. WRISTWATCH **LABEL AT BACK OF NECK ON OUTSIDE OF PONCHO WITH A PERMANENT MARKER Each girl must have a wristwatch. It may be of any plain style and should not be an expensive watch. Bright colors are not permitted, black, brown, silver or gold bands are only acceptable. ID TAGS **LABEL ON INSIDE OF BAND OR ON BACK OF WATCH CASE WITH TAPE Girls will receive a pair of ID tags (military dog tag style) which must be worn at all times while on the Island (including showers and bed!). They will have the girl s name, telephone number, and the telephone number of the barracks and will be ordered by the Uniform Supervisor. PATROL CORDS **NO LABELING IS NECESSARY Girls in leadership will receive patrol cords to use while serving with the unit. Cords are pinned on the left shoulder and hang under the arm. PALs wear one gold cord. APLs wear two gold cords. PLs wear one gold and one red cord. SPLs wear one gold and one blue cord. **LABEL UNDER SHOULDER PIN UNIFORM INFORMATION 4

OFFICIAL MIHS INSIGNIA SASH DIRECTIONS FOR SASH ASSEMBLY All badges and cloth insignia must be sewn on securely by hand or machine with matching thread. Do not attempt to use a bonding agent or fabric glue - experience has shown that these do not hold. 1. Sew on all Insignia per diagram below, placing it so that it will line up with the shoulder seam of the blouse. 2. Leave ¼ between each recognition as shown on next page. 3. The official troop crest of MIHS is the Pine Tree. This is provided with their uniform pieces through the uniform supervisor. 4. The World Trefoil Pin and the Girl Scout TRADITIONAL Membership Pin are to be worn on the opposite side of the Troop Numbers (1,4, 7) are placed. 5. The official troop numerals of MIHS are 147. Each girl must wear these numerals only. 6. Make sure not to sew patches on too close to the bottom of the sash as the tie ends are being removed and a solid seam will be sewn in by the Uniform Supervisor. 7. Sew name tag on the inside lower seam where it won t show after Uniform Supervisor has completed the alteration of the sash. 8. Attach a snap to the top inside of the sash where it will come under your blouse collar. Sew matching snaps on your blouses to hold the sash just under your collar edge. Please make sure that you use a heavy duty snap (most of our girls are high achievers and have many medals). 9. You should be finished and ready to sew on your insignia. Make sure that the top GSUSA Insignia on your sash will lie right at the shoulder seam of the blouse. 10. The only non-official insignia allowed on the back of the sash is a Mackinac Island Scout Service Camp patch received from serving a previous year. This patch is sewn at the very top of the sash, if worn. Camp patches, council patches, cookie patches, etc. are not permitted. 11. Service Training Bars, Leadership Awards, Challenge Pins, etc. If a girl does not have any of these yet, leave a small space for future awards. Pins received from National Headquarters, Juliette Gordon Low s Birthplace, Macy, etc. are permitted in this space as well. UNIFORM INFORMATION 5
