In this issue, we pay homage to trends that celebrate a brave, new Africanness that has an unapologetically striking aesthetic. Check out our feature on the way braids an almost ubiquitous symbol of African pride are being celebrated in art, bringing an unusual and compelling charm to new areas of design. We love the idea of transference, from fashion trends to other areas of our lives, such as decor fabrics and colours. Cross-pollination of this sort is what incubates creativity and ensures a dynamic conceptual conversation. We also feature a thought-provoking article by Mandla Sibeko, director of the FNB JoburgArtFair, on creating platforms for emerging artists. In an inspirational piece about Victor Dlamini, the portrait photographer explains his approach to capturing images of fellow Africans politicians, writers, musicians and leading social figures. In addition, there is a marvellous mini gallery of some of his most memorable work. Dlamini s technical expertise and profound knowledge of what should or should not be prominent in the depiction of each of his subjects are skills that have elevated him to the same illustrious status as photographers like Peter Magubane, David Goldblatt and Alf Kumalo. September is a month for revelling in all that is African, exploring new angles and alleyways of African identity and giving thanks that, for all its challenges, tensions and turmoil, there really is no place like home. ED-IN-CHIEF S NOTE Heritage I recently read a Daily Maverick story penned by writer, producer and musician Chris du Plessis. The piece, titled Inside the Knysna inferno: Smoke on the Water What to save when you are about to lose it all, delivers an achingly powerful image of Du Plessis wandering through the burning Western Cape town before returning to the smouldering ashes of his own home. As he closes the door of his house for the final time before surrendering it to the marching flames, he is overwhelmed by a state of hysterical calm. He describes the silent hum of his inner interrogation. What to save when you are about to lose it all? he asks himself again and again. Then, in a moment of clarity he suddenly knows exactly what to do : he grabs a white clay lamp that his mom bought in New York in the late 1950s, scoops up eight beers standing on the kitchen counter and runs to the car Why that lamp when there are so many other things he could have taken? He ponders the strangeness of his choice, although there is no doubt that, if pressed, most of us would also grab whatever first comes to hand, be it a lamp or a clutch of beers. For Du Plessis, his choice is informed by the power of memory and how it fills and defines our headspace, as much as our homes. Whether we hoard and pack our spaces with physical reminders of our travels, families, traditions and cultures, or strip our houses completely, our homes often express our true personalities, our journeys and our most defining experiences. A few months ago, I was on location for a photoshoot in Johannesburg where there was a dilapidated train station, an abandoned hotel and a deserted gentlemen s club. Regardless of the passing of time, each structure still held memories of the past: here, the whisper of nights that spilled into mornings; there, a faded souvenir from the Art Deco movement; everywhere, traces of people s passages and fragments of what they d left behind. What we surround ourselves with often has very little to do with the future, but more with who we were in the past and who we are right now. Our heritage the traditions or possessions that we pass from one generation to another and which cram or sculpt our spaces is what shapes our understanding of the world. It is what makes us us unique and remarkable; it is what gives us a feeling of belonging somewhere. Our heritage allows us to constantly rediscover ourselves and it offers us a way to anchor our souls. It is only logical, then, that we celebrate our heritage; that we honour the material things (works of art, books, carvings) and intangible things (memories) that make their way into our homes and help to create sanctuaries where we can find ourselves. @emiliegambade @EmilieGambade It is what makes us us unique and remarkable; it is what sparks a feeling of belonging.
