the epidermis Epidermis: 0.1 0.2 mm thick Stratum Corneum: 0.01 0.02 mm thick SC: Stratum Corneum G: Stratum Granulosum S: Stratum Spinosum B: Basal Layer
what prevents effective penetration? Excessive keratinization Cell walls Oily residue on the skin
Methods to enhance penetration: 1. Low Frequency Sonophoresis Makes cell walls more permeable 2. Pulsed Iontophoresis Makes cell wall more permeable Ionization of active ingredients 3. Cosmetic Needling Creates microscopically small channels through stratum corneum
comparison of product penetration potential Topical Occlusion Ultrasound Galvanic Pulsed Iontophoresis Low Frequency Sonophoresis Cosmetic Roll-CIT 0.1 4% product penetration depending on formulation etc. Occlusion for 20 minutes = Ultrasound 1.2 times better penetration Frequency: 1-3 MHz 2.5 to 3 times better penetration 4 times better penetration 40 times better penetration Frequency: 22 KHz Up to 100 times better penetration
