COLOUR INFLUENCES autumn/winter 2016
WELCOME TO CROWN PAINTS COLOUR INFLUENCES autumn/winter 2016 At Crown Paints we pride ourselves on encouraging people to express themselves through colour. And with more than 200 years of heritage, a wealth of knowledge and experience is poured into every tin. Our brands are widely used in both domestic and commercial environments, with premium quality products, ideal for every decorating situation. Every year, Crown Paints invites its panel of designers, colourists and trend forecasters to identify the influences that will define the colour landscape for the year ahead. The group discusses global events, social and economic changes as well as fashion and interior design trends to identify patterns for future influences and ultimately learn what will drive our customers tastes and behaviour in the year ahead. Autumn/winter 2016 consists of three individual palettes as a collection. The look is pared down with simple styling, a focus on colour, application and texture. Less is more and interestingly, all of the influences are heavily inspired either by our natural or our urban landscape. The colours shown are available in a wide range of high quality professional finishes, including Crown Trade s super scrubbable Clean Extreme emulsions, perfect for maintaining that just painted look. OUT OF THE DARK Out of the Dark plays around with the unexpected use of colour. Black & charcoal grey are dominant in this look, forming solid blocks of tone that are interrupted by strong blasts of bright yellow, pink and orange. Dramatic and daring, with its graphic lines and splashes of bright vivid colour, this striking influence would suit both a commercial and a domestic setting. Shades of grey and black are dominant in this look which typically, aren t signed for the faint hearted but they can make any setting feel more enclosed and inviting. OUT OF THE DARK JEMMA: JEMMA SAUNDERS comments; Out of the Dark reflects an emerging resolve to be bolder and braver with colour. What makes this trend so appealing is that you can be as adventurous as you like with the palette. Use colour in a restrained way by adding subtle colour explosions, or experiment with multiple patterns and silhouettes to really make the look your own. Mount Fuji / M7701A Pier View / N7171R Blue Gravel / P7320Q SKYSCAPES Inspired by a natural landscape, this influence uses layers of tonal colour to create an ethereal, magical look. Visual illusions of iridescent scenes from nature have created a palette which offers a fresh take on how we use cool colours in decoration. Dazzling reflections from minerals, seascapes and ice have inspired a colour collection that teams layers of pale, watery hues of cool blue with darker, chalkier, cloudier shades. The result is a tranquil, calm and reflective palette. COLOUR INFLUENCES autumn/winter 2016 8
SKYSCAPES JUDY: JUDY SMITH comments; Skyscapes is a quiet but assured colour trend that demonstrates how light and inky blues can be used together to create a pared-back tonal finish. Add subtle touches of shadow and cloudiness to the all-blue palette by using a feathered paint effect to separate two tones, or by bringing in grey and white accents as a gentle contrast. FADED BERRIES Faded Berries sees nature take on a robust and moody persona. This atmospheric influence captures the intensity of nature as it matures and evolves, evoking a landscape characterised by wild heather and untamed foliage. By setting the richness of deep heather tones against mossy and grassy greens, the palette takes on a decidedly untamed aesthetic, celebrating a nature that is faded and wild rather than restrained and pristine. The berry and green tones are complemented by neutral accents which bring a softness to the overall look. FADED BERRIES NEVILLE: NEVILLE KNOTT comments; There is something so inherently beautiful about nature gone wild. Faded Berries captures the splendour of the natural landscape as it is left to unfold and age. The mystical quality of the trend is enhanced by the way diffusions of colour are used to create purple-onpurple or green-on-green effects. The look is further accentuated by rustic wood furniture pieces, tactile textiles and the use of natural wood grains. How do you make your mark with paint: I like to create large watermark graphics or stripes using two colours very near each other in tone. Paint the wall with one of the colours then when dry, mask off the area you want to create the stripe or graphic in and paint on top. When dry peel off masking tape for a fabulous subtle feature. Judy is an interiors expert; having worked as a homes journalist, stylist and Art Director. She now concentrates on colour and trend forecasting for clients in the UK and Europe, enjoying a long relationship with Crown Paints as our Colour Consultant. How do you make your mark with paint: I like carrying the wall colour on to skirtings, window frames and cupboard fronts - it gives a great unbroken look and harmonious feel to a room. Justyna works in the Crown Creative Design Studio. She is involved in various design projects including packaging and literature design, as well as bringing her photography skills to the creative team. How do you make your mark with paint: I love to use flashes of strong, vivid colour in a broadly neutral colour scheme. I have a small wall in my study painted in intense green which creates a fantastic backdrop for my creative work. Lisa has many years of experience working in the Crown Creative Design Studio. Her work involves brochure and packaging design alongside colour trends and colour scheming. How do you make your mark with paint: I like to upcycle pieces of furniture with modern paint effects & colours. My favourite piece is an old school desk half painted in Mustard Jar. Jemma studied Contemporary Art Practice at Leeds University and now works in the Colour Service for Crown Trade. She has been involved in projects for education, healthcare, housing and commercial property. How do you make your mark with paint: I love having the chance to quickly change my son's bedroom. By painting one small wall, I can transform his room to style with his favourite theme at the time.
