Through paintings, sculpture and photography we look at the diverse range of artistic styles that artists have taken in their continuing challenge to depict the human form. Works include Stewart Carmichael s affectionate portrayal of his wife and Wolfgang Tillmans sophisticated selfie - wolfsnap. Each workshop will explore the theme of identity and you ll have an opportunity to learn new techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking and jewellery making. Year of Young People 2018 aims to inspire Scotland through its young people, celebrating their achievements, valuing their contribution to communities and creating new opportunities for them to shine locally, nationally and globally. With a different theme each month, these interactive workshops feature song, dress-up, dance and play and are led by professional dancers and award-winning choreographer, Thomas Small. These fun, interactive sessions are designed especially for families to explore and create together, through gallery tours and hands-on activities. Suitable for children under 12 yrs and their families. This summer, Maggie s Penguin Parade will hit the streets of Dundee with a trail of individually designed and beautifully decorated giant penguin sculptures. In September these unique sculptures will all find new homes when they are auctioned off to raise vital funds for the Dundee Maggie s Centre. During April, visitors can watch the transformation of one of the sculptures as it is decorated live in the Museum s Learning Studio a fantastic chance to see an artist s work in progress and catch an early glimpse of one of the 80 penguin designs! DUNDEE DOORS OPEN WEEKEND THE MCMANUS: DUNDEE S ART GALLERY & Sat 15 Sept, 10.30am 12.30pm Some 10% of the City s art collection is on display within The McManus - the rest is in store. To find out what kind of artworks are there, take this rare opportunity to drop in, meet the art curators and see the store in action. We encourage visitors to drop in throughout the morning. Note that numbers within the store will be limited to a maximum of 20 at any one time. Access will be on a first come, first served basis. MCMANUS COLLECTIONS UNIT Sat 15 Sept, 1-3pm A chance to take a peek inside McManus Collections Unit, home to Dundee s fascinating History, Archaeology, Natural and Social History collections. Meet the curators in the building s splendid rotunda and learn about toys and games across the generations. BROUGHTY CASTLE Sun 16 Sept, 1-3pm A rare chance to explore the underground ammunition magazine at Broughty Castle. Shells and cartridges were once stored here to feed the 4.7-inch Quick Fire Coastal Defence guns on the ramparts above. Visitors are advised that due to the historic nature of the building there is no disabled access to the Castle or the artillery magazine. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

THE MCMANUS: DUNDEE S ART GALLERY & SPRING WILDLIFE OF SCOTLAND Thur 5 Apr, 1-1.30pm Spring is the time when the sunshine returns after the cold winter and is when migratory birds travel to Scotland to breed. Many of the other animals wake up from hibernation and the trees regrow their leaves. This informative talk will highlight some of the different species of wildlife that can be seen in Spring. FACE TO FACE Thur 3 May, 1-1.30pm Joe McKenzie, Cuffed? Dundee 1973 The Joseph McKenzie Archive Portraits can tell us a lot about the people they portray. In this talk we look for clues as to the identity of the sitter and just what makes a successful portrait. THERE IS DEATH IN THIS BUSINESS OF WHALING Thur 7 June, 1-1.30pm For 130 years, the people of Dundee depended on the opportunities and resources provided by the whaling industry. Now, over 100 years since the last whaling ship left port, the relics of this brutal and complicated trade form a central part of the McManus collections. Come along to learn more about this shadowy chapter of our history. WHAT S IN STORE Thur 5 July, 1-1.30pm Watercolours and prints spend most of the time in store for their long-term preservation. Come behind the scenes and discover how we store and care for our superb collection of artworks on paper. REVEALING CHARACTERS Thur 6 Sept, 1-1.30pm Join us for a colourful introduction to some of the remarkable individuals who have been captured for posterity in the City s fine art collection. MCMANUS CAFÉ The McManus Café is the perfect location this summer to join friends for lunch or have a catch-up over coffee. Take a break between visiting the Museum s galleries to sample freshly-prepared sandwiches, soups and salads or enjoy a delicious afternoon tea. Join us for a look through the Museum s Social History Collections as we celebrate and share the story of Timex and its workers. A rare opportunity to see images of the collection and see what happens behind scenes. Join our informal guided tours that explore this remarkable historic building and its museum collection displays. Talks last approx. 30 mins. WILDLIFE WATCH! The Castle Observation Deck has magnificent views across the Firth of Tay to Tayport and Fife, and to the mouth of the Tay from Barry Buddon to Tentsmuir Point. On a clear day the Bell Rock Lighthouse can be seen in the distance. With birds, seals and dolphins living in the Tay, the Observation Deck is a perfect vantage point to try your hand at some wildlife spotting! To help, we have a range of binoculars that can be borrowed, that suit both children and adults. Please ask staff for details. SHOP AT BROUGHTY CASTLE GALA AT THE CASTLE! Sat 7 July, 11am-3pm Celebrate Broughty Ferry Gala Week at a special Family Event at the Castle. The Creative Learning Team will be helping visitors to get crafty and create beachthemed mobiles, and one of our Natural History Curators will be showing museum specimens and talking about the interesting wildlife that can be found living in and around Broughty Ferry and along the Firth of Tay. Drop into the newly-refurbished Broughty Castle Shop this summer! Whether it s a reminder of your visit, a unique gift for a loved one or simply getting supplies for sandcastle building on the beach we are sure to have something for you! Browse our fantastic range of nautical, military and history-themed products. Our section for little ones has everything from pirate treasure to a pair of junior binoculars to help them spot the dolphins in The Tay.
