Welcome to the Twin Cities Squadron The Naval Sea Cadet Corps imposes grooming standards for cadets and officers. The manner in which a cadet wears the uniform as well as by their personal appearance contributes to building pride and esprit essential to the Cadet Corps. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps has the honor and distinction of wearing the uniforms of the United States Navy. This uniform carries with it a long history and a sense of tradition. U.S. Naval Sea Cadets, officers, instructors, and midshipmen are authorized to wear Navy uniforms appropriately modified by USNSCC insignia, so as to clearly identify the wearer as a member of USNSCC. Good grooming and personal appearance instills pride and self-confidence in a cadet. All cadets are expected to be clean and be well groomed at all times. Uniforms are expected to be clean and pressed with all patches and name tapes securely attached in the proper position. Your cadet will be taught grooming customs and traditions early. You can help by being aware of the grooming standards. The Squadron will issue Navy uniforms to cadets that may be exchanged throughout the cadet s participation. Once a cadet leaves the program, all issued uniforms must be returned. Not all required items may be issued; items such as black socks, white/blue t- shirts, and other miscellaneous items may be required at the cadet s expense. It is the responsibility of each cadet to request from the Supply Officer any items that they are missing. Parents are responsible for all alterations. Do not cut uniforms when alterations are made. The uniforms are outlined in this manual. Additional information may be found at USNSCC Uniform Manual. U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps Twin Cities Squadron Copyright USNSCC TCS 2017 3 of 21

Uniforms Dress uniforms are summer whites (white jumpers) and dress blues. Summer whites are worn from May through September. Before May drill, cadets need to check their dress white uniform for fit and inside-out ironing. If needed, move rating badges from blues to whites. Cleaning Your Uniforms NWU s can be washed and dried at home. Do not use starch or bleach; it will degrade the stain resistant fabric. Dress Whites should be washed inside out in a normal washing machine. Fels-Naptha laundry bar and stain remover is excellent in removing stains on uniforms and covers. DO NOT let the dry cleaners press your uniform. Follow the instructions provided in this manual for creasing and ironing your uniforms. Dress Blues MUST be professionally dry-cleaned. Never wash your dress blues in a washing machine. DO NOT let the dry cleaners press your uniform. Follow the instructions provided in this manual for creasing and ironing your uniforms. Uniform Creases and Ironing When the dress uniforms are pressed, make sure the uniform is INSIDE OUT so that the creases are inverted when you put it on. The jumper and trousers are NEVER creased from the outside. ALWAYS turn the jumper and trousers wrong-side out as shown below. When ironing dress whites use a damp cloth between the hot iron and the fabric as the synthetic fabric will melt or discolor if the iron is too hot. The damp cloth also helps set a sharp crease. When ironing is completed and you turn the uniform right-side out you will see that all creases EXCEPT the front middle crease and the three creases o the collar flap are turned inward, not outward. Copyright USNSCC TCS 2017 15 of 21

How To Roll Your NWU Sleeves The sleeves of the NWU s may be rolled up during times of warm weather. For the NWU, the sleeves will be rolled inside out, with the cuff folded over, forming a roll approximately 3 wide and ending at a point approximately 2 above the elbow. 1. Lay the uniform on a flat surface, face up and sleeves extended out, with the button at the end of the sleeve unbuttoned. 2. Flip the sleeves inside-out by folding the cuffs of the sleeve up towards the armpit area. Pull it up until it almost touches the inside seam of the armpit region. 3. Roll the bottoms of the inside-out sleeves in 3 rolls upwards until you reach the cuffs. 4. Fold the end of the cuff down over the rolled portion of the sleeve. 5. Secure the button and flap. Repeat on opposite sleeve. An official PDF version of the instructions can be found on Homeport. A video with instructions can be found on the TCS website. Copyright USNSCC TCS 2017 16 of 21

How To Shine Your Boots and Dress Shoes What You Need: Shoe Polish (for best results, us Kiwi Parade Gloss) Cloth (t-shirts or cloth diaper work well) Water How To Shine Your Shoes: Spread a medium-thick layer of paste polish over the portion of the boot to be spit shined. Allow it to dry for 5 to 10 minutes. Wrap a soft, clean cloth around your index finger so that it is smooth with no wrinkles. Alternately, you can use a cotton ball. Dip your finder or the cotton ball into a container of water. The cloth/cotton should be wet but not dripping. Buff the dried polish using a circular motion until the wax starts to become shiny. Still using the damp cloth on your finger, apply a fine layer of polish in a circular motion and keep on rubbing lightly until a hazy shine develops. Using the damp cloth keep applying THIN coats of wax, buffing them with a small circular motion. When the boot is highly glossed, use a clean dry short cloth or a shinning brush to give it a final buff. A video can be found here. Copyright USNSCC TCS 2017 19 of 21
