EDITOR S NOTES I have received numerous questions from subscribers via email, direct message or Facebook and I wanted to take the time to address some of them here. Hopefully this will help others who have similar questions. Some of the myths about curly hair are downright funny while others actually make you wonder if there is any truth to them. Here are the Top 3 Curly Hair Myths I have heard recently: MYTH 1 / MYTH 2 / Constant washing dries out curly hair. FACT. Washing 1-3 times a week is actually good for curly hair; but steer clear of harsh chemicals from certain shampoos (that is true for any type of hair)! In fact, you should wash regularly to keep your hair from becoming brittle and dry. Why? First, washing clears your scalp and hair of product residue that can stunt hair growth and cause hair damage. This is especially true if you use products that contain mineral oil, petroleum, or alcohol. Second, a clean scalp keeps your natural oils (or sebum) flowing; these oils work as natural hair moisturizers that prevent brittle and dry hair. Curly hair grows slower compared to straight or wavy hair. FACT. Race has nothing to do with how fast a person s hair grows. We can expect our hair to grow at ¼ to ½ inch per month but since curly hair does not grow straight down but in curls it may seem to grow slower than straight hair. MYTH 3 / Curly hair is harder to manage compared to relaxed hair. FACT. This feels especially true if you are transitioning from relaxed hair to natural because you ve gotten used to straight hair. Curly hair seems to require unique attention since it is prone to frizz and damage but think about it so does thin, straight, or colored hair! Managing curls is not hard; it is just different. Simply begin by practicing the basics of caring for naturally curly hair, and soon you will create your regimen and understand what works for you. So, Do you have your own list of curly hair myths to debunk? Don t keep them to yourself. Go right ahead and share it with us and the CurlKit Community. HC

GOING/NATURAL AT ANY AGE By Tyra Indigenous Curls Almost 3 years ago, Jen went natural, and it wasn t intentional. For years, Jen would sit at the edge of her bed, with grease, a wide tooth comb, magnetic rollers, and roll her relaxed, ginger colored hair in perfectly uniform sections, then place a silk scarf over her head. In the morning, she would unroll her hair, and shape her cropped cut. This nightly ritual, and her short crop style was her everyday staple. Today Jen is retired from the Real Estate industry, and lives a holistic life, using herbal remedies, along with an exercise regimen to stay fit, vibrant, and active. Her days are now spent doing community service, and thrifting, so Jen had little time to deal with the rigors of at home hair care. Jen began getting protective styles; a series of braided and weaved styles. She stopped getting relaxers, and started taking multi-vitamins for hair and nails. Making a few changes to your lifestyle can make a big difference. At 67 she began transitioning, trimming off a little bit of relaxed hair each time she changed protective styles. She was skeptical about how natural hair would look on her. But today she is 100% sold! After spending nearly 3 years in protective styles, and treating her hair in-between each style, Jen was finally able to take a good look at her hair for the first time last week! For maintenance Jen only co-washes, and uses aloe juice to moisturize her hair underneath her protective styles. She uses protein based deep conditioners in between styles. Jen avoids heat, and drinks a lot of water daily. As Jen s 70th Birthday approaches, she cannot believe how long, thick and healthy her hair has gotten. I am excited about this journey I stumbled upon, and I look forward to whatever it brings.
HOW TO KNOW WHEN IT S TIME TO TRIM YOUR NATURAL HAIR By Klassy Kinks www.klassykinks.com Hair scientists, stylists, and bloggers debate on how often one should trim their natural hair, but one thing is for certain: healthy ends are essential to having healthy hair! Regardless of how often you plan to trim your hair, there are a few signs that you should bring out the hair shears sooner rather than later coming from someone who s had to deviate from her trim schedule twice in the past six months! DETANGLING IS A NIGHTMARE If your hair is properly moisturized and your detangling session is abnormally inconvenient, you may need to snip a little to give your hair the boost that it needs with some fresh ends. YOUR TWIST OUT IS RAGGEDY Replace twist out with braid out or bantu knot out or wash and go whatever style is your standard goto will look a little off if your ends aren t in good shape. YOUR ENDS WON T CURL UP Most likely my dear, you have heat damage, and unfortunately, it s an irreversible condition. Sulk for all of five minutes but then get right to trimming (a half inch or inch at a time if need be)! PROTECTIVE STYLING LONG TERM If you re planning on putting your hair away in braids, twists, or weaves for a considerable amount of time say three months or more you should get a trim before you protective style.
