Members of SSS Young Farmers volunteered to model the range of T-shirts that feature Highland cows, rutting stags and lots of other colourful Scottish imagery with a hint of street art, just to steer clear of the dreaded twee factor! By Karen Carruth Photographs: Rob Haining DAVID DOW, the name behind Urban Pirate, started his design-led company just a couple of years ago. Specialising in traditional Scottish imagery with a contemporary twist. David spends time with his designs, letting them evolve, combining his love of graffiti and street art, with familiar Scottish images and the result, as you can see from the colourful range that he produces, are fun while making a proud statement about Scottish culture. He creates all the designs himself, sometimes working up a few hundred, to see which makes the cut and eventually enters the range. It isn t just t-shirts that Urban Pirate creates. There is a popular range of tote bags, and t-towels, which sport the same designs as the Ts. David says: It s not a t-shirt with a design on it, I think of it as artwork that uses a t-shirt as its canvas, and take a more illustrative approach when designing them. T-time Continued from page 17 The latest round of designs were launched in January this year, and David tries to create a new line of designs every six months or so, to keep the range fresh for returning customers. At the moment, there are around 15 different designs, available either online from the Urban Pirate website, or from the range of stockists that currently sell the clothing eg, National Trust shops stock the Scotland map T-shirt which David was delighted to be among those receiving a Scottish Trade Award in the Best Product Category. He attends as many of the Highland Games as he can throughout Scotland. This year Urban Pirate is looking to reach a wider audience attending agricultural shows and country fairs, eg, Stranraer and Galloway. Attending Highland games and gatherings and being enveloped in Scottish heritage is a great source of inspiration for his designs. The t-shirts are all 100% cotton and are responsibly sourced. They are all high quality heavy cotton, these things are built to last! The designs themselves are all screenprinted, the highest quality of print for garments, making sure that the colours remain vibrant. Quality is something that David want to be synonymous with his brand and it s important to him that everything is made on his home ground, locally here in Scotland where possible. The bags and tea towels are also all 100% cotton and will withstand anything you throw at them. You can keep up to date with all the latest news, competitions and offers via the website, facebook and twitter. Kyle Campbell, Dexter Logan and Kris Johnston model some of the men s range T-shirts, come in a ladies and gents range, with sizes ranging from small to XXL, which costs just 20. Kids range comes in ages 3 through to 12, and costs 14. See page 24 for a discount offer just for Country Lifestyle Continued on page 20 Let s hear it for the models! Who knew that our younger generation of farmers were also contenders for Britains Next Top Model! When we put out the call for some fresh faced farmers to model for us, first off the mark were six stunners from Stirling, Strathkelvin and Strathendrick Young Farmers Club, well known as SSS YFC. The club are always up for a new challenge and a few laughs along the way. Special thanks to Suzie Dunn for her organisation skills and Dexter Logan for allowing us to use his farm for the location and his Highland cattle, which were very well behaved on their modelling debut!
