We are running reports on the jewellery market about three times a year or more as this reflects the buoyancy of the market in the last few years. The demand for jewellery certainly reflects the precious metals market as to be expected, but it also reflects exceptionally low interests for savers investing in money and the switch many people make to the safer haven of good jewellery which includes precious metals as well as jewels. A year or two ago, as an example of rising prices I quoted the average one carat solitaire diamond ring as approaching 1,000 at auction with added premium. A few years before that, and there are plenty of historical results on our Premier Online Database to prove the point, 700-800 was typical. However the market has now moved on, and 1,200-1,500 is nearer the price range including premium. These are examples from 2012 of lower prices as indeed there are of much higher prices. However these relate to the quality of the rings and settings, and more importantly not only the carat weight of the diamond but also the cut, the clarity and the colours of the stone. For example the solitaire diamond ring at 2 may have a stone of about a carat, but this is emerald cut, supported by diamond shoulders and carries a British Gemmological Institute certificate which I am certain will show well above the average colour and clarity ratings and hence justify the buyer s price of nearly 4,500. Incidentally if the certificate includes an insurance valuation then it will be in the 10,000 range. We can compare the ring at 4 which sold on the same day at the same auction. Although the brilliant cut solitaire was of 1.5cts and also included pavé set baguette cut diamond shoulders it fetched a 1,000 less in an identical market situation and this will certainly be due to the fact that the diamond at 4 is inferior to the diamond at 2. Prospective buyers of such jewellery will have asked for condition reports on these two lots and would have been aware of the clarity and colour ratings of the principle stones. At 9 good pairs of diamond earrings are much more difficult to find than good quality diamond rings, and when they emerge in the secondhand market they are vigorously contested. Here, if these diamonds total 0.9cts, then they are about 0.45cts per diamond and will therefore have a diameter of about 5mm. Personally I think these are too small to have the serious display potential that would come with one carat stones, where the diameter is 6.5mm. I would prefer, if this were my price range to go for a daisy setting of smaller stones giving a display diameter of say 10mm. However the solitaire is king, and here a bidder was prepared to pay almost a 1,000 for earrings which could have been bought for 500-700 about two or three years ago. Even so, I should continue to labour the point that if the buyer were to go on the high street and buy new then the price at the very least will double and I usually work on a price ratio of 2:5 being auction to high street.
