Created in Conflict is a must-see show created in collaboration with the National Army Museum and Cardiff University, and which looks at art - from paintings and quilts to toys and game pieces - created by servicemen and women from the Crimean War to today. Thanks to generous grants from statutory and individual donors, we also relaunch our British Folk Art Collection, which has been completely redisplayed to offer new interpretations of these fascinating galleries. I would like to extend our thanks to our collaborators, artists Mark Hearld and designers Schimmer Child. 2018 is definitely the year to celebrate the renowned multidisciplinary artist, Enid Marx. Not only will Alan Powers fabulous new biography of the designer be launched at Compton Verney in the spring; we will also unveil new work by artists at Coventry University in response to the breadth and imagination of the Marx-Lambert collection. Our regular drop-in events, Tiny Tuesdays and our thriving Dementia Café will also return, alongside the ever-popular Forest School. Spring Exhibition Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship, English Artist Designers 1922-1942 Sat 17 March Sun 10 June Eric Ravilious (1903-42) is now recognised as one of the most important and popular British artists of the 20th century. This major new exhibition explores the influence of Ravilious and his circle, and their remarkable impact on British art and design in the 1930s and 1940s. Based on new research and telling a previously untold story, it chronicles the personal and professional relationships between Ravilious and artist-designers such as Paul Nash, John Nash, Enid Marx, Barnett Freedman, Eileen Garwood, Thomas Hennell, Douglas Percy Bliss, Peggy Angus, Helen Binyon, Diana Low, and one of his closest friends, Edward Bawden. Ravilious & Co brings together nearly 500 paintings, prints, drawings, engravings, books, ceramics, wallpapers, and textiles, many rarely shown and previously unknown. These fascinating works highlight key moments in the artists lives and work from first meetings at the Royal College of Art, to the evolution of their artistic practices into commercial and industrial design. The exhibition has been created to mark the 75th anniversary of Ravilious tragic and mysterious early death in Iceland during the Second World War, and it finishes on a remarkable series of works from his time as an official war artist. Spring Exhibition Created in Conflict: British Soldier Art from the Crimean War to Today Sat 17 March Sun 10 June An important glimpse into the humanity that lies beneath the horrors of war. The Brayley Quilt Victoria and Albert Museum, London A showcase of the incredible resourcefulness and diversity of artwork made by British Armed Forces personnel. With key loans from the V&A, the Imperial War Museum and the Museum of Military Medicine, the exhibition will feature a rich variety of resonant items including tankards made by soldiers in the trenches during World War I, game pieces carved by Prisoners of War during World War II, and toys and quilts made by convalescing soldiers. Addressing a broad time period, the exhibition will consider the enduring themes raised by war, including ways of keeping in touch with home, patriotism, loyalty and the treatment of veterans. Paintings, photographs and insightful collaborations between veterans and contemporary artists will demonstrate the power of artworks to make us feel both better and worse about war. British Folk Art Redisplay From Sat 17 March Compton Verney is excited to be redisplaying our popular British Folk Art Collection. We have worked with artist Mark Hearld, who as well as reimagining the existing collection has produced work in response to it, including a wallpaper entitled Compton Verney. Mark takes his inspiration from flora and fauna of the British countryside and works across a number of mediums, producing lithographic and linocut prints, paintings, collages and hand-painted ceramics. He has completed commissions for Faber & Faber and Tate Museums and has worked with Yorkshire Sculpture Park and most recently with York Museum & Art Gallery. The redisplayed collection features new interpretation and lighting, helping to make the collection more interesting and engaging for visitors. This opportunity to give the collection the recognition it deserves has only been made possible with external funding. Compton Verney are also extremely grateful for assistance for this project from a recent legacy. Opening Sat 17 Mar Enid Marx and the British Folk Art Collection A collaboration with Coventry University sees six artists creating work in response to Compton Verney s Marx-Lambert collection of popular art. Artists Jill Journeaux and Jonathan Waller are the first to present their responses. Come back throughout 2018 to see the rest. Portrait Miniatures Redisplay From Sat 17 Mar A collection of exquisite miniatures was generously loaned to Compton Verney in 2015. The selection chosen this year includes a group of uniformed figures to link with the Created in Conflict exhibition, which have never been exhibited before. Looking ahead to Summer 2018 The Marvellous Mechanical Museum Sat 30 June Sun 30 September Promising to be both fascinating and visually stunning, The Marvellous Mechanical Museum will bring a host of historic and contemporary mechanical marvels to Compton Verney. Beginning with the creations and mechanical exhibitions of the 18th century a period often regarded as a golden era of automata - the exhibition explores how such machines have long fascinated not only their own makers and wealthy patrons but the general public alike. The publication of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein in 1818, often referred to as the first work of Science Fiction ushered in a new era of interest in automata. The exhibition will explore the literary creations of other beings: mechanical, virtual or, in the case of Frankenstein s monster, those created through electrochemistry. The exhibition will also feature the whimsical creations of inventor Rowland Emett, set designer for the film, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and a host of contemporary automata makers and artists.
