> Training for a Better World Project-Room, Annie ABRAHAMS Is the artist, Annie Abrahams, in training for a better world, when she appears on the invitation for the exhibition, "Training for a Better World", spinning around in a desert landscape? Maybe. Yet, the pieces she has presented to the Regional Centre of Contemporary Art were all done in collaboration with others. The artist does not show us what this better world will be like, she even says that she has no idea, but she insinuates that it will be built on multiple voices and the dissension between art and non-art, between politics and the a-political, between the common and the singular, and between the everyday and the exceptional. Annie Abrahams intentionally paraphrases Jacques Rancière when she says that "reality must be captured to make it accessible to thought". She reveals this often dirty, boring, banal, sometimes vulgar, and always fractured and multiple reality in her pieces of performance, video and "shared writing" on the Internet. And to do this, she has chosen to work around universal concepts: fear, anger, loneliness, madness, love, etc. (1) (1). The artist talks about it in an interview with Fadat Manuel, the author of Conversations with Claire Fontaine, Stephen Wright, Paul Ardenne and Alain Badiou, published in 2010 by Éditions Appendices. Fadat raises "the question of political and social dimensions in contemporary art." The interview is published by the artist and is included in the exhibition.
Training for a Better World I am not a performer, I use performing for research. I am not a researcher. I use research in my performing pieces. I am a performer who uses research as a medium. I am a performer looking for encounters. Annie Abrahams's project addresses the issues of network communication and collaboration through the Altermodern notion. "While the world around us is capitalised and becomes more and more hierarchical, we dream of a horizontal world, a world where we are all equal. The post-, alter-, neo- modern individual, who has a dangerous tendency suffice in a world where they communicate with each other through their own projection, is central to the project." Annie Abrahams "I have always wondered about identity. I have always tried to find my place in a world that I don't understand. I have always tried to understand the Other. It s the basic condition of my existence. How can you avoid working on the network? Nowhere else can I be closer to this Other, nowhere else can I observe it so closely." Annie Abrahams, CIAC no 34. 2009. "Coming out of the bubble" Editorial interview with Albertine Meunier by Cyril. PERFORMANCE TO SEE AT THE ART CENTRE Friday 2nd December 2011, at 7pm. General audience. Annie ABRAHAMS- Performance of Huis Clos / No Exit - Training for a Better World As part of the exhibition, the artist will present a performance on the 2nd December of Huis Clos / No Exit - Training for a Better World, in which six artists, through computers and webcams, all in isolated places, dispersed in space, will share a space of expression and responsibility, a playground, a laboratory: the projection of their images and sound in a single video projection to the public. By executing a protocol performance written by the artist, they create live, in front of the public s eyes, a contemporary account of the problems of remote communication and dynamics in a dispersed group, on the possible "being together" in a connected world. légendes photos-de gauche à droite : >Performance Huis Clos / No Exit On Translation, NIMk Amsterdam, 2010.
