Welcome to Autumn at Z-arts This Autumn is a chance to enjoy fantastical storytelling with the world premiere of Snow Queen from the 3rd -13th December, written by Philip Osment and produced by Z-arts, a notable alternative to the traditional Christmas pantomimes. But if your Christmas calendar isn t yet on your agenda, then there s lots to do all day everyday. In October half term we present a unique partnership with Capoeira Manchester exploring Afro Brazilian culture including a live link up with workshop participants in Rio. From drama workshops to dance, film and our year-round programme of family entertainment (which this autumn includes the first specially made show for children from the inspiring and endlessly entertaining Forced Entertainment, programmed as part of the Family Arts Festival) it s an action packed season for children and families. Katie wishes she could feel less grey and lonely. A beautiful picture on the wall catches her eye and, in an explosion of colour, another world comes to life. The show lasts 40 minutes and offers the chance to meet the puppets afterwards. Magical and beautiful - The Guardian Saturday 17 October Tree/ Boom/ Umthi Presented by Magnet Theatre 11am & 2.30pm, 6/8, 3-7 Running Time: 45 mins the way from South Africa, Tree/ Boom/ Umthi tells the story of a hungry man who wants to eat a peach. The 30-minute narrative starts when a hungry child, who wishes to eat a peach, plants a seed in the ground. As the tree grows, the company of four actors lets us in on secrets about day and night, the seasons and the animals that interact with trees in the natural world. Tree/ Boom/ Umthi is like an illustrated children s book, brought to life and filled with beautiful images and song by the awardwinning Magnet Theatre who have performed all over South Africa and internationally. She ll take you on a nighttime adventure around labyrinthine corridors, a deserted ballroom and a cupboard under the stairs, encountering a motley crew of characters. There s a friendly philosophical spider, a talking mouse, a notso-very-frightening ghost and an army of dancing soldiers inside this most unusual house. Family Fun Days Saturday 12 September International Roald Dahl Fun Day 11am 3pm, Free September is Roald Dahl s birth month and this year Z-arts will be celebrating with a wonderful array of creative activities based on his books. Join us for a fun-filled day on the 12th September for the whole family to enjoy; dress as your favourite characters, share stories from Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts and make characters from your favourite stories. Saturday 28 November Snow Queen Fun Day 11am 3pm, Free Z-arts will be transforming our gallery into an ice palace for a family fun day including a chance to meet the Snow Queen! There will be face-painting, storytelling from members of our cast of the Snow Queen, fun ice-inspired activities, a fancy dress competition and plenty of snow themed snacks in our cafe! The Snow Queen will award the child (or parent) in the best costume a super special prize. Judging will be at 2pm, so polish those snowflakes and dust off your crowns. 7

There will be creative arts inspired by Hans Christian Anderson who wrote the books The Little Mermaid and our upcoming Christmas Show, Snow Queen. Monday 9-14 November Journeys and Journals 1pm - 5pm, Free exhibition Freedom from Torture and Nelly Globe Arts worked on a journaling project with torture survivors from across the world. The group went on a sensory journey through Manchester collecting thoughts, feelings, smells, sounds, perspectives and touch. The exhibition is a result of this journey, where the participants have explored their sensory self in the present, as well as visually communicating the experiences of their past. Please note that younger children should be accompanied by an adult. Saturday 21st November Manchester Glee presents Northern Soul 7.30pm, 8 / 5 Running Time: 90 Minutes From Manchester s Oasis hot footing it to Newcastle s Billy Elliot via the Blood Brothers of Liverpool, Manchester glee will take you on a musical 15+ journey celebrating all things northern. 7-10 7-11 & their grownups Holiday Activities Monday 26 Friday 30 October Brazil to Manchester: A Journey through Capoeira 10am 12pm, Free During October half term young people will be invited to take part in a series of cultural workshops based on the Afro Brazilian (Martial) Art of Capoeira. Using the different elements of Capoeira the participants will learn to play Capoeira, developing the skills to perform this visually distinct art form. They will make African instruments and learn how to play them, sing in Portuguese and create art work to celebrate the vibrant culture and heritage of Brazil. In partnership with Capoeira Manchester we will link with children from Rio and share their experiences of the week. Get Involved Volunteers There are plenty of opportunities for volunteers at Z-arts from lending a hand with our creative classes, stewarding our events or helping out in our cafe-bar. We re also looking for volunteer families to help us shape our family programme.
