Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques This unit is about cutting beards and moustaches to maintain existing shapes using scissors over comb, clippers with attachment, clippers over comb and freehand cutting techniques. Part of this service is to provide your client with good aftercare advice. _v6

Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Be able to maintain effective and safe methods of working when cutting facial hair 2. Be able to cut beards and moustaches to maintain their shape 3. Be able to provide aftercare advice 4. Understand salon and legal requirements 5. Understand how to work safely, effectively and hygienically when cutting facial hair 6. Understand how to use tools and equipment 7. Understand cutting techniques for facial hair 8. Understand aftercare advice for clients Evidence requirements 1. Simulation is not allowed for any performance evidence within this unit. 2. You must practically demonstrate in your everyday work that you have met the standard for cutting facial hair. 3. Your assessor will observe these aspects of your performance on at least 4 occasions. These observations must cover: 1 tapered beardline 1 outlined beard 2 different moustache shapes. 4. From the range, you must show that you have: used all the types of tools taken account of all the factors cut all the looks used all the cutting techniques given all the advice. 5. It is likely most evidence of your performance will be gathered from the observations made by your assessor but you may be required to produce other evidence to support your performance if your assessor has not been present. 6. There is no external paper requirement for this unit. 3

Achieving observations and range Achieving observation outcomes Your assessor will observe your performance of practical tasks. The minimum number of observations required is indicated in the evidence requirements section of this unit. Maximum service times The following maximum service times apply to this unit: Tapered beardline 15 minutes Criteria may not always naturally occur during a practical observation. In such instances you will be asked questions to demonstrate your competence in this area. Your assessor will document the criteria that have been achieved through oral questioning. Your assessor will sign off an outcome when all criteria have been competently achieved in a single client service. Full beard outlines Moustache only 15 minutes 5 minutes Achieving range The range section indicates what must be covered. Ranges must be practically demonstrated as part of an observation. Your assessor will document the portfolio reference once a range has been competently achieved. 4

Observations Outcome 1 Be able to maintain effective and safe methods of working when cutting facial hair You can: a. Protect the client s clothing and eyes throughout the service b. Keep the client s face and neck free of excess hair cuttings throughout the service c. Position the client to meet the needs of the service without causing them discomfort d. Keep the work area clean and tidy throughout the service e. Remove waste immediately at the end of the cutting service f. Use safe working methods that: - make effective use of resources - minimise the risk of harm or injury to yourself and others g. Maintain personal standards of health and hygiene that minimise the risk of crossinfection, infestation and offence to clients and colleagues h. Use tools that are safe and fit for purpose i. Identify factors likely to influence the service prior to cutting j. Complete the cutting service within a commercially viable time *May be assessed through oral questioning. Confirm the agreed look with the client throughout the service c. Establish and follow the cutting guideline(s) to achieve the required look d. Adapt the cutting techniques to take account of factors influencing the service and to achieve the desired look e. Change own position and that of the client to help ensure the accuracy of the cut f. Check regularly the client s comfort throughout the service g. Finish the look so that it is even, symmetrical and balanced in relation to the client s facial contour h. Finish the look with an even density throughout the shape i. Remove any unwanted hair outside the desired outline shape * j. Make a final visual check to ensure the finished cut is accurate k. Confirm the client s satisfaction with the finished cut *May be assessed through oral questioning.
