SKS バインディング 2 SKS-BINDING SLEEVE SEAL RING SKS BINDING SHAFT SKS BINDING The SKS-BINDING is new type of corrosion preventive technique and it is applied to SHAFT KIND 1 propeller shafts in place of conventional Rubber Binding. The SKS-BINDING is special resin rework technique which is able to contribute to production cost reduction and reliability improvement. 7

This seal is designed to work automatically under an emergency case only. SKC 紹介 2.TYPE-SKC Simple design, easy installation and high performance. STERN KEEPER is the latest Stern-tube Sealing System of seawater lubrication type which is superseding conventional gland packing systems. STERN KEEPER is a successful fruit of our long years experience and advanced techniques which have resolved a number of problems and inconveniences with the mechanical seal type stern-tube sealing systems in the market today. New adaptation of Seal Ring that can be used its both ends and safety Contractible Seal for emergency replacement works etc are assuring easy handling reliable performance. With its advanced superior quality and simplified design STERN KEEPER offers safer, more practical and durable service in costsaving performance for modern marine application. 11

SKC 特長 1 2-2.Feature 1. EASY INSTALLATION Just mount all assembly parts passing through shaft and tighten screw bolts in order of that for Casing1, Band2 and Seal Ring 3.(Refer to the drawing in page 12) After piping, the installation sealing system is completed. 2. SPECIAL THRUST-LOAD HOLDING FACE ASSURES HIGHER PERFORMANCE The Rotating Seal Ring is made of the synthetic rubber developed specially for high sealing efficiency. Specially designed Thrust-load holding face placed on both end of Rotating Seal Ring keeps constant pressure on sealing face even if the shaft gives axial movement. 3. CONVENIENT SEAL RING AND SPARE ROTATING SEAL RING When the seal face is worn and water leakage increased, the function is renewed by using reverse face of the Seal Ring and replacing with the Rotating Seal Ring which mounted on the shaft as spare one. 13
SKC 特長 2 2-2.Feature 4. SPACE SAVING Designed compact and with minimized full length, the installation space is greatly saved. 5. CONTRACTIBLE SEAL WITH SAFETY PERFORMANCE Thick rubber Seal Ring is pressed to ward the shaft by air pressure and protect seawater invading in during the replacement works of Rotating Seal Ring. (Be sure not to have it contracted while the shaft is rotating.) 6. ELECTROLYTIC CORROSION PREVENTION To minimize electrolytic corrosion insulation bush and packing etc are used. 14
SKC 特長 3 2-2.Feature 7. NO WEAR ON SHAFT The shaft is never worn as there is no direct sliding portion in sealing unit against the shaft. 8. LOW MAINTENANCE COST In addition to less consumable assembly parts, the Seal Ring can be reused by re-grinding its worn surface. 9. INSTALLATION WITHOUT PULLING OUT SHAFT The Seal Ring and Rotating Seal Ring are available to be installed without pulling out the shaft. 15

SKC チェックアイテム 1 2-6.Check Item Check during assembling Confirm that there is no damage or dent on the sleeve surface and the end face of stern tube boss. Anti-corrosing paint is coated smoothly on the designated area of sleeve. Liquid packing is coated on the end face of stern tube boss. The seal system is set so that T mark comes to upright position. Confirm that there is no mistake in direction of assembly parts. Sealing face and surface of sleeve are thinly coated with oil or grease. 21
SKC チェックアイテム 2 2-6.Check Item Take care that no dirt or foreign matters enter into sealing system during assemble work. Confirm that there is no damage on sealing face and no step on spitted part of seal face. Confirm that there is no mistake on piping work. Confirm copper pipe is put through insulation bush and the then fixed on the hull. Hose made of rubber is used for water piping. 22
SKC チェックアイテム 3 2-6.Check Item Check before operation Confirm that Contractible Seal is worked by compressed air. Confirm that the valve Aa1 is opened so that Contractible Seal is not activated. Confirm that there is no abnormal leakage. Confirm that cooling water is supplied into bearing and Seal Unit. Confirm that standing air in Seal Unit is let out from Plug. 23
SKC メンテナンス 1 2-7.Maintenance Check Frequency Once a day Check Item Confirmation of water flow of cooling water along bearing. Confirmation of leakage volume. Confirmation of Seal Ring temperature. Countermeasure Confirm pressure on gauge of pipe. Optimum volume is 0~50l/day. If it exceeds this, take measure mentioned in in 4-5. FAILURE AND COUNTERMEASURE. Less than 50 is normal condition. When heat is raised up to the temperate nobody touches by hand, take measure mentioned in 4-5. FAILURE AND COUNTERMEASURE. 24

Pressure gauge of VALVE UNIT SEAL RING ROTATING SEAL RING CONTRACTIBLE SEAL Countermeasure When scale of t part is less than 1mm(new one 10mm) replace with new one. If there are failure or damage, replace with new one. If there is leakage over 100l/day, re- grind it. If there is leakage over 100l/day, replace with new one. If pressure goes down abnormally, repeat to operate and turn off 4 or 5 times. 25

Replace with new one. Replace with new one. If pressure goes down widely repeat to operate and turn off 4 or 5 times. If pressure fall doesn t recover, disassemble and clean it. Clean up the vacuum ejector. 26

SKC メンテナンス 5 2-7.Maintenance Check Frequency Check Item Countermeasure If SLEEVE is re-grinded, you must take mentioned below. In case of inspection pulling out the shaft. (After five years.) SEAL RING ROTATING SEAL RING BAND Replace with new one. (new size) Replace with new one. (new size) Replace with new one. (new size) In case of dismantling Seal Unit. O RING, PACKINGS & HOSE. If there are failure or damage, it must be again replaced. 28
SKC 故障発生時 1 2-8.Failure and Countermeasure FAILURE Leakage is too much. CAUSE Wear of Rotating Seal Ring. Wear of Seal Ring. Cram up of sludge in sealing faces. Step-down difference in split part of sealing face. CONTERMEASURE Optimum leakage volume is 0~50l/day. Even if leakage is more than 500l/day, instant adjustment is not necessary. Volume of leakage would periodically increase or decrease, so you must wait about 3 days and if leakage dose not become smaller, then you take under mentioned measures. 1)Polish the worn sealing face of Seal Ring with a sandpaper. 2)If volume of leakage dose not decrease after above mentioned adjustment, you must replace Rotating Seal Ring and use reverse face of Seal Ring. When re-grinding of sealing face of Seal Ring is done, you must replace the Rotating Seal Ring. 3)Make difference in level of split type portion smoothly by using sandpaper. 29
SKC 故障発生時 2 2-8.Failure and Countermeasure FAILURE Temperature of Seal Ring is too high. CAUSE Cooling water is not supplied to the bearing. CONTRACTIBLE SEAL is contracted. Air is standing in Seal Unit. A Fishing net is wound around on the shaft. Sealing faces are not bedded in. CONTERMEASURE Check water tubing circuit (conjunction & valves) to confirm right water supply. Check compression air supply tubing to let air out of CONTRACTIBLE SEAL and stop air. Let air out of Seal Unit from PLUG. Remove fishing net. Open the PLUG and decrease sea water temperature in Seal Unit. Wait well bedding in effect of sealing face.(20~30hr). Pouring on sealing parts with cool water from outside is fairly effective in cooling. 30
