Ahmed Ibrahim, 73, who has been a card-holding member of Prince Edward Library in Bhoola Centre for 60 years, said his passion for reading began during his childhood years when he used to rush off to library during his school lunch breaks. Tips to living coping with arthritis A friend of mine once said living with arthritis is like being with a lifetime partner you learn to accept ups downs, highs lows, because it will be part of your life forever. The most important things that we need to know underst n is how to control disease so that we can make our lives easier as comfortable as possible. As re are more than 150 different types of arthritis, it is understable that each case has to be carefully diagnosed treated that patient needs to have a reliable sympatic support system available to m every single day. My wife Lyn, at time a single parent lady 25 years old, was going through a traumatic stressful time in her life which resulted in her being diagnosed with heumatoid Arthritis. Some 35 years later Lyn has had to endure an elbow replacement, 4 foot surgeries surgery to her thumb. Lyn has been closely monitored by heumatologists goes for treatment at her local hospital. To me, having lived through year with Lyn, re are three important reasons why she is still very active mobile today; To be positive not let disease dominate her life. To exercise regularly without putting too much pressure on bones joints of body to pace herself. To maintain a healthy balanced diet (lots of vegetables white meat instead of red wherever possible to reduce acid levels in body). Obviously it is also vitality important to have expert medical help guidance re are a number of specialist heumatologists in country in private state hospitals private practices. As one heumatologist said to me or day, I do not have a me m relationship with my patients, y are part of my team toger with my assistants ir support groups we tackle ir problems toger. Each person s pain is distinct (I can t feel your pain you can t feel mine) refore drugs or medication administered react differently on different people. I may react positively to Methotrexate, but not Salazopyrin, or I might just be fine with an anti-inflammatory drug. The fact of matter is that you need to find medication that is right for you. It is important for patients to give ir doctors regular feedback as to how y are feeling, what side effects y may be experiencing any or useful information e.g. mobility, pain, etc. So that ir doctor can make an accurate treatment programme for patient or adjust an existing one. Some patients might benefit from making a few short notes beforeh so that y don t forget to mention important points. Our budget levels regarding medication also vary from patient to patient so it is important that your doctor knows what you can afford. Someone contacted me recently who has been on evellex (Biologics) for Ankylosing Spondylitis for past 10 years his treatment has cost him upward of 100 000 per annum. The medical aid that he belongs to has reduced his threshold level although treatment has been highly successful over years, he will most probably have to change his medication to suite his pocket. We at Foundation encourage people to become members so that you can keep up-to-date on new information relating to this common disease we also hold informative talks to community at large to private groups to discuss symptoms, prognosis, treatment support systems to make living with arthritis easier! THE ISING SUN, OVEPOT, JUNE 23, 2016 Page 17 CAXTON local media CBD ising Sun North Your weekly motoring guide with attitude 24 June 2016 Mahindra XUV500 2.2 DE W8 4x2 W By James Siddall hen Japanese cars first started hitting Western markets four or five decades ago, y were almost universally derided as sub-stard. Today, well, y are pretty much a byword for excellence, have been for some while. On a similar note, when Korean cars started filtering on to South African market late last century, y were vaguely acceptable at best. Today offerings from Kia Hyundai especially compete with best in ir class. That take us to next two emerging automotive giants, China India. Chinese cars have got a lot better in 10 or so years I've been driving m, GWM arguably provides best on our market, even if ir vehicles have lost ir price advantage. Then re are Indian cars. You want to watch se, especially those from Mahindra, which far from being some obscure, small-bit player is huge in its home country. In fact, it has been operating since 1945, today has grown into a $16.5-billion multinational. Now probably its best product available in South Africa is XUV500 (Mahindra has also just locally released a baby SUV-type machine called KUV100, we'll shortly tell you about that when we get one on test). It's a pretty hsome, striking machine, this XUV500, all more so since a facelift late last year. In fact, sitting on attractive 17-inch alloys, it conspires to look more expensive than it is - it's not very expensive. I have just spent a week or so with top-spec W8 version of this machine, although it was 4x2 version, with re also being an AWD version. Fit, finish, perceived quality is pretty good, while in W8 guise this sizeable seven-seater SUV is well-specced indeed. And you don't get impression that this is tinsel masking a sub-stard product. Stard nice-to-haves include lear interior, auto-sensing headlights windscreen wipers, climate control, cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, plus a refrigerated centre console, - hily for plugged-in generation - charging points in all three seating rows. There's also a crisp, seven-inch touch-screen infotainment system, Bluetooth, a good sound system, a reverse camera. Safety is taken care of by dual front, side, curtain airbags, side-impact protection bars, as well as ABS with EBD, an electronic stability control programme with roll-over mitigation. You also get Hill Hold Hill Descent Control. As for moving power, that's provided by a 2.2-litre, turbodiesel making 103kW at 3,750rpm, 330Nm between 1,600 2,800rpm, while gear changes are taken care of by a six-speed manual. It's just a little, but only a little, unrefined next to, say, a way more expensive Toyota Fortuner. But it does job n some, plus looks good, while as you read this orders are open for a promising six-speed automatic version. And at 354,995 - including a fiveyear/150,000km warranty, a fiveyear/100,000km service plan - this XUV500 is brilliant value. Mahindra is a company to watch indeed.
