Nevertheless, it is possible to design protective clothing which offers a certain degree of protection. Different functional principles may be applied in order to give this protection. 1. Clogging: if the moving chain comes into contact with the first of several protective layers below the outer material, it rips out bundles of fibres which block the sprocket, bringing the chain saw to a standstill. This considerably reduces the risk of injury. 2. Chain slipping: on contact with the protective material, it does not cut it. 3.
